Let's say that I, for some crazy reason, want to buy a digital music album. What'd be my best bet, if I want as little hassle as possible later on? iTunes? Amazon? Something else? This is terra incognita for me!

Knock yourself out.
Amazon. When the CD arrives, rip it.
Anywhere with no DRM on the music.
Could be a CD from Amazon, but you have to wait for shipping, or could be a digital download site... even <shudder> iTunes offers a lot of its music without DRM.
Just make sure you won't have to buy your music again if your iPod gets stolen or your harddrive crashes, or you upgrade your OS, etc, etc.
Amazon, even though the physical CD is usually cheaper because Amazon has more control over the price, their digital music offerings are DRM free.
How are people not aware of Amazon's MP3 store? Many of the albums on Amazon.com for physical purchase are also available for paid download as a high-quality, DRM-free MP3. I've been using it for months, it's great. The collection even has a good amount of obscure stuff.
I also use LaLa, usually when searching for a song on Google because they have some kind of promotional deal. Their songs cost 89 cents.
I've used Amazon a couple times and I have no complaints. I hate iTunes, fuck them. I know people who use this site but I've not used it before. Seems cheaper than Amazon though: www.mp3fiesta.com
