Default Another Reason the Middle East is Terrible

    http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/arti...lice-cell.html

    *****
A British tourist was beaten to death by officers in a Dubai police station after being arrested for swearing, it was claimed yesterday.

Lee Bradley Brown, 39, was on holiday at a £1,000-a-night hotel in the Arab state when he was thrown into a filthy cell.

Police sources say he was ‘badly beaten up’ by a group of police officers, leaving him unconscious on the floor.

Inmates told how they watched officers bundle him into a body-bag and drag him out of the building.

During Mr Brown’s six days in Bur Dubai police station, guards refused to give him enough food and water and did not let him see a lawyer, it is alleged.

His sister learned about the attack when she received a phone call from an inmate on Sunday, claiming her brother had been beaten.

The prisoner found her phone number on a photocopy of her brother’s passport which had been left behind in the cell.

She contacted the British Embassy in Dubai, and on Monday an official was sent to visit Mr Brown at the police station.

But the official was turned away by an officer who claimed Mr Brown did not want to see him and had ‘declined consular assistance’.

His sister, who did not want to be named, received another phone call from the inmate saying he had seen her brother’s body being taken out in a body-bag.

A source told the Daily Mail last night: ‘He suffered a really bad beating which must have caused some terrible internal injuries.

‘The poor bloke stood no chance at all. At one stage he was thrown against the concrete wall of a cell and landed badly.

‘Then the guards tried to hush it up and pretend nothing had happened.’

The place is a shit hole. They want to make this a tourist destination? Piece of advice for everyone, everywhere. Don't ever travel to the middle east outside of Israel. The culture there is pathetic. Their system of laws is almost non-existent. In some ways its even worse then South Africa the rape capital of the world.

Well, yeah, you have to be pretty dumb to go to Dubai for a vacation. Most fun activities are either illegal or frowned upon by the locals.

That's f'ing disgusting. I don't care how many skyscrapers they build, they're still going to retain to their primitive ways. It's like trying to civilise a chimpanzee, it's just not going to happen.

I'd never want to visit a Middle Eastern country. If I want to go back several centuries I'll open up a history book. They should be thankful to the Western world for making their world possible, yet they treat Western tourists like filth.

And what's worse is that the locals can report you and their claim has more weight. I can't believe my sister and her friend nearly went there.

Better Half, who loves watching the Amazing ace, keeps thinking that it would be great to visit...

Then I have to repeatedly point out that I'm not going to jail for being gay, or any other silly reason over there.

Funny thing is that you'd have to be fucking in public to make that particular quarter drop.

What about hand holding or some such? Or worse...kissing?

I'm just paranoid enough to think that is some bellhop or other staffer walked by our room and just figured that we were boinking...that the policia would arrive.

Arbitrary police states are arbitrary. A good reason not to visit Russia unless you know your way around, too.

Holding hands between people of the same gender is entirely acceptable. Kissing that doesn't involve the exchange of bodily fluids is too. And one of the rules that applies to all of the middle east is 'don't ask, don't tell'. What you do in the privacy of your hotelroom is private.

Not really worth a new thread, but that Italian do-gooder is a point in case; the people who are on the same wave length as AQ don't like anybody, no matter how 'arab-friendly' they are.
    Congratulations America

It could be worse. Two bachelors, covertly traveling the countryside, alone, hiding from ever watchful eyes. Singing songs to pass the time, camping together. Wearing a ring on a chain around their neck, hidden, because if they put it on they'll just end up getting caught. Eventually a bunch of other guys with similar interests join them. They like singing songs and camping too. That and hiking, lots of hiking through the countryside. They're a bit more rugged though, they don't hide when they hear black speech. Yet they are still persecuted for being who they are, and what they do. In fact people are trying to kill them all the time. Isn't that awful?

There are no facts yet about this case Lewk. Thus far, it is all hearsay.

And when was the last time you visited the Emirates?

Or do you base everything on the rumour-driven drivel you read in the Daily Fail?

Are you saying the guy isn't dead? Are you denying he was arrested? Are you denying what the other inmates said? There are plenty of facts here.

And of course I haven't visited the Emirates. Most people prefer not to visit countries that jail and murder tourists.

"Arbitrary police states are arbitrary. A good reason not to visit Russia unless you know your way around, too."
This comment is based on what exactly? Experience? Or are you just talking out of your ass? Only good reson not to visit Russia is a fairly annoying visa procedure but hey its a good reason not visit US as well.

Now concerning DUBAI I have been there recently on business trip and coming back for vacation next new year holidays. You do not get arrested for swearing, holding hands, kissing, etc. this is all made up bullshit. I saw plenty of woman in quite short skirts and showing flesh. I do not know whether the story about the brit is true and what he did to manage to get himself arrested. Only thing that was pointed out to me is that drinking alcohol outside of specifically designated places (read outside of hotel / restaurant territory) is illegal and you could be fined if caught. I think as vacation are it is simply incredible you get the impression that you have moved in to the future, it would be difficult to describe but it’s really a place built for tourists and built to be the biggest and the best. I mean the guys built a ski slope in the middle of the freaking desert.

One would think that a death of British citizen arrested for swearing would cause quite a stir in the media and I have not heard anything until reading the post here. Dubai does not have oil it relies on its tourist business and real estate investment, I am pretty sure any police officers jeopardizing that would be hung by the balls.
It is apparently fairly close to another emirate where the laws are much, much stricter so if you choose to rent a car and wear shorts need to be careful that you do not cross in to what is for all purposes another country.

Hmm you do realize that the region was more advanced sientifically and culturally at least several nations in the region were, until western civilization came bearing gifts, I think they would come in wanting to give away swords or something and came charging in with cries "Caelum denique!" (Latin, "Heaven at last and "Deus vult" (Latin, "God wills it") all a misunderstanding really (Happens all the time because god is too lazy to communicate clearly). Afterward various great powers mainly US, Britain have done their best to keep the nations in the region weak, in fact repeatedly redrawing the borders of nations in the region. So yes I totally agree with you that they owe their current level of civilization to the west but I think their way of expressing gratitude is entirely appropriate..

This is one of the dumbest threads and I'm not surprised to see Lewk and Draco on center stage putting their racism and their stupidity on display. One of you lives in a first world country that executes people, has imprisoned a significant portion of its population for financial gain, is renown for high levels of violent crime, has a reputation among first world countries for police who abuse their power, who beat and tase and harrass people without cause, a country that can't care for its sick and poor, a country full of people who believe evolution is an evil lie spread by atheist terrorists to suppress the truth of the 6000-year-old world, a country that can't do away with spanking children, a country that hands over suspects to other countries to be tortured, a country that mistreats prisoners who've never even been tried, humiliating them for poops and giggles, a country that doesn't let homosexuals get married, a country that starts wars all over the place against countries that its citizens can't even find on a map, a country characterised by disgusting excesses more than by anything else, where the larger you live, the more extravagant, the more wasteful, the better you are, where money buys everything, feel free to add to this potentially endless list

But yeah, Dubai sucks, it's those goddamned Middle Eastern "chimpanzees" (how fucking vile are you you little brat? You're approaching Slavic levels of racism. Most of your thoughts belong in a time centuries past, if only you would open up a history book) that we should hold in contempt. You goddamned idiots

    Read some history.
The light that once I thought compassion still casting shadows in your action
The words you shared were cold transactions that bring me to curse what you've done
When you're up there absorbed in greatness with such success you've grown complacent
I hope you scorch your many faces when you fly too close to the sun

I actually don't read all that much history, but I do at least know when the crusades were and when the European colonisation of the Middle East took place.

This is not personal against you but my heckles really go up when people start blaming all the ills of the Middle East on that decade or so of 'European colonisation' of some parts of the area.

If there was any truth to that nonsense, a little bit further to the east people would be living in caves, trying to figure out how to make a wheel.
    Congratulations America

And if based on my experiences I'd make the same kind of statement? You'd accuse me of racism?
In the future, the Berlin wall will be a mile high, and made of steel. You too will be made to crawl, to lick children's blood from jackboots. There will be no creativity, only productivity. Instead of love there will be fear and distrust, instead of surrender there will be submission. Contact will be replaced with isolation, and joy with shame. Hope will cease to exist as a concept. The Earth will be covered with steel and concrete. There will be an electronic policeman in every head. Your children will be born in chains, live only to serve, and die in anguish and ignorance.

He said she said. And you call them facts.

There are plenty of facts here.
    Are there. Are there really.

Like the 'fact' that the tourist tried to hurl a maid out of a sixth-storey window, while high on cannabis?

The 'fact' that he choked on his own vomit while in police custody which lead to his death?

That he didn't have a bruise on his body when he died?

Y'see Lewk, this is what people with more than two brain cells to rub together call hearsay, rumour, allegations and counter-allegations. In other words the half-truths and gossip from conflicting sources that you typically read in a newspaper.

Didn't really expect you to put forth a considered and balanced opinion though ... I mean ...

Most people prefer not to visit countries that jail and murder tourists.

That's like saying people wouldn't visit the US because they murder innocent people.

Yet most people are intelligent enough to know that the US is a country of many people and uncountable layers of complexity, with both ugliness and beauty, rights and wrongs, risks and danger.

And you haven't even been to the UAE to make up your own mind about the country before spewing forth your bigoted drivel.

So killing innocent tourists, or hijacking planes and flying them into buildings is entirely appropriate? Or were you just talking about the overall sentiment of the people?
And if they were more advanced scientifically and what not, then they would have been the ones who brought about the industrial revolution, autmobiles, computers, medicine etc etc.
