Of all companies, at least Sony's e-readers are DRM free offerings, and they come in multiple sizes.
Also, Asus announced the Eee Pad, so we will be able to see what a touchpad design like this is truely capable of doing in a free environment.
Kindle also uses "electronic paper". It's a bit different than an LCD —*the screen requires no power to display something, only to change the image on the screen. In other words, each page "sticks" with essentially zero power consumption no power until you "turn" the page. It means the screen is slow (I don't think a Kindle can play videos). But this gives the Kindle significantly more battery life (and readability in different environments) than an iPad or smartphone.

When I visited e-ink company in Boston, they were working on making it work with video, but they had a problem with ghosting back then. E-ink (or e-paper) is perfectly readable in the sun, where LCDs suck. It also has no backlighting, and it's a lot easier on the eyes.Quote:

The one I'm getting for my mom is. Part of my hesitation were these kind of wacky first-generation issues, fortunately this particular one was resolved.

I wouldn't go that far. They are consistently the first products to fall in the yearly pwn2own competition. I think the Macbook lasted 2 minutes last year.
Problem was that there didn't use to be a market for Apple hackers. You never heard of a melissa virus for Apple because your average 4chan script kiddie can infect more Windows machines with a single website than the most rampant Apple virus. Its got nothing to do with skill or being more secure, its simply about volume.
This attack didn't have anything to do with Apple either, this was AT&T acting like AT&T

My brother in law is helping set her up this weekend.
I finally got to set up my mom's thing after she's been using it for a few weeks on her own. A few disappointments:
1) The browser really renders things slow. Sites like GMail, NYTimes, Yahoo Mail, Etc are just slower on the iPad than my iPhone.
2) I underestimated how sucky AT&T could be. Even relative to tMobile.
3) I never thought the lack of multitasking functionality was a big issue on the iPhone, but it's pretty lame. If I go to a page to load in the browser, then go check something in another application, the page doesn't load (or the app doesn't number crunch) while I'm between applications.
My mom seems happy with it (besides the occasional AT&T failure) but I'm even more negative on it than when I made this thread.
I thought they made multitasking available for iPhones and iPads. Is it not there at all, or does it just not work?
If it's there, it's pretty ineffective or hard to notice. But I think they kept their ban on applications using background data.
