So Google has turned from a search engine, into a company that develops gimmick products?

Grocery ordering refrigerators and plates that update Twitter aren't gimmick projects?

Google hasn't been a "search engine" in a long time.

A fridge that keeps a shopping list would be amazing. and the plate that can recognize food has all kinds of positive benefits.

Perhaps, but think instead about the technology underlying those gimmicks.

The vast majority of Google's revenue comes from ads...

That's true but I never really thought Google would venture outside of the internet. Although if there is I'm obviously not aware of them, but I don't think I've ever seen non-internet related projects from Google.

True. It seems like those products would be rather inefficient though. If a person were to have a spontaneous grocery list, this refrigerator wouldn't do them much good unless it was programmed to order specific items. And even then it would be cheaper to do so on a computer.

It's still about using the internet (or at least doing things that would not be possible without the internet), just with other machines than your computer. Mind you, they also created android.
