The deportations are being opposed because many believe that deporting them back to Afghanistan violates the non-refoulement principle in addition to subjecting them to a high risk of death for other reasons. The deportations are being carried out for political reasons--govt. feels it needs to appear tough on asylum seekers in order to retain control in the upcoming election, which is of course foolish because playing the fascists' game only strengthens fascists. Because of the reasonable belief that these deportations are in breach of human rights laws and subject people to a high risk of torture and death, some have sought to obstruct the execution of this policy in any way possible. From this perspective, a flight being delayed is a small price to pay to help save a life. If there are more protests, it's possible that airlines will cease to cooperate with the govt. in carrying out these deportations.
