At this point, we have to ask if the governments covid response itself wasn't impeded by the near constant parties taking place at number 10.
One of the numerous Downing Street parties that we know about right now was the leaving do of a man called James Slack, then Downing Street director of communications. Where was he leaving to? To be Deputy Editor of the Sun newspaper. So, that's at least one journalist who knew about at least one of these parties (probably more, realistically) since at least March '21 and he chose to keep the story out of the papers. Lil' concrete example of collaboration between media and government for you there, in case you think it's all Pepe-board style theory-crafting.
Oh, and the Met would have known as well, because police officers are stationed all over Downing Street providing security. So, they chose to turn a blind eye to this stuff during a period when they were arresting old ladies for sitting on park benches and violently attacking a vigil being held for a women who was murdered by a police officer.
What I'm saying is that while it is true that Johnson is massive piece of shit - just an unmitigated pigfuck of a man - and it'll be a great day when he goes but also, he's being used as scapegoat for a much deeper and more pervasive corruption.

Hoping this fact will prove to be the key to getting some sort of legal accountability. It's one thing to say you won't enforce lockdown regs retroactively—it's another entirely to say you'll permit police to ignore blatant lockdown violations that have occurred in their presence.
Just a really bad time to be a middle-aged English Johnsonista all 'round :oQuote:
Not even trying to keep track of these anymore

At this point, Johnson's best bet is to portray #partygate as a GRU op intended to undermine UK leadership just in time for the invasion of Ukraine. People will be happy to believe this is all due to intervention by a hostile foreign power—it's better than recognizing they voted for destructive assclowns.

"The days of the elderly being threatened with prison sentences and bailiffs knocking on doors, are over."
It was this government that reversed free tv licenses for the over 75s.
Wonder if the Murdoch papers are going to 'suddenly' decide that partygate wasn't that big a deal after all.
This country is so comically corrupt: https://www.theguardian.com/politics...-michelle-mone
I mean, imagine being an educated adult ostensibly capable of telling right from wrong and still defending these crooks.
I think they'll want to twist the dagger properly, after the report is released :o

On a positive note, the Police and Crime bill, aimed at severely curtailing the right to protest was absolutely bodied in the lords last night.
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-60032465
Quote:
Peers voted against the government's plans to:
- create a new offence of "locking on", a tactic used by protesters to make it difficult to remove them, carrying with it a penalty of up to a year in prison
- create a new offence of obstructing the construction or maintenance of major transport works
- make it an offence for a person to interfere with the use or operation of key national infrastructure, including airports, the road network, railways and newspaper printers
- allow police officers to stop and search a person or vehicle if it was suspected an offence was planned, such as causing serious disruption or obstructing major transport works
- allow police to stop and search anyone at a protest "without suspicion"
- allow individuals with a history of causing serious disruption to be banned by the courts from attending certain protests
Peers voted for new amendments to the bill that would:
- scrap the power to impose conditions on protest marches judged to be too noisy
- protect Parliament Square as a place to protest
- require police officers to tell the truth in public inquiries
- demand an urgent review into the prevalence of drink-spiking offences
- restrict the imposition of tougher sentences for blocking a highway to major routes and motorways (rather than all roads)
- scrap the Vagrancy Act 1824, which makes it a crime to beg as well as sleep rough
- make misogyny a hate crime by giving the courts the power to treat misogyny as an aggravating factor in any crime and increase sentences accordingly
Oh my God what a garbage fire...

They're just sort of saying words now. Anything, just get it out there. Doesn't matter: if there's a new PM, they kill the Queen. Constitutionally, you can only have one PM per Queen, so if they get a new one she has to be put down. There you go, that'll do. Just go out there and say that on TV.
I kinda just wanna see interviews with random middle-aged conservative English dudes being confronted with one news item after another with the camera zoomed in on their sad little faces

This is incredible writing. I want interviews with Johnson stans. I want a video of partygate set to the Shepard tone.
So. After weeks of refusing to investigate and ignoring evidence the Met has swooped in at the last minute and decided that they are going to investigate after all. This means that, unfortunately, Sue Grey's report has to be delayed until after the investigation as it touches on matters now under investigation by the police, and it could be potentially prejudicial. Alas.

Picture, if you will, a London Metropolitan Police officer standing outside Number 10, like in so many iconic pictures, except he's awkwardly pretending not to notice the fact that caramelldansen is blasting out of an open upstairs window complete with flashing coloured lights, while across town his colleges are beating the absolute shit out of the vigil for Sarah Everard under the pretence that the gathering broke Covid restrictions.
The events the Met are investigating are, presumably, the ones which would have been illegal and hence, the most politically damaging to the Johnson.

This is very bad news for you, the person reading this post. Many people are saying that your position has become untenable, and you should consider your future.

Conservatives increasingly believe themselves to be above the law, flouting its dictates and principles even when there is no morally defensible reason for doing so.
