Well, it's like the Star Wars trilogy. The movies weren't made in sequence.
That still doesn't explain why you could denigrate Les Miserable (the movie) as something heinous, because a pauper thief was portrayed as a protagonist, when you hadn't even seen it. :donkey:

Not impressed really. A little disappointed. Felt too much like a kiddies movie. Had none of the import nor sense of occasion nor drama that any of the LotR films had.
I guess it reflects the material Jackson had to work with; The Hobbit being that much more of a child's book.
Saying that, Gollum was truly excellent.
I liked it; it was long but didn't seem to drag as much as the last LOTR movie did. Gollum was the best part; and of course Rivendale is always lovely to see on film. Loved listening to the dwarves singing, too. I could see where it would be confusing; considering how much further the journey is, they've barely scraped the surface of it. And the introduction of characters that weren't even in the book! Though, I don't mind if a story deviates a bit in films. I don't know if I'll enjoy the next installment; if it is to be as long as this one was then I'm sure they will spend quite some time in the forest with spiders, and I really don't want to watch an hour of giant spiders on screen. It was bad enough in one of the Harry Potter movies. I really am excited to see Smaug though!

Knowing what happens in LotR though, you really have to be impressed at the convoluted manner in which Gandalf went about getting the ring into the fires of Mount Doom over the course of decades. Also Gandalf offhandedly gave both Bilbo and Frodo some sage advice about killing people that spared Gollum twice. So that he could throw himself and the ring into Mount Doom on accident.Quote:

I watch most movies on late night cable. Last night was "Jonah Hex". Never heard of it (I'm not a comic book reader). But it started out fairly interesting, combining drawn graphics with cinematic movie tools. The narrating voice seemed familiar, not too far from his dad's as a Brolin. John Malkovich and Aidan Quinn were early characters....hard to disguise them in any movie.
Parts of it were quite good, especially the scenery and vivid colors, as part of memory or dream sequences.
So, I watched the whole damn movie. Kept me entertained on a sleepless night. Pretty much a made-for-tv thing that likely went from production directly to cable or disc. Maybe there are comic book fans who see it more favorably, dunno. It was a D minus movie, as movies go, but if it's part of a series with a cult following, then maybe it's a C plus?
I can't figure out how movie ratings work. :sour:
For not knowing a damn thing about Jonah Hex I didn't think the movie was that bad. But I guess I have a spot for sci-fi westerns, and there are so few of those lately.
but yeah, rottentomatoes gives it a 23% so a D- isn't surprising.
Eyes Wide Shut. Not what I expected it to be, but very good.
Then I found out they took over 400 days to shoot it :bulb:

Finally made it into The Hobbit. Nice movie.
But the previews. Oh my god. Trailer for a science fiction film. First glance: A variation on the bodysnatcher theme. Then it happens: "Based on the book by Stephenie Meyer!"
Can someone shoot this women before she ruins another genre for the rest of humanity? I mean, Vampires can be considered scorched earth now. And judging from this trailer I suffered through, she didn't have an original thought in the meantime. Just from watching this trailer I predict the story to culminate in "love wins the day and the girl just needs her love interest!"
Which was followed by another movie of this sort, this time a kind of "Harry Potter goes Chick Flick" or somesuch nonsense.

Then there was the preview to Les Miserables. Now, you may know that German movies are usually dubbed. Some genius had the bright idea (because it's a musical with the actor themselves doing the singing) to dub just the speaking parts and leave the singing parts alone (i.e. in English).
When I was watching the Hobbit a month ago, there were 4-5 consecutive commercials for post-apocalyptic movies...
Everyone booed the stephenie meyer preview in my theater too.
The Will Smith preview looked fun but overly predictable (surprise, someone is dead). The Star Trek preview was nothing more than "look star trek", didn't explain a damn thing to the outside observer. Superman was even worse. The Tom Cruise preview with Morgan Freeman is what I'm most interesting in.
There was also a BioShock 3 preview, a video game on the big screen first for me. It was interesting to see the dudes talking about it and all the girlfriends asking wtf.
Previews on launch weekend went for over 30 minutes, so I know I'm missing some, but I don't remember a Harry Potter click flick...
How is that even possible? They turned Les Miserables virtually into an opera in that movie. There is barely a line of plain spoken text in all 150 minutes it lasts.Quote:

Another textbook example of a great movie ruined by horrible advertising. There is a reason this guy topped the DVD sales charts when it came out. Great action movie, a pretty solid storyline, and Dredd was awesome.

Little overboard making even the previews before the movie also black and white, but that does help you adjust so that creative decision doesn't distract to greatly from the movie. For a PG movie its got a lot of scenes that are disturbing or overly frightening that I don't think would have made the PG cut in a color movie. My 3 year old was able to follow along just fine with the movie, so while there is plenty that isn't shown, its done in a way where kids still know what really happens.
But that white girl with the huge eyes...that character was overly distracting. I understand this type of movie puts a lot of emphasis on the visual....but damn.
I think thats the 3rd movie from Tim that included that same male role with dog sidekick idea.
The man loves his dogs, I guess. I never thought of that until you mentioned it. :haha:
Finally got to see The Hunger Game all the way through. Tried to at Christmas, but made the mistake of trying to watch it during the kid's naptime and my mother was over, making loud remarks as to only sick people think up such movies. Only got halfway through before the kid woke. So today I finally was able to sit down and watch it. I think I need to read the book now, since I feel like there were some things left out and left open to interpretation. Not a bad movie, but glad I didn't waste my time in theaters to see it.
I'm glad I'm not the only one irritated by the enormous amount of previews before movies in the theater. I sat through at least 20 min of previews before The Hobbit; I was thinking I might not make it through the movie itself since that was another 2hr45min or so on top of that. Luckily I did, but all of the previews looked like shit I'd only watch if it was on TV and I was bored out of my mind.
You can't get into the theatre during the previews? If I think finding a decent seat won't be a problem I tend to walk in only minutes before the feature starts. My reason for that is that I don't like to see trailers. With too many movies the trailer is pretty much everything that's halfway decent about them and a romcom of which you already know all the funny parts simply is not all that much fun any longer (for example).
Read Hunger Games and saw the movie; think they did a decent enough job turning it into a movie. By and large they capture the book.
Agreed, movie previews suck. I don't understand people (like my sister) who actually LIKE previews, feel it's part of the ticket price, and want to be seated in the theater for 20 minutes of what's basically advertising. :confused:
TCM (Turner Classic Movies) has more "new" movies than any other channel. Their "old" movies are often better than today's crap.
Last weekend I was drawn into a black-and-white movie while channel surfing. There was just 'something' about the characters, the lighting, the dialogue, the intrigue. Turns out it was an early Hitchcock film.
The Conspiracy, about the Wannsee conference, pretty fascinating in its depiction of the banality of the discussion that was to end the lifes of millions of Jews. Surprising to see how few of the participants in it were sentenced to death for their role in the Endlösung der Judenfrage.
Primer. It was all right.
I've been trying for a while to see Silver Linings, Playbook with both my sons, but it's a scheduling nightmare.
It sounds like one of those movies best watched together, then going to a diner for coffee or pancakes afterward, and sitting at a booth....face to face. Maybe even silently.
Don't see it with your sons.
