Trump is not known to think about potential unintended consequences to policies.
I have mixed feelings about the US effectively subsidizing its food production industry with exploited under-the-table labor. Is it right to rely on illegals who make less than the legal minimum, who can't unionize, who can be abused without recourse? Maybe Trump breaking the status quo in a white supremacist crusade will inadvertently force America to stop using people this way. Or not. Who knows. America chose this, so, we can only watch where it goes.
The US should subsidize their food production industry further by making these jobs pay much better so that Americans do them rather than exploited undocumented immigrants. In the end, the average person may have to pay more for their food. You’re right - maybe this could end up being a good thing.
That’s not to ignore the xenophobia against migrants. The irony of the majority of the American population being decedents of settler colonialists who replaced the natives through genocide is not lost on me.
Today America is not on a path to paying a living wage to low skill workers. It would be more likely to see all the migrants made into prisoners and then forced to work - without pay - the same fields they were once underpaid to work.
I don't think there's irony at all, its probably the story of humanity from the beginning. Nearly every human population in existence today got where they are by replacing, via genocide, the people that got there before them. Where do you think the Neanderthals went? I think fear of the other and genocide are basic to human nature - its only through great effort we've been able to make such a peaceful world as we have achieved since WW2. And yeah, it's not that peaceful, but it used to be a lot worse. The hard choice is not to commit genocide, because our worst instinct is to be safe as possible, and you can't really be safe while the other is right outside your door.Quote:

In other news, chickens are getting to be in short supply lately - they've been trying to control avian flu by killing millions and millions of them. The price of eggs and chicken are very high right now as a result. And... president Wrecks-It-All just imposed 25% tariffs on our closest trading partners for whatever fucking reason. No idea what that's going to do but I'm guessing increase the cost of everything for everyone in North America.
