Just saw it on HD.

Hadn't heard of it before I saw it was listed tonight.

Pretty good. Enjoyable and not quite what I was expecting.

A little way in I thought I was in for a 2001 clone, with a similar story to HAL going nuts. But pleasantly surprised to find the talking computer, Gerty, wasn't at all insidious.

on a sidenote, i'm seriously starting to wonder if the trend of generic movie titles is some sort of antipiracy measure. You ever tried searching through a database for words like moon, or nine?

Saw this a couple months ago.

It was ok. It wasn't what I was expecting, but it didn't leave much of an impression, either.

Just saw it on Netflix streaming. Very nice. Good to see some scifi that isn't stupid monsters or guns blazing. A pleasant change. :up:

Finally got to watch it. Not going to bother with spoilers at this point. I enjoyed the movie. It took some unexepected turns at some points, and some of it didn't fit with the plot but I enjoyed it.
I was half expecting it to be a horror film of a lonely dude going crazy when that girl in yellow kept popping up. Caught that something wasn't right after the crash cause he was in to great a condition, but I assumed he had been out for so long he missed his trip back. Not that he was a clone, and whole shit, I wasn't expecting the clone angle.

Got a few questions. The machine knew what was going on. The machine knew the clones were figuring it out. Why did the machine only help at some points? He hid the discovery of the first clone, he coughed up the password to the database of past clones, and he knew how to get a live feed, but he didn't show that to the clones.
The live feed back home, was that the original Sam Bells voice in the background?
Why 3-4 of the jamming stations if it only took knocking down 1 to get a live feed back?

Did the movie cover why the clones were "expiring"? Was it a flaw in the process, or a danger from working on the moon?

The jamming stations: they each provided proximity jamming. Needed 4 for full coverage, dropping one opened a hole.

The expiring clones: I thought it was by design, or at least a flaw in the cloning process nobody cared to correct. They cloned the memories of the original Sam (and I thought it was the original's voice in the background of the live feed), and the original sam only expected to be on site for a certain amount of time, so that was all they could keep a clone around for. They serve no purpose past that point.

Why did I not think of the proximity jamming :bulb:, I should have caught that with all the scenes they did with the rover thing saying signal fail.

The memories of Original Sam expecting only 3 years makes sense, wonder if I was reaching in thinking all the clones were showing signs of failing towards the end of their contract. At one point I was suspecting the 3 years time frame was also a lie, with the one clone only admitting to carving 2 buildings in that time and so many backup clones in that hidden room, but the robot admitted no new clone till the 3 years is up, and at one point they showed the new clone starting at the beginning of the wife's video messages (possible break up). I would assume to go from breakup, to back together, to see you soon, would take a while to evolve.

From what I recall, 3 years is as long as a clone lasts before expiring. The cloned genes simply aren't of high enough quality to ensure a full human lifespan.

The one thing that didn't make sense to me was the massive corridor of clones. If you assume he's 39, three year "deployment", that's 13 clones (assuming they're actually grown and not created fully grown) that you'd need on backorder. Even with triple redundancy that's only 39 clones, but it looked like there were hundreds. Doesn't seem that energy efficient, and it looked like it would require a ton of maintenance (by Gerty I'm assuming?) Having it be a storage bay that has to be restocked by Earth wouldn't make sense either as it seemed like the replacement process was fully automated, so why wouldn't the clone growing process be as well?

...don't stress out too much about the why's and wherefores and just be grateful that it was an enjoyable experience that made you actually "think".

Rather than some big budget bullshit blockbuster battering your senses with bloated and belligerent attempts to amaze you with brilliant special effects while making some inane and pointless attempt at something resembling a "plot".

If you're assuming the character is 39, and each clone has a three year deployment, and the facility is growing its own clones instead of keeping fully grown ones in a storage bay, 39/3 = 13 clones it would need to be growing to make sure it had a fully grown one every 3 years. Multiply that by 3 so that each clone has some redundancy and you still wouldn't need a massive storage facility that introduces a great deal more potential points of failure into the system. And I'm still wondering how maintenance gets performed on that area of the station.

But they could have been running that base with clones for 100 years. The character is always 39 because that's the age his clone is designed to mature to. The 39 has nothing to do with the actual number of years the base has been active or the clones have been put into operation.

Oh, you're assuming it takes 39 years to get the clone to the right age. Well, I assumed they grew it to adulthood a lot faster than that. If you're going to give them the technology to grow a clone with the adult source material's memories intact, why not give them the technology to grow the clone directly to the source material's age? In any case, I assumed they grew them on Earth and shipped them up to the moon during construction, which is why they had to warehouse them.

Well my main problem was that you obviously can't let him see the clone storage area, so how does maintenance get performed on it? Just kinda bugged me is all.

The movie's a vehicle to examine identity, self determination, freedom, etc in a way that can't be done in ordinary circumstances. The scenario is obviously not workable, however. The technology to clone a fully grown human being with memories intact? You could make the whole base automated with the technology needed to do that. And taking into account the maintenance in the storage facility - its either built so good its maintenance free OR the maintenance is automated. Now, either case undermines the entire reason to have a human or clone at the base at all. Why isn't the whole base built that good? Why isn't everything maintained automatically? But you shouldn't look that deeply at the story - maintenance is not what its about. Yes, the writer should have come up with a different setting to discuss whatever he's discussing, but this is what you have. Pay attention to the concepts the writer was trying to explore.

Perhaps the reason they used clones is that the exposure to radiation on the moon would eventually kill any human living there for an extended time.

The symptoms exhibited by the degraded clone looked remarkably similar to the symptoms of exposure to elevated radiation levels.

So rather than deliberately put an actual human in a fatal situation, instead you simply use clones and negate the moral obligations required for dealing with 'actual' human employees.

I'm a bit unhinged from humanity so I'm unable to analyze films that way. I don't understand people.
