Got it on Blu Ray when it came out. I really liked the movie, the Blu Ray however is a bit underwhelming. There are a few previews that you have to skip through to get to the main menu, using the menu buttons on the remote to skip directly to it don't work. You also have to first select either a Prawn of MNU user interface before getting to the menu where you can start the movie. The movie was shot in a 1.85:1 aspect ratio, while its presented in 16:9 without an option for actual size. There was also no inclusion of the original short, Alive in Joburg.

I really liked this movie too. Really really liked it.

Yes, I thought it was excellent. Mainly because of the way the story was told. The story itself had plenty of holes, but for some reason this bothered me much less than usual. Again, I think it was a function of how the narrative pulled me in more than most movies.

stuff, but its already pointing towards movies and books. In fact the books already ended up all in one thread. Its going to suck when we end up with a movie thread, game thread, and book thread. Individual items in those threads should get their own thread. In their own section.

Its just that some subjects should be encouraged. Considering we're coming from a gaming forum, and are still light on members, an entertainment forum to match Atari's Gamer Retreat would make sense.
Just look at the book thread, full of people posting what they are reading. Very little actual book discussion, or even reasons why.

Kind of pointless in discussing a book unless more than one person has read it, though. I mean, I have little desire to read people's book reports. If I'm going to read something myself, I don't want it ruined by hearing the plot from someone else ahead of time.

This is the entertainment section, dumbass.

Wouldn't your example be an even stronger reason for individual threads in their own section? So you can read about one without catching spoilers to another case they are all in the same thread? :confused:

Have you noticed a great deal of carryover between what people are reading? No? Me either. So wouldn't be much of a discussion, would it? More like masturbation. Or a book report.

I think we could easily get good threads out of the Zombie adaptations, or even World War Z. A thread after all usually requires more than one person, hence the discussion.

What you've read doesn't matter a lick. But I know more than one person here have read those books. Except in threads like we have them, discussion doesn't last more than a few posts cause it gets lost amongst crap during a lull.

I think it was mainly because the plot didn't rely on the plot holes being accurate or realistic, just that the information was there. Of course its going to take longer than 3 years for Christopher to get to Andromeda, but that doesn't matter, all we need to know as an audience is that its going to take a long time, at least for Wikus, before he's even going to see help. Same thing with the black liquid, its not really essential that we know why it does what it does, just that 1) Its causing Wikus to turn into a Prawn, and 2) They need it to run the ship, weapons, etc.

This is different from movies that rely on an unrealistic or impossible explanation (within the movie's own universe) as a driving force in the plot, or requires setting logic entirely aside to the point where its uncomfortable to continue watching.

Blomkamp has said that the current ideas in his head don't involve Christopher coming back in 3 years. No idea if that means if its going to take longer than 3, or if District 10 will focus on something else completely.

I was hoping for an alien invasion. :(

Yep, a :up: for the narrative. They didn't try to explain many things.

Like how the prawns and humans understood each other's languages, but neither ever spoke the language of the other.

The assumption a viewer makes I guess is that humans are not able to make prawn click sounds, and vice versa, so each was obliged to learn to understand the language of the other but not to speak it.

Doesn't really need an explanation - leave it up to the viewer's intelligence - and carry on with the engrossing plot.

I liked how they incorporated the toddler prawn. :)

I had the same issues with the blue ray disk. I find a lot of the blue ray disks are like that, feels like the format is still a bit wiggly. Takes a hell of a lot longer to start a movie now and like you said it seemed like you have to watch previews now, though if you find the right button you can skip them.

Which plot holes? I think not bothering to explain the technology or all the "why this or that is that way" is actually pretty good story telling, especially for sci-fi. It made it far more interesting.

I don't think the 3 years, or the black fluid doing impossible things is a plot hole. Why only three years to Andromeda (and like mentioned below, I didn't catch that either)? Because their technology won't let them get there in two. :) Why another galaxy though? Whenever a writer does something like that, I get the feeling he needs an astronomy class, but whatever....

On the one hand, porn is nice. (though I've seen Nessus porn in the #ataricc and iirc 'disturbing' was the most appropriate descriptor). But I'm not sure having a porn forum is necessarily a good idea. At any rate, we should discuss the possible results of that... Of course if it does somehow go negative, we could always shut it down.

Its a choice of whoever produces the disk to lock out menus. I have a few blu rays that will show advertisements before the movie but if you press the "top menu" or "menu" button will skip straight to the menu for the movie and not lock out the command. If I remember correctly Star Trek goes straight to the movie menu after some loading. Its just that whoever made the District 9 disk made some poor choices in what to make available, how to present the movie, how to access the content, and on how to skip past ads.

I remember having to select human or alien, without any words on the screen. I didn't know what it meant at the time.

TPB users are usually kind enough to remove the previews, and if they don't DVD Fab lets me do it myself.
