Why do we call South-Oriental "brown"? Every time I read brown, I expect a conversation about Indians/Pakistanis.
It's a color. What color-shade would you like me to use to describe the new Hello Kitty doll at Build-A-Bear? She's a brown person now. Do we have special colors to use for everyone else with more melanin than I have (that would also include most of the whitey crowd, too)?
So if they know the inmates are doing it, why don't they check the likely spots? Or do we only care when things start catching on fire?Quote:
A three-alarm fire that caused $200,000 in damage to the U.S. Penitentiary in Atlanta and forced officials to evacuate the prison's housing unit was likely caused by prisoners secretly making illegal booze, according to an investigation obtained by The Associated Press.
The blaze was likely ignited when prisoners hiding containers filled with distilled fruit juice in a shower stall reacted with electrical wire that prisoners often used to heat the mixture, according to the report by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.
No one was injured in the December blaze at the prison, which houses medium security male inmates. About 65 firefighters responded to the fire, which spread in a pipe chase near the shower stall and took several hours to put out.
The report said the inmates housed in the cell block were known to make spirits from distilled fruit, often stored in plastic-lined cloth containers made at the prison's tailor shop. The inmates would usually hang these handmade concoctions in a pipe chase behind the showers that was covered by a steel plate.
To try to speed up the fermentation process, they would often heat the "hooch" by using electrical wires that they tied into whatever circuits they could find, the report said.
Investigators found two of these burned hooch containers in the pipe chase near the shower. And they found evidence that someone had tampered with the light fixture in the shower, leading them to conclude the blaze was caused by "human intervention."
A) Prison hooch helps keep inmates happy and under control (less likely to get into fights, fuck with the guards, etc. when you've got a buzz on).
B) "Likely spots" are anywhere you can hide one of those small fruit-salad cups (or according to the article, even anywhere you can hide a ziplock bag with a cloth liner). Way to expensive to search all the "likely spots" at any kind of regular interval. Folks already complain about how much it costs to house an inmate per year... imagine doubling that cost just so prisons can afford to do regular contraband checks.
So that's a vote for we only care when things start catching on fire?
Works for me.
I suppose Lewk's vote is that they should have been executed for their criminal activities without a trial instead of being locked up at all. ;)
I think he'd insist on a trial, but he'd be happy with the rapidity of the Chink system; a month from your arrest to the day they execute you. If it's anyone who should be moving to Ching Ping Chinaland, it's Lewkie!
Hmmm.... I guess it is. Although, to be honest, I'm not sure I even qualify as caring *when* things catch on fire either.
FFS, it happened in a fucking shower. Are prison workers so stupid that no one thought to extinguish the flames by... turning on the conveniently located shower heads?
It's not like the cream of the crop are working at the prison, or anything. Hell, the prisoners are probably cleverer, and these are the ones who were caught.
Dumb shit people display on their vehicles; the fact that the local newspaper had to report this was a little odd:

Bill Moyers is gone from PBS. :( Replaced by a show called 'What You Need to Know', and more corporate control over content.
Ya, the update to the story confirms that theory. I just think it's funny when people use their cars as their outlet for their feelings.
Though, it helps me to pick out the bad drivers. People with lots of religious stickers or the word God misspelled somehow on their vanity license plate are notoriously bad drivers. Usually 9 out of 10 of them.
There's an old absolute nutter living in my area that drives a car covered in Jesus Lives stickers (and the like) and he has [KNOW GOD] for his number plates, several times he has had his plates edited by locals - they black out the K & W.
Nothing like having a religious fanatic help spread the word of atheism. :p
WTF?

'Dead' patient checks himself out of hospital
Posted 7 hours 0 minutes ago
A hospital in Melbourne has offered an apology to a patient for declaring him dead.
Peter Thornton was admitted to the Alfred Hospital in early March for a severe bout of gastro.
He checked himself out after he says he was left lying on a trolley for 12 hours.
On visiting his GP yesterday, he was shown a letter from the Alfred stating he died on March 9.
"I can't believe that a doctor has declared me dead," he said.
Mr Thornton's GP, Dr Beng Eu, says he was shocked to receive the letter.
"This has never happened before, I've never come across this before in all the years I've practised," he said.
The Alfred Hospital has told the ABC it will provide Mr Thornton with a full explanation as soon as an investigation is complete.
Damn, wish some hospital would fuck up and declare me dead - I'd save a fortune on taxes! But all the doctors I know are competent. :(
Stupid dog owners ruin the fun for the rest of us.Quote:
Meet the “Meowlingual,” a high-tech pet tool that is well before it’s time – at least in the United States. The computer-based, cat-to-human language translator purportedly converts cat vocalizations into one of around 200 phrases that are displayed on Meowlingual’s LCD.
Manufactured in Japan where it was an immediate a hit among pet people, “Meowlingual,” alas, never made it to America. It seems that the kitty translator’s expensive predecessor for dogs, “Bowlingual” ($120) didn’t sell too well when the English-version hit the U.S. market. “Please be nice to me" and "You can't beat me" apparently weren’t things we wanted to read on a wireless microphone hanging from Doggie’s collar.
Still, designers dream – and build prototypes – for high-tech devices to sell to the pet-owning public. Here’s a look at a few we may see in the near future.

I do think the cat-cam could be entertaining, although my desire to actually watch Stripes kill rodents is fairly limited.

What the fuck is wrong with Japan?!?!?!
For sheer stupid, see the Man saws Girlfriend article... though the "rotten penis tribe" has funnier illustrations. All probably NSFW, by the way.
And links to even *MORE* fucked up articles at the bottom of those articles. :bulb: (Who knew it was possible to get more fucked up than "man uses power-saw as vibrator, surprised when things end badly." :bulb:)
Yet they figured out how to make water solid. The hell, Japan.

OBAMA CHEATING SCANDAL: SHOCKING NEW REPORTS
UPDATED: Reports out of Washington, DC: PRESIDENT OBAMA in a shocking cheating scandal after being caught in a Washington, D.C. Hotel with a former campaign aide.
A confidential investigation has learned that Obama first became close to gorgeous 35 year-old VERA BAKER in 2004 when she worked tirelessly to get him elected to the US Senate, raising millions in campaign contributions.
Now, the investigators are searching for a hotel surveillance videotape.
While Baker has insisted in the past that "nothing happened" between them, reports reveal that top anti-Obama operatives are offering more than $1 million to witnesses to reveal what they know about the alleged hush-hush affair.
Among those being offered money is a limo driver who says in 2004 that he took Vera to a secret hotel rendezvous in a Washington hotel where Obama was staying.
An ENQUIRER reporter has confirmed the limo driver's account of the secret 2004 rendezvous and has also learned that on-site hotel surveillance video camera footage could provide indisputable evidence to the investigation.

Clearly just rumors, but I wonder how long it will take for the mainstream media to pick up on this, if they even do at all.
You're asking how long it will take for the media to pick up on a "story" reported by the National Enquirer? I wouldn't hold my breath.
Well, of course, there was that John Edwards love child thing that the National Enquirer got a Pulitzer nomination for this year, so, who knows? It could even turn out to be legit, and the National Enquirer will get another Pulitzer nomination. In back-to-back years, even... I think that's gonna be my birthday wish, if only because of my utter contempt for the MSM.
I'd find it both hilarious and pathetic, however I'm not sure how many politicians can make it without getting smeared with this sort of crap.

A Cumming man is accused of biting two 8-year-olds.
Gordon Kent Nelson, 44, is accused of biting the girls in two separate incidents, one on March 29 of this year and the other in August of 2009, according to Forsyth County Sheriff Ted Paxton.
One of the girls was bitten above the hip and the other on her left calf, Paxton said. Although neither girl required extensive medical treatment, one was treated and released at a local hospital emergency room.
In the 2009 incident, Paxton said, the victim was a sleep-over guest of his daughter in Nelson’s home. In the most recent incident, the victim was the daughter of a friend. Paxton said the incident occurred in the friend’s home while Nelson was alone with the child.
Nelson turned himself in at the Forsyth County Jail early Tuesday morning and is being held without bond pending a first appearance court hearing.
I think this one is better... maybe because it's around where I live, and I happen to believe that more of the kids around here should be punched in the head. (It's even the Walmart I go to, on the rare occasions I go to Walmart!)

Man punched little children in head for fun, police say
Northwest Side resident allegedly used keys in fist

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH
Caught in the act at his local Walmart on Wednesday night, Ralph Conone admitted that for months he'd been punching children on the backs of their heads with his keys in his fist, Columbus police said yesterday.
The 68-year-old grandfather also told them why, police said: He got a kick out of it.
"He stated that he does this because of the excitement of being able to do it and get away with it with the parents right there," said Sgt. John Hurst of the special victims' bureau. "He'll just strike them in the head and just turn around and walk away."
Conone, of 5687 Shadowbrook Dr. on the Northwest Side, is jailed on two misdemeanor counts of assault after an alert mother realized he had done something to her two boys, ages 6 and 7, while they shopped about 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Walmart at 2700 Bethel Rd.
Tonight, that mother talked about the incident. She asked that only her first name be used, saying she's afraid to have Conone know her children's names.
Vanessa said she was looking over the plums in the store's fruit section, with her boys nearby, when she heard her younger son cry out, "He hit me!"
At first, Vanessa thought he was talking about a fight with his older brother, until the 6-year-old added, "The man hit me."
She said her son pointed to a man who was heading out the front door.
Vanessa said she followed him outside and confronted him. He denied hitting the boy, but she grabbed him by the arm, led him back inside and asked store personnel to call police.
"I just knew I couldn't let him go," she said.
Vanessa said she took her son's hat off and found some blood. A Columbus Division of Fire rescue squad was called and her son was treated for a minor cut.
A store security tape confirmed that the man had struck her son, police say.
Vanessa said she was surprised to learn that her other son also had been hit.
The store surveillance camera also showed two other boys being struck by Conone the same night while their parents were distracted briefly, Hurst said. Police hope to identify and speak with them.
Conone said he would wait until a parent wandered briefly out of sight before striking the child with his keys between his fingers. The child would cry out, and he would slip away unnoticed.
Investigators said Conone doesn't appear to have a prior criminal record and told them he'd never tried to abduct or otherwise harm the children.
"He was surprised (Wednesday) night that he had caused injury to the child," Hurst said.
Conone told police that he would commit the assaults while shopping. But police said he didn't appear to shop for anything Wednesday night, and he later admitted going into the store with the intent to strike the children, Hurst said.
Police suspect there have been other incidents that were not reported, likely because parents weren't sure what had caused their children to cry.
Conone told authorities that he'd committed the assaults since January and that all were at the Bethel Road Walmart. He selected only little children.
"He told us it was because they were unable to defend themselves," Hurst said.
Conone had been married for 42 years before his wife, Ruth, divorced him in 2007. She spoke briefly with reporter Brittany Westbrook of WBNS-TV (Channel 10), saying that she left her husband because he was manic-depressive and wouldn't take his medication.
Ruth Conone said that her ex-husband, who is retired from the Ohio Department of Development, has no history of this behavior, but said he needs help for mental-health issues.
(He got five years probation and a $150 fine. Yippie, legal system!)
Gotta admit, been times wanted to rap a snotty kid in the head before, but damn.
The punishment was awfully light.
Yup, moral of the story - better to go around punching kiddies for months than drive after a few beers, once. Yippie, legal system.
MOral of the story: Sometimes even lewk is right...
Florida's version: We arrested a grandmother after she slapped her granddaughter for cussing.
My gosh I just saw the flood damage done to Tennessee on tv. WTF it drown Nashville's only sewage treatment plant....and all their historical buildings....
So today we had a small presentation to a group of SS students
We're wrapping it up when this girl starts looking funny, then her eyes roll back into her head, and she collapses onto the floor in that funny slow-motion of someone who's lost all muscle control and they're folding up like a deflating tent
She comes back to, sits on the floor for a bit, then we get her up to a chair, she seems a little better, and her teacher tries to get her up again so they can get her outside to some fresh air. Her face goes expressionless, eyes loll back over and she collapses on her teacher. They set her down on the chair again, but she slowly slips back to sitting on the floor.
At this point we wise up and haul her to the lobby while one of the other presenters calls the paramedics. She did seem better by this point, Finagle knows why.
It wasn't until after the situation was over and we were alone in the lab again that my co-worker pointed out she had pissed herself, the chair and on the floor. So I had a hilarious time laughing at him as he wiped the floor with ethanol.
The best part? She's the second person to have fainted in our lab during a presentation like this.
So, yay, pee!
Not WTF, but we don't have a "What made you go teehee today?" thread.

While Atlanta Braves manager Bobby Cox was being honored by U.S. Senators on Tuesday, staffers spent time trying to smear out an offensive misspelling on his cake.
Sources told Channel 2 Action News reporter Scott MacFarlane that the official Senate bakery handled the task of baking the cake that was supposed to say, “Thanks for 50 great years Bobby Cox.”
Instead, someone misspelled Cox’s last name – making it an offensive word.
MacFarlane said there was open speculation that a Braves-hating baker was responsible. Quite a few Nationals and Phillies fans work there.
Cox did not see the embarrassing misspelling. Staffers did try to smear it off, MacFarlane said, but once they realized they made it worse, they cut the piece out and threw it away.
The misspelling didn't damper Cox's feelings about being honored by the Senators. He said being personally honored by U.S. Senators was more meaningful than the Braves White House honor after 1995 World Series.
Anybody here ever make a dry ice bomb with a two liter bottle?
Kids swallow dry ice.
Ness - what kind of students are "SS" students anyway...
And whats your presentation about, to make them faint?
Senior secondary, not schutzstaffel
What a let down.
How do you think I feel :(
I'm sorry, but if you're dumb enough to swallow dry ice on a dare (at any age), this is nature's way of telling you you're a non-viable individual.
