At the time the case for Rotterdam was clear, and it was only the peculiar voting rules in the UK that stopped the move. But either way the case being made was that the 'other half' would not be worse off by the new unitary structure.

Nonsense. There's not going to be any softening on state aid at all. If anything the EU will be more demanding rather than less.
Assuming that not walking away from the talks means that the UK is going to get what it wants is for the birds.
I am becoming more and more a supporter of a no-deal scenario for phase II of Brexit; the departure of the UK from the SM and CU. With the utter lack of preparations for a hard exit on the British side and the inability to take control such a scenario would mean that EU-UK trade would be subject to 'British' non-existant rules, so basically no rules at all for EU companies. The other way round, UK-EU trade would be subject to WTO rules (in essence our rules), and our side being entirely capable of controling it. It would be an incredible advantage for the EU for a good while, at least untill the Brits get their act together.
If we continue to negotiate any agreement with the EU, the disadvantage bearing on the Brits will be so heavy that this can only be in the interest of the EU.
