    Default Please help me choose between crappy graphics cards for an ubuntu system :o

    So, I'm thinking of buying a silent low-profile graphics card for my PC. One of the following:

    (from cheapest to most expensive)

    GIGABYTE GEFORCE GT 210 1GB DDR3 PCI-E VGA/DVI/HDMI LP SILENT

    ASUS RADEON HD5450 512MB DDR3 PCI-E VGA/DVI/HDMI SILENT LP

    SAPPHIRE RADEON HD5450 512MB DDR3 PCI-E VGA/DVI/HDMI SILENT LP


    I'm inclined to buy the second card, but I'm not sure just how much of a nightmare it might be in the latest Ubuntu. If it's too much of a hassle, maybe the first one would be more worthwhile!

    Any thoughts?

    The performance between the 2 is the same, and the 210 doesn't (or didn't) support physx like the larger cards do, and the memory size doesn't mean shit at this price point, so...

    it really comes down to driver support I would say, and with Ubuntu, I'm in the dark.

    I just bought Brent a low profile silent HIS 6570, because we needed an HDMI port so his computer would connect to his new TV. I'm having an issue with the text not being as crisp as my monitor, or his old setup, but I can't tell if its the card, the TV, or what.

    It is indeed the driver support I can't get a clear picture of. I have no philosophical opposition to the proprietary ATI drivers, but some say they work all right while others say they are shit, and it's seemingly impossible to find out how they compare to each other.

    Take the nVidia card. Their drivers are way better than the ATI ones and always have been. Even if they're only binary blobs (which angers some FOSS zealots).

    I only play around with Ubuntu a little, and it was a severe pain in the arse to get my ATI drivers to work. Once they were working though, they seemed to work better then they did with Windows on my dual boot laptop.

    But I was literally down for 3 days while I tried to get the drivers to work.

    I've setup several Linux systems and I've also worked with several different distributions, trust me: nVidia is far more painless than ATI.

    Linux is about the only thing I wouldn't recommend an AMD card for.
    Tomorrow is like an empty canvas that extends endlessly, what should I sketch on it?
