When my kids were little I was a sucker for two things -colouring in (drawing in general) and lego, I mean the kids were right there playing with me one minute, the next thing they've long since gone to bed and I was still sitting there colouring in (or making some kickarse machine out of lego).Quote:

Lego is cool but it seems different now, its become all about the specifics of instantly recognisable and commercially successful images (Star Wars or Harry Potter) and less about "what can I make when I click this shaped piece together with that one...?" and its now an expensive toy for what you get.
The big old utility box full of Lego that my kids had was a mixture of the old and new (some of it 30+ years old) and it held almost as many creative possibilities as a full set of Meccano (another one of my favourite junior distractions).
I was proud of my kids when they insisted (despite my protests) on giving their Lego to their much younger cousins because I know how much they (still) loved it and sure enough when we visit them my kids inevitably end up alongside the little ones making "stuff" out of Lego.
Yeah, the theme-specific Legos aren't as much fun as a buncha blocks and a kid's imagination. Lincoln Logs and K'Nex are still good for that.
My kids always mixed their Legos with GI Joes (or my old Barbie dolls :haha: ) and Transformers and Matchbox cars---scale didn't matter so much to them when they made their "set-ups". They'd even use toddler Duplo blocks with Brio train tracks and Playmobil stuff.
I sort of miss those days.
edit: I didn't have daughters, but I remember when Lego Paradiso came out for little girls. Big bust, and no wonder. :p

Answer: they're being stored in bins by future grand-parents. Along with WWI tin soldiers (with their lead paint). Waiting for the return to Imagination and Simplicity.
My Barbie Doll bin holds an old metal Band-Aid box I used to create her kitchen stove, long before Barbie had a kitchen (or car, or condo, or...all those pink plastic things she had later). Back when Band-Aids used to routinely come in metal boxes with flip-tops. Still has the magic marker circles I drew on top for the burners. I used to keep her earrings in a metal Bayer aspirin purse tin, too. :haha:
Was very disappointed to open my Barbie Doll bin years later, and find her plastic earlobes had turned black from the earrings pushed in place. :down:
My in-laws brought us Hubby's old Legos from their attic last year when they thought about selling their house (another story). So we have two huge bins worth of Legos that he and the little one can sort through in a few years. Of course right now it's just another thing sitting in our garage collecting dust :mad:
I know some of my old Lego stuff is probably in my parents' attic. Though technically all of that isn't just mine, since my brother and sister and I mixed all of our sets together in one huge bin.
I dunno, I like a few of the specific sets. And if you aren't like me, you probably can break those sets up and connect them for even more creative uses. (I'm kind of OCD so if it was my stuff I'd want the Star Wars to stay with Star Wars,etc. But I won't freak out if K wants to do it; it's her problem having to clean her toys up when she gets that age)

We used to have the Playmobil Victorian house. Very cool. But the boys and their friends were using the itsy bitsy window box flowers and leaves as IEDs in their Lego set-ups. Pretty flowers to pick---BOOM you just blew your face off. :(
Eventually, the Playmobil house was a victim of WWII destruction. Even stealing the tiny cups and saucers became part of their War Games. They'd use the felt window drapes as "capes" on Lego people.... Enter GI Joe and his all terrain vehicle. Or the [scaled] Playmobil police and ambulance. Then they'd take the stuff outside and mix it with Jurassic Park dinosaurs, or those crappy green plastic army guys. By the time they were ten years old, they were using firecrackers to "blow up" the enemy in trenches. And using plant watering jugs to create floods. Half my kitchen utensils ended up in the backyard as their War Toys. Pasta collander, garlic press, measuring spoons, meat skewers, even drinking straws....they all became part of their War Game play. *sigh*.
I didn't have brothers, so this was new and strange. Definitely creative, but also weird. So destructive....creating scenarios where they'd be the hero, but it never made sense to me. As a girl or mother. They'd roll their eyes at me when I'd ask why they wanted to "blow stuff up" for fun.
Still happens today....when they took advantage of a Halloween snow storm to set off Roman Candles and bottle rockets. I asked Why? and they said it's just fun to light and explode stuff. It makes them happy somehow. Giggling in their glee. (I don't get it, but that's for the other thread.)

It is nice enough though and compared to most South East Asian places I've visited it is very clean, very organised and quite friendly - they don't take kindly to any visitors misbehaving though so I would avoid getting too messy in the pubs or clubs. Don't spit, swear loudly in public or chew gum and you will do just fine...:)
I haven't done Sentosa, read all about it last time I was there but didn't have enough time to check it out.
What is the cuisine like over there? Is it true the region as a whole is predominantly vegetarian? If so, this is another tick for Singapore as Susie is a Veggie.
I had to purify a certain reaction mixture today. I tried to dissolve it in a certain solvent mixture, with intention to purify the resulting solution via column chromatography, when all of a sudden something precipitated out of the solution. I filtered off the precipitate, and did a few quick tests - it was the compound I meant to obtain from the starting mixture, almost completely clean from side products. Sometimes lab surprises can be pleasant. :)
Oh, and also, the incompetent coworker I was bitching about in the "messing with my groove" thread a week or so ago is going to be moved to another lab soon.

Anywho, I ended up with 2 codes for a full download of Child of Eden. The game only goes for ~$30 now, so I need to find a way to trade away the second code for something I want. Almost want to risk holding onto it till the Steam sales and hope I can trade it away for Skyrim or Saint Rows 3.
Had a spur of they moment thing, took a car with some friends and drove to lille, france, to see a 30 second to mars show. It was real good!

Dealer bought back the van, full lease release without inspection. All we had to do was "agree" to drive away in another Honda. Which just so happened to reduce our monthly payments, will double our MPG, and reduce our insurance costs. Its still a lease, for 3 years (even though we only had the van for 18 months), but it really helps when the mortage people start crunching our numbers.
2012 Accord. Same engine displacement and horsepower as my Saturn, with the same combined MPG ratings. Its a sweet car, but its 5 years newer than my Saturn and still doesn't come with some of the tech stuff that the Saturn has. Brandy loves it.

I spent like 2 hours today talking to the 360 and PS3 black friday crowds inside walmart. It was awesome, walked away with a pocket full of screen names, tips, easter eggs, and $28 Batman, Forza 4, and BF3. :D Everyone opening at midnight is rough, but its not even 2am yet and my shopping is done and i'm about to lay down for the night. Walmart doesn't do its outside lines anymore since that one employee was trampled to death, so its interesting watching how people spend their time when they are stuck inside a store for 5+ hours.
While walking along at night in the mountains to the far North in Skyrim, I just saw the aurora borealis. :)
