Schwarzenegger 2012!
SARAH 2012!
That's kind of the joke behind it.
Was very funny during the discussions about Schwarzenegger and whether they should change the constitution to allow foreigners to run for presidency to say:
"Yeah, we Germans are all for you guys to have an Austrian as a president! Worked real fine for us last time!"
Well, we didn't actually have a German dictator...
You're all Teutons, right?
Well then it's all settled. I have German AND English roots. My mother was adopted so....I could have any link deemed important. My kids have an Austrian gene. My sister is married to a Greek.
Do I get to be Queen now?
Its like the No True Scotsman fallacy mated with Godwin's law...
My genealogy books show a clear link to royalty. The fifteenth cousin twice removed from the Earl of Yorkshire. Something like that. But they decided to leave England and make the ocean voyage to the new land of colonies. From what I gather, they weren't making this journey for religious reasons but for prosperity. They just realized the English empire was dying and wanted to spread their wings. They wanted to feel freeeee, not going in island circles. Some would say that's capitalism but I think it was island-phobia, and it's probably genetic.
Do I win now? :D
You were equating Feudalism with Dictatorship, don't play dumb. I thought you were oh-so knowledgable in the area of politics?
Seems as if I have to revise that opinion.
I mean, first you give us a false equation, next you try to pose the exception as the general rule.
Or is the Queen of England a dictator? Karl the Great a dictator? Richard Lionheart?
I'd love to see you argue that one with a History professor. He'd probably slap you around a bit with a big fish.
I could put this in a couple of places, but this seems best right now:
Not sure where you all were when Carter gave this speech. Guessing most read about it as history. I don't really remember this speech either, but I do recall the time, the era. Carter was considered a wimpy leftist that most Americans disagreed with, especially on the future of energy. You'd have to know the context at the time too.....new EPA standards, OPEC, oil embargoes, lines for gas, rationed gas based on license plate numbers, a very deep recession, millions of very angry unemployed people.
My parents' opinions mattered at this time, because I was just a young kid who didn't understand much, and it was a test between alliances for wisdom. My folks were Republicans, but then all this shit happened, and my dad died, and I had to think for myself. I still tended to hang on my mom's perspectives, because my whole life was her, her family, her friends. And there was a lot of agreement there, birds of a feather flocking together.
Seeing Carter's speech (plus other things) makes me see things differently tho, in hindsight. Mostly how sad it is that the majority of Americans just couldn't see what energy policy meant. But we ended up fighting a few wars for oil. And here we are at the same point we were in the 70s. Wanting leaders who can take us forward, fighting leaders who can take us forward, because we just don't know....if it will all work out....so we keep doing the same old things that led us to this place. This place we need to move away from. We need to evolve but we're just too skeptical to get out of our own rut.
:(
Can anyone tell me what a dictator is or is not?
Be nice, GGT! ;)
Of course millions of people didn't want the energy policies! Hell, cutting back on oil and gas drilling, along with coal mining, was what put them out of work in the first fucking place!
I absolutely hate getting into this kind of discussion since most here are from large states that don't have the minerals revenue that Wyoming has! Why in the hell would anyone think Wyoming would benefit from losing this money? Sure, we need to be exploring sustainable energy sources, but you do realize that a wind-turbine field, after it's built, only takes 2 or 3 guys to maintain? Go to wind energy instead of oil, gas, and coal, and you are putting thousands of Wyomingites out of work. Continue with the drilling and mining, and we are actually having a population influx because we are hiring and people who are out of work elsewhere are moving here!
No I don't forget. I also know that a state that is able to provide jobs, especially now, should be looked at as a business example!
