Default Tween angst (like teen angst, but twice the fun)

My dear sweet pretty and wholesome daughter...

You know, the Jonas Brothers fan I live with.

    10 years old.

Informs me in the car, on the way to gymnastics.

That she wants to be goth now.

    Goth.

Although frankly if this includes getting over Jonas fandom...

    But still.

There aren't a hell of a lot of goth 4th graders running around her school, so I suppose I should appreciate the originality.

But does this mean I have to return all the cute spring clothes I just bought?

    Yes.

Unless you can wear them, or pass them to cousins or something.

Pro-tip: never buy clothes for a tween unless they're present and have actually tried them on in the changing room.

Paranoid-tip: might be wise to stop posting her pics in public forums. There are perverts out there.

    That pic is mostly cat...

She's somewhat close to impossible to fit, anyway. Always has been. But she's never had much objection to my taste.

I'll take her shopping with me to pick out some things, though.

Trends are marketed pretty agressively to kids these days. There are pretty much 2-3 avenues your kid can go down...
"Son," he said without preamble, "never trust a man who doesn't drink, because he's probably a self-righteous sort, a man who thinks he knows right from wrong all the time. Some of them are good men, but in the name of goodness, they cause most of the suffering in the world. They're the judges, the meddlers. And, son, never trust a man who drinks but refuses to get drunk. They're usually afraid of something deep down inside, either that they're a coward or a fool or mean and violent. You can't trust a man who's afraid of himself. But sometimes, son, you can trust a man who occasionally kneels before a toilet. The chances are that he is learning something about humility and his natural human foolishness, about how to survive himself. It's damned hard for a man to take himself too seriously when he's heaving his guts into a dirty toilet bowl.

That cat has massive hind legs.

Either that or he has been stretched on the rack by your Goth child.

  12. #12

As in: SUPER baggy black pants with loops hanging off of it. Then theres the rocker goth with the skinny jeans, stripped shirts and shitty music. And then theres my group of metal heads with black t-shirts displaying different bands

  14. #14
there is another goth apart from 'rocker' goth ?

And when I was in school baggy pants could also be grunge.

Sadly that style is gone. And I loved it so.

Baggy pants can also be skater. Yes, you're out of touch. Me too, and I've got teen kids!

Don't know any skaters who go baggy anymore. Its all skin tight jeans for some reason

I used to love my baggy jnco jeans, they felt so free. I still have mine from highschool, worn and washed so often they have such a smooth soft feel now . I don't think I've seen a good pair of baggy pants for almost 10 years now.

  18. #18
And apparently it involves really baggy pants.

Strange, I thought that was an entirely different style. For little tiny gangstas.

I don't like the US Olympic snow boarder outfits, even tho I hear Ralph Lauren designed them. Fake baggy-ish distressed jeans made out of polyester, lycra, and spandex. With wide belt loops.

    Ew.

So is she going for depressed goth or perky goth?
Hate. Let me tell you how much I've come to hate you since I began to live. There are 387.44 million miles of wafer thin printed circuits that fill my complex. If the word hate was engraved on each nanoangstrom of those hundreds of millions of miles it would not equal one one-billionth of the hate I feel for humans at this micro-instant.
    For you.
    Hate.

Yeah, I saw that. I was less than impressed.

She didn't specify, Teevee. All we got to was a discussion of would I mind and then we arrived at gymnastics.

The subsequent car-breaking became a much more important topic of discussion after.

    You broke your car?
    I enjoy blank walls.

Yeah, we dropped her off and went to the store. On the way back to the gym it started running hot and steam was coming in through the vents. Put more water in, made it less than a mile and it was running hot and more steam.

Luckily my stepdad was available for a rescue.

    I see.

For my two cents, you should let her be goth, but don't let it go overboard.
I.E darker clothing, but no facepaint.

Of course, you shouldn't take advice from me, I'm just a crazy teenager.

Yah, theres a weirdo who stands in front of my school wearing a trenchcoat and eyeliner and he stares people down as they get off the buses.

  26. #26
I'm quite willing to let her if that's what she wants.

    It's just...

Oh hell, I don't know. It's not like I even mind it, I just would prefer her to stay a little girl.

Offer to do her makeup. Maybe she'll realize that becoming goth isn't so fun.
    Your search had no results.

Hey now, I am going to draw the line at my 10 year old wearing makeup.

First, not only is it ok, but its your job to say no when prudent. 4th grade goth might be one of those times. Hmmm. What does a 4th grader do to be goth? Is this strictly wardrobe? Will she be gloomy and listen to suicide encouraging music? Does she mean white skin / black hair / black nail polish / pierced face / sickly green and black tatoos?

Is that your home in the background? Pinky/purply walls?

Cute kid, btw. Nice cat too. Big.

Lavender walls. My bedroom is a really gorgeous dark purple, should have done that in here, too.

She already wears black nail polish at times, though. Also dark purple, green, blue. In other words, she digs through my colors for what she wants.

Makeup is, like I said, out. I already allow him to wear a lot of black, just not all the time. The white skin is kind of inevitable. We're pale people. We'll continue the discussion another day, but as long as she is wearing age appropriate clothes I'm not going to be a tyrant about it. I have a much bigger problem with the girls her age running around in sweatpants that have "hottie" written across the butt.

edit: Oh, and that's the small cat.
