I heard some crime-avoidance 'expert' say people walking/talking on iphones is like counting a stack of $20 bills while walking on the sidewalk.

I found a huge caterpillar growing on one of my tomato vines. Quite startling. It blended so well in the plant architecture that it looked like a growing main stem, all plump and green. Turns out it's a tomato plant sucker garden pest mothra insect pest.

I think I already have seen the last of him as Gandalf a month or two ago, when I switched off 'The Hobbit' one-third through.
    Congratulations America

Some people simply don't understand how to recognize when they lost. My system is currently getting hammered by conservative groups who are threatening to go after any member of the library that advertises or pushes Obamacare while working for the county.

Why the late push you ask?

Because the ALA has officially started to send out their suggested directions and guidelines concerning the best way to educate the public on the changes that are coming Oct 1st.

This is strictly an information only service. Yet we're the new target (again) for the nutjobs.

    How very strange.

Isn't that like shooting the messenger?

  10. #3850
strange but not uncommon it seems. they lost the fight for the law, so now they are focused on making sure as few people know what they are entitled to as possible. I think this community had a similar discussion a while back concerning new citizens being taught what services their new country offers them.

Florida is in national news again. I hope local officials run with this before the courts decide. Mass chaos.

Shouldn't be surprised, but my triple monitor mount just punched a hole through in my Ikea desk. Thats about 5 years worth of sticker collecting that I have to throw away

Good. However you cut it, you were a grown man collecting stickers. STICKERS

Damn heat wave. Particularly brutal in urban areas, with all that asphalt and concrete. Hard to find breezy cross-ventilation when buildings block circulation....or windows can't be fully opened for security fears.

I visited my son in Philly yesterday. Temps were in the 90's, high humidity, heat index 105-110 F

Had to take my 19yr old cat to the vet for the last time today

Such a rapid decline...expected, but still...

We found her as a stray in the middle of the street over 18 years ago. Such a good pet.

Big meow-ow for you, Veldan. That's a deep hurt. My sincere condolences.

My brand new (and quite expensive) A/C system can't keep internal house temps below 78 degrees. Sure, outdoor temps are hovering in triple digits, but I expected my high-efficiency 'investment' would be more effective. The customer service rep advised me to hose down the external compressor unit with cold water, and ventilate the internal unit housed in my attic.

    Gee, thanks?

I'm very, very sorry for your loss.

    Sorry to hear, Veldan.

doesn't matter how efficient it is, its going to ice up if its overworking. if possible you should take the filter(s) off and take a flashlight over the coils in the unit in the attic, see if you can spot any build up. High quality filters combined with high efficiency units can lock up from ice quite commonly because the air speed going through the coils isn't high enough. Its one reason why I use those industrial green filters that are like a buck each from Home Depot. but I replace them every week or so instead of once a month (damn pets).

and of course window and door fits are a big problem with cool air escaping.

    This is excellent advice.

Nobody's A/C had been keeping up, not even stores. But thanks for the tips. I already use cheap filters (yep, cat hair). So I turned the fan OFF and set the thermostat to 78 to let it de-ice (assuming that was the problem). It was idle for a while and then kicked in again. Thankfully, the heat wave is subsiding.

I have no idea how people routinely tolerate 100+ degree weather with 100% humidity. Seriously.

Those places should not be considered human habitable.

  25. #3865
It gets tolerable in lower humidity. I was amazed I was able to sleep comfortably in the deserts for so long. I also usually don't use the A/C in NY, even at high temps. I really only use it based on humidity. Maybe I should just get a dehumidifier, do you think it would use less electricity than an A/C?

EDIT: Seems people ask this a lot online.

  26. #3866
We don't all have the heat tolerance you got from the lizard people ancestors all jews are descended from. I start melting at 80.

  27. #3867
Regardless of season, indoor or outdoor, my ideal temperature range is 60-70 degrees. Where can I move for that?

One of those places is called Bali. People live there. I pity them.

In desert heat you don' t really feel you are sweating; your sweat evaporates too fast to makes you feel sticky.

@dread: I don' t think it uses less electricity. It was 30C here in Istanbul the last two days, but with a bit of a breeze and low humidity I didn' t even turn on my AC. I just opened the windows and the wind kept the house liveable.
    Congratulations America

Lentils give me reflux; I love to eat lentils, but the aftermath is too much. It' s less fun even than spicy indonesian food, because that at least waits till the morning after to bother you.
    Congratulations America
