Not sure about the turnout rates, but Judd secured 72,461 votes. :bored: What baffles me most is how does a convicted person, who has no legal rights to vote, get themselves allowed on a ballot in a primary for the highest elected office when the state's party officials are even uncertain if he's completed all of the formal paperwork?Quote:

First off, WV has a semi-open primary which allows unaffiliated voters to choose (and you can change party affiliation the day of the primary). Secondly, it's obvious you'll get kooks coming out of the woodwork for this kind of thing. If Judd has more than 10% support among actual likely Democratic voters, I'll eat my hat.Quote:

West Virginia actually has hundreds of thousands of "Democrats" who haven't voted Democrat in several decades. There is rarely as much cross-over in semi-open primaries as wiggin assumes, especially in non-consequential races.

WALKER, MI – Sabrena Hall and more than 60 other Kenowa Hills High School seniors are upset that a bike ride to school this morning got them suspended on the last day of school, and banned from the traditional senior walk.
Students say more than 100 classmates participated in a 3-mile bike ride to school that included escorts by a Walker Police cruiser and the mayor. It was supposed to be a fun twist on the types of things that typically happen on senior prank day.
But Principal Katie Pennington was not consulted and not happy about the organized event, suspending 64 of the students for the day. There are about 300 students in Kenowa's senior class.
“She was very upset,” said Hall, 17. “We did not consider this a prank at all, but an opportunity to celebrate our last day at school. We were singing the school fight song (while biking).”
But the principal was not pleased.
“I am glad they made it here safely. It was a safety risk,” said Pennington, who said the bikers caused a major traffic problem and disrupted the school day.
Students traveled from the Walker Fitness and Ice Center, 4151 Remembrance Road NW to the high school, at 3825 Hendershot Ave. NW.
There were reports that teachers and others were late in their commute because of the mass bike ride, and that traffic at one point was backed up more than a mile.
Students said they did call police beforehand to arrange an escort.
Walker Public Safety Director Catherine Garcia-Lindstrom said she was informed that the supervisor on duty was contacted this morning about providing an escort. She said she found out about the escort after the ride.
“There’s not a sidewalk on that entire stretch, so it made prudent sense,” said Garcia-Lindstrom of the escort. “We really didn’t have a lot of notice. I am certainly glad we had one vehicle available.”
Garcia-Lindstrom said there is not another way to get to the school except for riding along Four Mile, so riders would compete with buses. She said the department has a good working relationship with the school.
Pennington said students who were suspended will be allowed to attend commencement. She said she will be discussing with teachers how to address those who missed exams.
Hall and others said in the past there’s been vandalism or other poor behavior on Senior Day.
Several parents gathered at the school, frustrated by the decision to send students home.
Sue Rusch, a parent of participating student, said Pennington overreacted.
“If it was a malicious act, I would support some type of punishment, but this was an organized, safe event,” Rusch said. “I applaud the students.”
Rachel Nicks said she is "100 percent" behind her son, Cody, who is on the National Honor Society and has a 4.33 GPA. She said she was surprised by the principal's hasty decision regarding an "organized, healthy, green activity."
"I have no regrets," said Cody, 17, who like other students says it was not a prank but a celebration.

Obviously they ought to have run i by the principal and staff so there could have been better organization; but, I don't understand why she would suspend the kids for something so...tame. If it was truly a problem the safety department would not have sent an escort. And they didn't bother calling the principal either.
Not to mention that it was the last day of school. Do they honestly try to tell us that there's anything serious of a time-critical nature going on?
I know that our last few days before the summer holidays always consist of fun experiments, movies and games.
Hell, in my last year we had a "Panem et Circenses" prank (it was a Latin School, obviously) which effectively voided anything the teachers had planned for that day ;)

If you worked in a high-rise in NYC, and participated in their mandatory fire and emergency preparedness drills, this isn't anymore wtf than they were. Like in the case of a biological, chemical, or nuclear attack, if we're told to shelter in place, we're to seal the windows and doors, and not leave the building until we're told its safe. If you opt to leave the building, you won't be allowed back in, and if anyone attempts to enter that isn't NYPD, FDNY or other Gov't official, we're to disallow them entry as well.Quote:

It does speak to the life grad students live that someone was working in the lab at that time.
Newest email suggests that not all is well in the building, but whatever the problem is, it's been contained. They still haven't said what the material was.

My best friend's father-in-law died a couple of days ago. He was in his mid 80's and lived a great long life. But this is her/their first experience with a family death...when they're the responsible adults in charge of all the arrangements. The widow wife can't do it on her own, even though they'd made "arrangements" many years ago, as a couple. The families aren't too far away, even though they're in different states.
But death never comes at "convenient" times. It's always sandwiched between graduations, spring breaks, summertime vacations, winter breaks or holiday vacations. A family death can't come at "convenient" times for any student, competitive athlete, or pregnant woman.
I was also thinking of (and getting lost in) divorced couples who remarry, and the many exponential relationships. But then it seemed more like a British sitcom, with John Cleese as the main character.
Okay, once again it was the time for several WTFs regarding the results from the physics and chemistry tests my pupils had to write.
WTF #1:
One guy decided to calculate "4 / 2" with a calculator. He managed to get "1.9" as a result. I subsequently had a serious discussion with my colleagues - to this date we still don't know what he typed into the calculator, what he was thinking or even if he was actually thinking at all. The pupil ain't talking.
WTF #2:
The pupils were to decide whether "The mass of a body is equal to its weight force" was true or not and, if not true, give the reason for choosing false. One pupil's answer: "The mass is not equal to the force because it can be different." Yes, and tautological cat is tautological.
WTF #3:
Did you know that the unit of a velocity is "kg"?
WTF #4:
The pupil writes down Hooke's Law correctly ( "D = F / s") and then proceeds to calculate the result. By using "D = F * s".
WTF # 5:
The reason why we build all those big, huge smelting furnaces? Why, we're in desperate need of slag. (Steel? Who needs steel anyway?)
WTF #6:
The reduction of ferrous oxide with carbon? Won't work unless we add copper. (The pupils did that very same experiment themselves...)
WTF #7:
How to quench a fire of burning magnesium? Simply pour water on it. (Yes, they also did that experiment themselves as well...)
WTF #8:
Another pupil, confronted with the problem of burning magnesium, recognized that using water or CO2 won't work. However, using stuff like "sand" was simply too cheap. He suggested that one should cover the fire with gold granules in order to smother the fire, because gold is a noble metal and thus highly unreactive.
