The point is that hope itself entails ignoring reality.

...and it's his reliance on that hope that keeps him from simply putting his head down to eat the grass at his feet. You don't have to ignore reality to hope for something more. You cannot guarantee success in this life or the next, hope keeps you moving towards your goals.
