I hate to say, it but Boris has been making good progress. Just 20 days ago, the EU was insisting that the backstop was 'essential', but he's already managed to talk them down to 'indispensable'. I fully believe that by October, he will have gotten them all the way down to 'crucial' or even 'vital' and they may have entirely run out of synonyms by October 31st, and then where will they be? They'll have no choice but to accept a deal on whatever terms we want. What a great man.

The ONS is now more open about the issues with their LTIM estimates that I pointed out previously, and immigration from the EU is indeed plummeting even though students have continued to visit. Sectors reliant on EU8 migrants are seeing difficulties with finding enough workers. Johnson going back on the Tories' pledge to their voters doesn't change the fact that the UK's access to this labor has been and will continue to be restricted. You might call this impressive, but it is just a continuing series of preventable self-owns.

The British press is so dumb and so mendacious that the clearest and most truthful leader in the EU has to expend additional effort on ensuring that British media doesn't derpify or just plain lie about her statements.

That has always been our position, Rand: The backstop is only needed for as long as there's no concrete implementation of a solution. If you come up with something that works, great! The backstop is not needed.

Which is why you wonder why the backstop is such a big deal for these guys, given that they think the problem at the Northern Ireland border is easy to solve.

The backstop has become such a totem because it exposes how at its most basic level Brexit is a lie. Brexit was supposed to be about taking back control, restoring Britain to its old glory amongst the great nations of the world. The reality of Brexit is that it's about loss of control, in the case of the NI border even abdication of control. And in stead of Britain re-emerging, it's being put in its place and has to accept that it's not just Brussels that's pushing it around but even bloody Dublin takes precedence.

Resistance against the WA is Brexitard nostalgics hanging on to their dreams.

The border is easy to solve with compromise. With the backstop in place the EU has no reason to compromise which is why it is so totemic to them to get this bullshit in now.

Yeah, Rand, "compromise". What are you talking about here exactly? In detail, please. I mean, it's easy so it should be easily explained?

Also, while you're at it, explain how your compromise does not collide with rules, laws and other deals the EU has to uphold. Also remember the fact that the EU has Norway and Switzerland to consider. Also, in case it slipped your mind, remember that a non-member does not get the same levels of access as a member. Lastly, why should we trust you when you obviously don't care about what you said yesterday?

Marc Rutte has said explicitly that he agrees with the message Merkel and Macron have given Johnson about Brexit. He summed that message up as :

1. the backstop is indispensible given the red lines the Brits have brought to the table.
2. alternatives to the backstop have been looked for for over three years, it's not very likely that we'll find any alternatives before the 1st of november, but we're willing to look at these alternatives.
3. any such alternative can be addressed in the political declaration.

Parliament is being shut for 4 sitting days before the annual state opening occurs for the first time in over 2 years.

Parliamentarians didn't want to change their six weeks holiday but you'd swear 4 days was the end of the world.

It's the govt's intent that makes this move so questionable from a constitutional perspective. Not surprised to see that RB's carefully cultivated simplism has blinded him to this.
