Not necessarily incompetent, but the way they teach math at SS isn't....Quite the best for our purposes. I mean, for not so math intensive further education it's pretty great, but it's kind of spoon-fed to them and it takes a couple of months before everyone gets used to stuff like varying notation across text books and what have you. And part of the problem is that we can't/won't have a crash math course for freshmen before the first actual courses start, but that's another barrel of bollocks.

And due to some peculiarities of our system, our program does get about three times the amount of freshmen than we graduate each year. Dunno if that'll change with the new, improved university system, we live in interesting times...

I honestly don't know what'd happen if you actually were their TA, most of these hook-ups tend to happen in student parties and similar from what I know (instead of frats/sororities, we have organizations aimed at various majors and various parts of Finland); ostensibly people know not to sign up to be TA'd by their fuck-buddies.

Unfortunately, my field doesn't have much in the way of cumulative knowledge, so we have to start from nothing in freshmen and sophomore classes (also, most of the students in those classes aren't poli sci majors). You'd probably have a heart attack if you saw the math proficiency (or should I say deficiency) here. :noob:

I don't know if it's just my department, but people hook-up with other grad students and/or university employees. It's very rare to see an undergrad going out with a grad student or a grad student with a professor. When such relationships do happen, negative rumors are spread incessantly.

I have a very limited view, but the larger stigma is in intra-lab couplings, because that's just asking for drama. ("You don't poop where you eat", etc.) No idea how well this generalizes across campus.

There is a taboo against that as well, but I've seen several couples here break it without overly negative consequences (even after the breakup).

Yeah, it's the potential break-up that's key. If you make it, cool, you're an item, go fuck yourselves silly, but if it doesn't work out, people tend to take sides and it's just ugly on several fronts.

Seems to match my experiences in humanities, business and engineering colleges over at OSU, so I'm thinking it's an America thing. Puritanical and whatnot about romantic relationships (or heaven forbid, one-off fucking), whereas Europe is much less so.

Not that it made much difference to me, IT/CS is a sausage-fest, and military history studies are completely woman-less, once you get past the intro courses that all the ROTC chicks take, so, yeah, not being gay, that never once came up in all my university days. :( Bummer. I think I'd have like either side of that coin... banging boots with a tech-geek or military studies graduate as a freshman, or banging a nice, tight 18/19 year old freshman while I was taking those graduate level courses.... mmm. Oh well, you just can't go back. Damn Einstein. :(

Nope, not even in this country. Hell, they teach 050-level math courses (remedial) at every big university for kids who didn't get geometry and algebra right during high school, and at least at OSU, intro level calc is a 101-104 series you can take to satisfy GEC ["general education curriculum"] requirements. If you're not majoring in engineering or a science that requires higher level math, intermediate calculus is the furthest you'll go, and you can get away with not touching anything above advanced algebra, even over here. Meh.

Based on yesterday, they did okay. And the point was, previous years they've had trouble moving from the Euler notation to the Leibniz one, and based on your post most of them have a much better idea on what a derivative actually is. But sure. And naturally I have no idea how "AB" or "BC" compare to the courses in SS here, so

They're the highschool courses for the college equivalents of Calc I (A), Calc II (B), and Calc III (C). Calc I is differential, Calc II is integral, and I think Calc III is more of the same, but it's been a while since I took the course. If you take BC, then once you get to college you get one more semester of integrals then you do multivariable, I think.

I'm pretty sure Calc courses aren't required for college in the US. I think everything from trig up is usually offered at a college. Probably shouldn't expect to get in anywhere good if you haven't taken extra maths in highschool, though. At least not if you're majoring in an engineering or science discipline.

I'm still struggling with the Bra-Ket-notation. Yes, I get it's easier. And, yes, I get the concepts behind it. However, writing something like <a| <a| still overloads my brain when I try to decode that stuff.

That might be right. That's actually what I typed at first, but I went back and edited because I thought I remembered there being another class before multivariable. All my math courses are starting to blur together.

Many of the engineers are difficult to interact with, they might have a minor case of the old assbugers, but I guess if you've read books, you're naturally going to be wittier and more inclined to talk to others. I still prefer the engineers though. I'm on an engineering floor (i think my roommate and I are the only two commerce studnets) and it's great. We can study whenever we want since they are mainly quiet and don't get drunk every night. so doing homework and studying is easier.

I took BC over a year ago. I'm pretty sure I remember how to do optimization, first, second, and third derivatives, area under the curve, and integrals. I probably forgot the tricker stuff, but i guess I just suck at explaining stuff. What do they cover in your course anyways?

Mhmm, my school required us to take a college-level math class in addition to three years of a foreign language (or two years of two languages) and a few other small prerequisites before being eligible for an advanced diploma. And the track in most high schools in virginia goes pre-calc. Then Calc AB if you took pre-calc regular or Calc BC if you took pre-calc honors. You move on to Multi variable matrix algebra or something during the first semester and the second semester you take linear algebra.

It was required for my Chemistry degree, but fuck if I've ever really needed it for anything. The professors taught like they had just been hired off the street; one guy spoke such broken English I couldn't concentrate. As for me and college being 'effin' amazing this place is a proverbial whorehouse. It's easier to get laid here than trying to find a nonsensical line in "The Room." They decided to go with the central planning route by just handing out condoms by the bucket full at all major functions and centers. When you can't beat it, regulate it. Though that is an interesting way to look at it; really, college is where you do get a wide variety of people to interact with. It's one of the few places you can test the waters with different types of people with different cultural and personal backgrounds. After that, you usually end up hanging around the same kind of people the rest of your life (depending on your profession and lifestyle of course).

First of all, have you ever thought about why these rules about sexual activity exist, and the peculiar way they're laid out in the Abrahamic texts? About how, for example, there's a lot said about actual sexual intercourse involving penile penetration, but not a single mention of oral sex, or lesbian sex? Is it maybe possible, then, that the issue isn't actually sex, but something else? Because sex wasn't the issue - the issue was property rights and responsibility (don't ruin another person's future by breaking her hymen, unless you're willing to provide for her).

The prohibition on sex outside of marriage that exists [well, sort of exists] in Abrahamic religion is based on ancient customs and behaviors which have been rendered obsolete by technology and cultural changes, so unless you plan on living in a backwards culture that still treats women as property, and only cares about the property rights your sons, these old sexual decrees have no relevance to modern life. And, believe it or not, adhering to those now irrelevant customs is harmful to you if you plan on living in modern society (in a great many ways you're not even aware of, yet).

With all that said, some free advice I'm fairly sure you'll ignore follows.

Do yourself a favor, and honor your god's instructions to do good to your fellow man by going out and having some sex. Make her feel good, (or him, if you swing that way) make you feel good, honor the instructions of your chosen deity and leave irrelevant, ancient customs where they belong, in the past. Not only does it feel good, but it's good for you too.
