Kentucky GOP Outraged Colleges Want Students to Know Things
Kentucky Republicans passed education legislation in 2009 that made it easier to compare the state’s students to other states. Now they’re very upset that the results came back Stupid.
ACT, the state’s testing company, interviews professors to figure out the things most important to student readiness for college, which sounds like a smart thing to do. Unfortunately, those professors have bad news: If you want students to do well in biology classes, they have to know about evolution.
Rather predictably, the Kentucky GOP is madder than a plumber in a Chipotle.
“I think we are very committed to being able to take Kentucky students and put them on a report card beside students across the nation,” said Republican Sen. David Givens. “We’re simply saying to the ACT people we don’t want what is a theory to be taught as a fact in such a way it may damage students’ ability to do critical thinking.”
Yes! Let’s teach students about how Chuck E. Cheese made the Earth out of popsicle sticks three years ago. We don’t want to damage them.
It gets even better. From the Lexington Herald-Leader:
Givens said he asked the ACT representatives about possibly returning to a test personalized for Kentucky, but he was told that option was very expensive and time-consuming.
Aw, come on, Smart People. Is that so unreasonable? All Kentucky wants is national guidelines that exempt the state from knowing science, because the best way to prepare students for college classes is obviously to ignore the advice of the people teaching them. Don’t worry, they have a totally real and responsible argument:
“The theory of evolution is a theory, and essentially the theory of evolution is not science — Darwin made it up,” [Rep. Ben] Waide said. “My objection is they should ensure whatever scientific material is being put forth as a standard should at least stand up to scientific method. Under the most rudimentary, basic scientific examination, the theory of evolution has never stood up to scientific scrutiny.”
See? It’s simple — evolution isn’t real. Not like Jesus! Have you even HEARD of the scientific method, biologists? It’s a little thing where you get evidence for a thing, and continue testing that thing, except in cases where an invisible man made the heavens and the earth, then you have to believe it and definitely teach it as science and DON’T YOU BE ASKING QUESTIONS ABOUT IT, HEATHEN.
What say you, Vincent Cassone, chairman of the University of Kentucky biology department?
“The theory of evolution is the fundamental backbone of all biological research.”
Oh.
“There is more evidence for evolution than there is for the theory of gravity, than the idea that things are made up of atoms, or Einstein’s theory of relativity. It is the finest scientific theory ever devised.”
Wait wait wait. Are you saying… are you saying we have more evidence for evolution than for gravity? ARE YOU SAYING WE DON’T HAVE EVIDENCE FOR GRAVITY?
Somebody get Kentucky on the phone. It’s about to float away. [Lexington Herald-Leader]

That must be a great fan. Besides autographs, he even wants their money!

PRAGUE, Okla.– There’s a bit of diploma drama going on between a local high school and that school’s valedictorian.
David Nootbaar is furious his daughter’s school is keeping her diploma.
He says, “She has worked so hard to stay at the top of her class and this is not right.”
Kaitlin Nootbaar graduated from Prague High School in May and was named valedictorian.
When tasked with writing the graduation speech, her dad says she got her inspiration from the movie “Eclipse: The Twilight Saga.”
Nootbaar says, “Her quote was, when she first started school she wanted to be a nurse, then a veterinarian and now that she was getting closer to graduation people would ask her what do you want to do and she said ‘How the h*** do I know? I’ve changed my mind so many times.”
He says in the written script she gave to the school she said “heck,” but in the moment she said h*** instead.
Nootbaar says the audience laughed, she finished her speech to warm applause and didn’t know there was a problem.
That was until she went to pick up the real certificate this week.
“We went to the office and asked for the diploma and the principal said ‘Your diploma is right here but you’re not getting it. Close the door we have a problem,” says Nootbaar.
He says the principal told Kaitlin she would have to write an apology letter before he would release the diploma.
A move dad believes is illegal.
“She earned that diploma she completed all the state curriculum. In four years she has never made a B. She got straight A’s and had a 4.0 the whole way through.”
Kaitlin starts college in a few days on a full scholarship, making the administrators’ decision even more appalling to her family.
We tried to get the school’s side of the story.
Superintendent Dr. Riick Martin gave us this statement: “This matter is confidential and we can not publicly say anything about it .”
Kaitlin doesn’t plan on writing an apology letter because she doesn’t feel she did anything wrong.
Her family supports that choice.
Best part, the school's mascot is a devil. :o
h***.. is that hell? That's not even bleeped out on teevee is it?
I understand that having some kind of personality disorder is a prerequisite for employment in the US school system. Union rules.
In other WTF news,
Now, would anyone care to hazard a guess as to which letter goes next to this guys name?Quote:

Pakistan disabled girl arrested for blasphemy
Pakistani police have arrested a mentally disabled 11-year-old girl after a mob accused her of desecrating pages of the Koran.
The mob demanded the Christian girl's arrest and threatened to burn down Christian homes outside the capital Islamabad, local media say.
Officials said the girl could not properly answer police questions.
Her parents have been taken into protective custody following threats and other Christian families have fled.
It is thought that the girl has Down's syndrome.
http://espn.go.com/new-york/story/_/...metal-bat-suit Can someone tell me what exactly the bat company did wrong?
if the bat was made outside of the regulations that the little league had in place, and the store sold the bat based on that performance... I can see them getting in trouble.
The article says the details are sealed though so
How is the bat company meant to know what its bats are used for? Furthermore, no one complained about the bats before this incident. As sad as this situation is, pitchers getting hit by batted balls is part of the game.
Marketing. Which is one of the few ways the sports chain could have been dragged into this. Bats of this size and caliber are, more often than not, marketed directly towards and for youth baseball leaques.
You don't have any information for how long this exact bat, or this model of bat, was in play. And doesn't it usually take something going wrong before an illegal bat in the big leagues is discovered?Quote:
Furthermore, no one complained about the bats before this incident.
Calculated risk, maybe the parents thought a wooden bat wouldn't be strong enough to almost kill their son, without considering that this metal bat would enter play or that the metal bats performed differently.Quote:
As sad as this situation is, pitchers getting hit by batted balls is part of the game.
Further research on the case shows the base of the lawsuit revolved around the bat missing the warning labels about it being superior than the wooden bats.
Anyone with the slightest knowledge of baseball (which presumably some people in a little league have) would know that.
I can't say the same for most parents from my little league days. Most of the time it's something the kids talked their parents into, no different than scouts or guitar lessons. Especially at this jv age. Besides, some is not all, much less this set of parents.
Have we forgotten that most people are stupid as well? Hence the need for labels on EVERYTHING
Police: All Empire State shooting victims were wounded by officers America, FUCK YEAH!
Better yet, they were shooting from 8 feet away, and managed to miss him with 8 out of their 15 bullets.
I just got introduced to the world of English language Jewish rock. :bulb:
Do you need a hug?
It's not actually that bad, just... well, you know. English language Jewish folk music was bad enough. Rock music?
I am guessing the closest experience I can have is rap music in Finnish
I'll see your Finnish rap and raise you this:
I was going to complain that this is an unfair competition since you don't (to my knowledge) speak Finnish, but I couldn't make out most of the lyrics there, so
You weren't missing anything (sorry about the video quality but I guess that's what you get from Jewish filmmakers :p ). They were singing about how the words of Torah should be 'sweet as honey' to them, based on a very old tradition involving honey and education. You didn't miss something of importance.
I missed the ability to critique them, for better or worse! Which is all that counts for this conversation.
How do honey and education mix? That sounds kinky.
