I don't know Dread's particular gym, and maybe he's being pessimistic about the staff. But in general I wouldn't be surprised if his assumption about the fate of the Kindle if he handed it in was reasonable.
It's hardly unique to New York. Take a bunch of people who are overworked and (feel like they're) underpaid, give them anonymity, and I'm willing to bet most would take the object given the chance.
(I don't actually think all people in NYC are dirty cheating scoundrels. I just hate NYC and I'll take any opportunity to make a dig. ;) )
You have overworked, underpaid people in Tokyo too, still people there leave their smart-phones on the table to reserve it when they get the food at self service restaurants and expect that the phone is still there and the table is still free when they come back.
Japan has a culture of shame; the West (not just New York) does not. Try leaving something out in the open in Rome or London.
I quite recently left my phone on the counter a shop. They put it in a safe and I was able to collect it the next day. I also left my wallet at my gym in a similar way to this story - either someone handed it in or the staff picked it up but I was able to just go and picked it up the next time I was in there. Also, when I was a little boy I remember leaving my gameboy in a hotel room in France somewhere. Thing turned up in the post a few weeks later.
I am not so sure about London, our UK members maybe can tell you more. Southern Europe is definitely a place where you should keep an eye on your stuff.Quote:

The sheer volume of thefts suggests that stealing isn't that much of a cultural taboo. It's not like these people are stealing to buy food either.
Theft is still a cultural taboo in the west. Even if you had anonymity from getting caught/held responsible for stealing something, if you told your friends most would probably tell you to try to return it. Even if they themselves might do it in similar circumstances. It's still taboo.

Now, as you can see, America has a lower literacy rate than four other countries picked specifically by my on the grounds of a) having a higher literacy rate than America and b) being popularly perceived as kinda underdeveloped. This now renders your point completely invalid. Whatever the fuck it was.
Just need to a way to hide the 99% figure with some harder to interpret raw numbers to make it look like there is a problem with literacy in the US.
It could suggest all sorts of things, eg. that they have very active thieves. Of course, we're talking about burglaries and robberies on the one hand and Dreadnaughting on the other hand. Sigh, I forgot my iPad on a plane. I have little - very little - hope of ever finding it again as it takes the airline 48 hours to even register anything found. And of course the damn thing was in flightmode, so no hope of using finding it through the internet.
