PS4 vs Xbox One
Surprised nobodies done a thread about this yet. Don't think there's any Fanboi's here, not looking for that, but has/is anyone getting a new console and if so which and why? Or if you had the pennies to buy one, which would you think is better and why?

Otherwise, it really comes down to personal preference. They both do the same thing but in different ways. People who like to predict things claim the PS4 will come out on top, but hey, who knows. I think a lot of stuff concerning the Xbox environment could change greatly depending on their next CEO, and Sony is banking a good deal more on independents.
If Forza 5's microtransactions are any hint of things to come, I'll have no interest in the Xbox One

I might upgrade my spare desktop into a steam box, but not buy one, and definitely not one of the other consoles. Too much money for gaming for me, at least with the steam box I'd already have a bunch of games, while for console I'd need to buy (expensive) games..
Xbox one release here is 'somewhere' in 2014 with rumours about Q3..Apparently, translating stuff for the kinect is hard. PS4 is already out. I would predict that for the immediate future, PS4 will be far more popular here.

Conveniently for me both of my kids still prefer the Wii U, and have scarcely even played the 360. I might grab a PS3 if they quit trying to sell them for so much and drop them to $125-$150.

What's a steambox?
A dedicated machine for playing steam games on the TV with a controller.
On the OP: I've only got the XBox One, but a friend of mine who has both says that he's more excited about the XBox. He says that the PS4 is just the same as the last generation, but with slightly nicer graphics that he doesn't really notice. He's more interested in the capabilities of the Kinect now that it's being properly supported, and the potential of cloud processing with the XBox, which he says makes that a more exciting machine.
I do agree with that potential bit about the Xbox - cloud processing is a beautiful idea, and the kinect really is an amazing piece of hardware - but it's not really tapping that potential yet. Neither console has any killer apps out yet, so I'd recommend a wait and see approach at this point.
For myself, I do really like the media center capabilities of the Xbox. It's what I'm using it for mostly at the moment. It does make me wish that more of my things could be voiced controlled though. I can flip the channel, watch netflix, change the volume, turn on/off the TV with my voice, but I have to get up to turn off the room lights? Annoying.
It's kind of hard to take anyone who praises the Kinect seriously. There isn't a single great game that utilizes it well. Might as well praise the color of the X-Box console.

Never claimed there were any good games for it - there's that bit about not tapping it's potential. It's the technical aspects that are impressive. The kinect solves a large number of extremely difficult problems that computer scientists have been working on for the past three decades. There are a lot of very cool tech demos out there of what the thing is capable of. Now that it's finally being fully supported, it means that we might actually get to see a game that uses it to it's potential.
If such a game was even 2 years away, we'd have heard about it.

I had the 360 last generation so I'll be getting the PS4. Last minute decision changes also don't give me the warm fuzzies about the direction of Xbox.
My son wants to replace his old Xbox with a newer version, but he doesn't want an Xbox One. Fine by me, the price differential is kinda crazy.
Why is he replacing his 360 with another 360? That's likely a waste of money. Just ride out the old version until you're ready for a new console.
I dunno....he just likes playing X Box Live, but is using an "old" console that's starting to fail. Spending $150 sounds better than $400-500, especially since Xbox One has extras he doesn't want or need?
If it's failing and out of warranty, I guess there's not much to do. The Xbox One isn't backwards compatible, so it wouldn't be able to play 360 games anyways. I thought you were getting a new model 360 just because it was new - they aren't actually upgrades over the older versions in any significant way.
There are some decent dance or exercise games for it if you're into that. But the best Kinect game we have is probably the original Kinect Sports it came with, great social fun like Wii Sports.
The thing that seems like pointless to me is the voice control for the media. If we're watching TV I'm perfectly capable of using the remote to change volume, I'd feel like a twat talking to the TV during a show in order to adjust the volume.
PS4 has more exclusive franchises I care about, and is cheaper, so leaning that way, despite the fact that I just love the color of the Xbox console.
