Too much idle time

We have 21 public holidays, ca. 100 weekend days, and most full time employees seem to be able to count on a month of paid vacation.

That's, like, 130- 150 non-work days every single year for every single full time employee! 4 - 5 months?! :bulb: Don't get me wrong, I love not working, but this sounds insane :bulb: of course many people work the occasional public holiday as well, but still. I can't imagine this is a reality for people in most countries, and I can't help but wonder: what do they DO with their extra 5 months??

In my State we get 10 public holidays each year so if you compare that to the 20+ that Aimless* is talking about it seems like we might be missing out. Yet there is still a tendency for many employers to make workers feel guilty about the PH we do get. For a long time I heard us referred to as "The land of the long weekend" but clearly that is not true, God knows we have the climate for more days of leisure but of course good weather is also good for most business endeavours too.

The poor saps that have to work on Public Holidays usually get very well remunerated (normal rate x 2, x 2.5 or x 3 depending on the industry) with the major exception being the mining industry but they tend to get paid squillions and it was no-doubt factored into the squillions somehow.

The best way to make up for the lack of public holidays is to cash-in the 10 mandatory sick-leave days, preferably on a Friday or Monday (or both if you wanna risk it). As for idle time, well that is mostly done during working hours... :)
