"One day, we shall die. All the other days, we shall live."
Ceramics are insulators, so you'd best be investing in good fans, foo!
In the future, the Berlin wall will be a mile high, and made of steel. You too will be made to crawl, to lick children's blood from jackboots. There will be no creativity, only productivity. Instead of love there will be fear and distrust, instead of surrender there will be submission. Contact will be replaced with isolation, and joy with shame. Hope will cease to exist as a concept. The Earth will be covered with steel and concrete. There will be an electronic policeman in every head. Your children will be born in chains, live only to serve, and die in anguish and ignorance.
The universe we observe has precisely the properties we should expect if there is, at bottom, no design, no purpose, no evil, no good, nothing but blind, pitiless indifference.
Why would you get a heavy computer case?
Or is this for a desktop tower and not a laptop?
WTF you talking about? A ceramic laptop?
I suspect Aimless got distracted by something clean and sleek like one of these
Ceramics are showing up with a few motherboards and high end cases, they are a great way to remove heat buildup from the underside of the motherboard using the usually overlooked frame of the case.
That still does not explain how the ceramic magically switches from heat insulating to heat transporting. Ceramics' heat conductance range from about 1 to 40 W/(m·K). And 40 is quite high, most of the stuff is in the single digits. Most metals begin at 40 W/(m·K), Silver would be the best metal (429 W/(m·K)), better would be Diamond (2300 W/(m·K)) and the absolute top would be Carbon Nano Tubes (6000 W/(m·K))
This also explains why water (0.5562 W/(m·K) @ 273.15 K) is more effective at cooling a PC than air (0.0262 W/(m·K)).
With this in mind, I don't exactly see the appeal of Ceramics for cooling purposes.

I don't understand it either, but I'm inclined to think that there's some advantage to giving a motherboard a ceramic backplate just as there may some point to having ceramic powder in thermal paste compounds, and I'm just trying to figure it out. I'm also trying to understand what all this talk of heat dissipation is about.
I just happened to think about this and when I googled the first thing I found was that site with the slick porcelain cases, but they seem to be regular porcelain... I was curious about how they might work, though.
Can insulation in a computer case be a good thing eg. increase the amount of heat transferred by the fans by ensuring that it all goes the right way rather than dissipating out into the entire case??
Those backplates apparently use "micro-porous" ceramics (as do the ceramic heatsinks on eg. the Asus board). I can't find a single explanation of how the things are supposed to work.
"One day, we shall die. All the other days, we shall live."
Well, the thermal paste explanation is easy: It's better than the air pockets you'd get without the paste. And it's dirt cheap.
And micro-porous ceramics? Beats me. Usually that stuff is used as a filter

I believe the idea is to increase the surface area for cooling. I'm uncertain why they use ceramic, though.
But since they want to use it as a heat conductor to a metal plate, increasing the surface area doesn't make a whole lot of sense. And air is a really shitty heat conductor.

Air's a half-decent insulator, that's why colder places have windows with multiple panes and empty air in between!
