The issues only matter so much. Rubio was viewed as being more moderate (and positioned himself in that way), even if his voting record didn't reflect that moderation. Ditto for Kasich. But likability in particular would have doomed Cruz. He's hated by everyone he's ever worked with. He comes off as a slimy backstabber. This would have cost him some Republican votes, and he sure as hell wouldn't have picked up any Democratic or independent one. But as you say, this doesn't matter anymore. For the sake of the GOP and this country, Trump needs to be demolished. I'm talking 100 electoral votes. What I find most amusing is how anyone thinks any politician writes their own speeches. The general idea may be the politicians (maybe...) but there are a ton of behind the scene folks actually writing it and editing it.
