Starting to, but every train north of NYC is basically cancelled. Even though it was downgraded to a tropical storm by the time it moved north of NYC, everything north of the city just went to hell.
Did you lose any food and such with the power outage?
Luckily no, we had my father's generator (my parents are on vacation) and we ran it every so often to keep the freezer cold.

Damn. My friend in Newport News basically boarded her entire house and William and Mary was evacuated. But, I got to chill with my friends thanks to the hurricane alert.

I assume you've heard of the flooding in the Catskills, Dread? I have family in the region, and its pretty tough up there from what I've heard.

We lost power on Sunday and didn't get it back until late Monday. Comcast was down even after power was restored. Too many trees falling in the wind (but the howling did sound nice in the eerily quiet non-electric dark night, coming in waves and crescendos). Brought fresh cool air in, left debris behind everywhere. Tons of utility trucks around and chain saws in use yesterday and today.
The flooding in Vermont and New Jersey is astonishing. :( Reports said the water rushing down from the Catskills was more forceful than Niagara Falls. :eek:
That sounds about right from what I've heard from family. Its nasty up there.
Just came back from Upstate NY, where the power outages basically ended 2-3 nights ago. Most astonishingly to me, the Port-Jervis commuter rail line was totally washed out in places.

They basically have to re-build enormous sections of the line (which gets small ridership in the first place).
I wonder how much of rails and bridges being washed away was due to our historically poor maintenance/upgrading of these things? Plus practically ancient storm drains that were built 50+ years ago, when there were fewer paved roads and diverted water run-off. It's like we're limping into the 21st century with a 1950's infrastructure, because "it's too expensive" to have 100 year plans. :(
I think the answer is that hurricanes and storms tend to cause flooding and damage.
Should we really compare this storm's impact on Vermont to what happened Vermont in 1927?

Ya, crazy stuff, huh. Somehow I'm supposed to find my way to Philly suburbs to check on my sister's house while she's out of town, but sections of 30, 83, 222, 272, 276, 476 and 76 (the PA turnpike) are closed due to flooding...or chunks of the roads or bridges are just....gone. :eek:
Another strange twist is that my best friend called to say she won't be coming to town for my ex-husband's wedding (for several reasons) but it's just as well. Middletown (MDT, Harrisburg) had lots of flooding, and not sure if I could get there to pick her up because I'd have to use variations of the 30/83/76 routes. Even though the airport says flights are landing and taking off, they're not being too honest about folks getting there or getting out by car....
Plus, call me superstitious or paranoid, but her flight home was for Sunday 9/11/11, and I'm okay with her not flying on that day.
