We let insurance companies dictate health policy a long time ago, and by default that meant we didn't give science -- or medical professionals -- the respect they deserved. It's N95 masks you're supposed to save for professionals - they're the ones that make it reasonably safe to breathe around the infected. Surgical masks are what they're talking about when they say you should wear them for short jaunts, but they mostly protect other people from you by capturing moisture as you exhale it.
