Default What Does Getting Older mean?

This one's for lolli, munchkin, cat, and me. (Any other women here not mentioned?)

Men don't seem to feel time's truths as fast as women. Men can get beer bellies, begin to go scalp bald, grow hair out of their ears or nostrils..... and still claim they feel "attractive" to women.

Indeed, many young women are attracted to older or ageing gentlemen. Many mature men are drawn to younger women. Why do women have a harder time, as we grow older? Casino waitresses being asked to don skimpy flapper style costumes, being fired for being "mature". Women thinking breast implants or face lifts are the trick? What the hell is that all about?

Has anyone else seen the movie Harold and Maude?

Supposition: regardless of how "advanced societies" view success by gender, education or income.....women still have more to "prove" than men. (Scandinavian nations are the smallest percentage, but a nice model to follow and strive toward.)

Anecdote: my ex used to talk about welcoming grey hair at his temples, as if that was a sign of wisdom and experience others could appreciate. Perhaps. I didn't push it, but said good ideas are good ideas no matter the age of the creator. He preferred to think his ideas would be appreciated by forward looking progressives, but wouldn't be accepted unless they came from a wise and greying professor type.

Needless to say, we didn't agree.

Should I change thread title to connect Ageing with Maturity?

    You should let men reply.

How am I preventing men from replying?

Edit: Besides, this forum is predominantly males. If they have an opinion it wouldn't be females stifling them from posting, now would it? How long should we wait for guys to post about what getting older means to them?

    This.

I think men are just more superficial about what attracts us.
It's not that the older man is more attractive, but that the woman is more likely to give less weight to less important traits like physical appearence.

Like my wife worries what I eat.
I care if it tastes good, she cares if it IS good (health-wise).
To be honest, it reflects badly on men more than anything.

I don't get what you're saying. You don't know what getting older means, unless your wife tells you?

gurggh maybe I do understand. It's all about the messenger?

Edit: Don't tell me what to eat (or do)! Don't act like my mother! That's funny, because my ex used to tell me something similar when our kids were very young. Conventional wisdom would say it's the mother/wife who can't change roles. But I disagree. I used to plead to be treated as a spouse by my husband, and not just "another mother figure", but he didn't understand.

What's even more confounding is that he's with a woman who treats him like a mother. Strict diets, strict social schedules. She even buys Himalayan sea salt, because it's pink and has Karma? WTF? She can "sell" this kind of crap to this guy, but he doesn't grasp the concept of a Father showing up at his son's concerts or games?

Pink Himalayan Salt. Very Important. Think about that. Cooking foods on a $6,000 dollar AGA range, also very important. Special pies with rhubarb or cabbage. Serving a South Beach diet to a growing 15 year old athlete, that's especially important?

Uh, let's see, men want young (looking) women because they're healthy and able to successfully bare children, and women want men who will be able to provide for and protect them and their offspring?
The light that once I thought compassion still casting shadows in your action
The words you shared were cold transactions that bring me to curse what you've done
When you're up there absorbed in greatness with such success you've grown complacent
I hope you scorch your many faces when you fly too close to the sun

In the future, the Berlin wall will be a mile high, and made of steel. You too will be made to crawl, to lick children's blood from jackboots. There will be no creativity, only productivity. Instead of love there will be fear and distrust, instead of surrender there will be submission. Contact will be replaced with isolation, and joy with shame. Hope will cease to exist as a concept. The Earth will be covered with steel and concrete. There will be an electronic policeman in every head. Your children will be born in chains, live only to serve, and die in anguish and ignorance.
The universe we observe has precisely the properties we should expect if there is, at bottom, no design, no purpose, no evil, no good, nothing but blind, pitiless indifference.

Women have larger tits so men could enjoy the sexy, sexy visage of the buttocks while having sex in the position more favourable to our newly developed upright bodies, y/n

Unfortunately, this is true! Women do want someone who is able to provide a good life. I don't know why some women don't realize that living on their own, without a man, isn't all bad. I know, I'm not really in a position to comment on this, but oh well! Most men want to procreate and a younger woman is usually a sign she can still have kids. Men also seem to enjoy having "eye candy" on their arm, so they can appear more virile than they might actually be.

I do wonder what will happen when K gets to school age though. I'll be 35 then, and I'm sure will be older than many of the other kids' moms. But maybe not, there does seem to be a good mix of ages of women at the park with babies....Sigh.
Cat, don't worry about it! You are far from old, or even older, yet. When The Kid started school, I was just about the youngest mom in the group. I was 29! Now, I look at him and his friends, and I think...there is NO FUCKING WAY they can be this old, simply because there is NO FUCKING WAY I am this old!

One thing I think is, women try to look younger for their man because that's the way we were taught. We are supposed to look our best all the time. Of course, a man with gray hair is distinguished while a woman with gray hair is old or not taking care of herself! Damned double standard! Of course, we women do tend to notice all of our flaws, where a man might not even see them.

I am dating a man 25 years older than myself. The age difference isn't so much, but the generational attitude is sure different. He wants me to "dress" and "wear makeup" and wear "dress shoes", etc. when we are just going to Casper to the mall! My generation feels new jeans and a nice sweater is dressed up, he thinks that is what you clean the house in!

I guarantee you I am not growing old gracefully, I am kicking and screaming my way along!
I don't have a problem with authority....I just don't like being told what to do!Remember, the toes you step on today may be attached to the ass you have to kiss tomorrow!RIP Fluffy! 01-07-09 I'm so sorry Fluffster! People who don't like cats were probably mice in an earlier life! My mind not only wanders, sometimes it leaves completely! The nice part about living in a small town: When you don't know what you're doing, someone else always does!

WTF? Since when do you wear makeup and dress shoes? Are you dating this guy because he makes you feel younger, or because he buys you stuff at the mall?

OMG, do you really think I live in my jeans or sweats? I do know how to dress up, and actually own the clothes to do it! I remember a time, in the not too distant past, that I never left the house without my makeup on! Who says I can't put some on from time to time to make my friend happy? Also, I am dating him because I like him. Isn't that why you are supposed to date someone?

I can't be bothered to find the "correct" thread just now. Maybe I'm just too damned old.

I remember what Lifebuoy soap smells like, but I can't describe it. I can remember my grandma smelled like soap and powder, but I can't tell you which ones (but it wasn't Lifebuoy). Maybe more like White Shoulders powder, Almay lipstick, or Dove bar soap.....things that today "smell pink". When I was very little she gave me some Avon products. They smelled so nice. No, it wasn't the Tinkerbell line. To this day, when I buy a lipstick, I want to smell it first. Her pillows also had a scent, but it wasn't Downy, Fabreze, or mothballs. Down or feather pillows just have their own scent. Nothing like synthetic foams. But then, she also ironed all her linens, spritzing them and sometimes adding starch.

Wish I could compress the scents of my grandma.
