Default Which Newspaper Site Do You Use?

As much as I love to sit in the toilet and read the morning paper, I think I should give up this wasteful and archaic form of media. And although i could just google established newspaper sites, I feel as though this site would be much more helpful since the linked here tend to be much more reliable and any buffoon with opposable thumbs can suggest an unobjective news site.

so yeah, any free news sites? plox

You're. . . at college, right? You're school should be maintaining subscriptions. Start there.

We have subscriptions to Le Monde (a french newspaper) and whatnot. the library is approximately 30 minutes away from me though and I cannot pick up any of the relatively well-written and good newspaper since the Toronto Star kind of sucks dick and it's the only one within a 3 minute walk from my dorm. and the library is no where close to any of my classes, so...

    and thanks everyone!

Edit: I'm surprised no one suggested Fox yet. lol

I've yet to see a college in the US that didn't have an e-subscription to every major newspaper. I assume the same applies to Canadian colleges.

Since we're talking about obtaining information, I don't see why you're so caught up on the paper's editorial line. The problem I'd have with Fox News isn't that it's biased but that it's going to have a fairly narrow area of coverage.

Er, yeah, pretty much every major university in the US has electronic access to most newspapers and periodicals. You shouldn't have much trouble if you're on your school's network (or VPNed in); I can't imagine Canadian schools are any different than ours.

    Major sources I regularly read:
    BBC News
    Ha'aretz
    Yediot Acharonot
Google News (just for headlines... used to use CNN for this before their website became unreadable)
    The Economist
    WSJ
    NYTimes

I also read some other odds and ends from time to time... from subject specific blogs (e.g. Danger Room, Free Exchange) to conspiracy theory pages with occasionally useful bits of information (DebkaFile) to local news sites (the Globe, the Trib) and the occasional bit of demagoguery (Arutz Sheva, Ma'ariv, the Guardian).

Le Monde is not a bad newspaper.

Tsk, the Fuzzball making a Lewkesque grammatical mistake.

I get most of my factual info from: nytimes.com and bbc.co.uk/news (and occasionally washingtonpost.com and economist.com). If there's anything big happening in Israel or Central Asia/Caucasus, I go to haaretz.com and eurasianet.org, respectively. That leaves me with a fairly mediocre coverage of Africa and South America, but I don't really have the time to read about the specific situations there.

I think some newspapers here also have e-subscriptions which are cheaper, you get the full newspaper every day, but digitally. And of course full access to the website and online archives.
Keep on keepin' the beat alive!

    reddit.com

The main subreddits, the ones across the top of the screen, are overpopulated and commonly suffer from the Dumbest Common Denominator. But you can search for subreddits that are more specific to your tastes, hobbits, and locations.
99% of my news comes from the "new" submissions from reddit, but I'll load up the local TBO.com or cnn.com if I'm bored.

Fuzzy made a punctuation error, not a grammatical one.

Omega, nothing is stopping you from enjoying your morning dump while reading a newspaper. You don't even have to pay for the pleasure. "Free" newspapers are commonly found in diners, donut shops, hotel lobbies, even at McDonald's....being previously read or 24 hours old doesn't matter much for your *cough* intended purpose.

Fuzzy made a typographical error, a muscle memory mistake arising from having just used "you're" properly which I did not notice making after posting.

That is quite the comprehensive list I got. I think i'll either be neglecting my social life or depriving myself of oh so sweet sleep. And I didn't know major universities had e-subscriptions. I'll definitely look into it; it would facilitate my little quest. Thanks!

BBC news stories are generally no more than a page long. You can read the entire front page in 5 minutes, easily. The NY York times has perhaps 1-2 good stories per day, which take perhaps 3 minutes each to read. Economist stories are somewhere in between. You can easily keep up to date with the news with about 10-15 minutes a day.

I see references to Ha'aretz, but not Al-Jazeera. Any particular reason for this?

Because Haaretz provides actual news. Its editorial line is crap. Al-Jazeera finds it difficult to separate one from the other, and the quality of either isn't particularly great.

Ha'aretz's journalistic standards are far higher than al-Jazeera's. I do read them on occasion, though.

    Fuzzy made a typographical error,
How are those two errors mutually exclusive, how is that even a correction of what GGT said? A punctuation error does not care how you made the error or why only that, in fact, it is an error in punctuation.

The former carries connotations that include mental error while the other explicitly claims any error is mechanical in origin. The latter is also more a more precise term and we all know my fondness for precision.

That's what i'm getting at, the former doesn't include in it's definition any reason why the error exists. A punctuation error could be derived through mechanical malfunction or through a cognitive malfunction. That has nothing to do with what qualifies as a punctuation error. So GGT is correct.

Moving on... dealing with your second claim that it is more appropriate or precise to say a typographical error, I take issue with that statement as well. The difference between "your", and "you're" is not a slip of the finger. It's your brain grabbing the wrong word because it's grouping them by their phonetic sounds.

Which doesn't constitute a typo and is best catergorized as cognitive error.

So you completely ignored the second half of what I said in reply to GGT because you settled on it being a mental error. I know the difference between them, I did not grasp after the wrong homonym, I'd just typed "ypu're" and then corrected it to "you're" half a dozen words earlier in the sentence and my fingers followed the same pattern they'd engaged in twice in the last 20 seconds. Mechanical error. I was right here, the witness and perpetrator you arrogant. . . where do you come off taking issue with anything I say, jackass? Did you witness anything? Were you in my room watching me using some portable brain-scanner? Do you ANY reason whatsoever for challenging my narrative besides this asinine need to object to my contributing my own third-person "correction" on top of GGT's own vacuous issue with Loki's comment about my post?

How does a punctuaton error care about anything?

  27. #27
How does a punctuaton error care about anything?
We often personify objects that are inanimate. For example, a physict might say: gravity doesn't care about whether an object is blue or red it pulls on it all the same. (using a newtonian concept of gravity). Obviously we are simply referring to the structural definition of how gravity operates. Similiary i'm referring to the definition of what constitutes a grammatical, typographical, or punctuation error.

Should really follow the Economist more, it's a classy paper. I guess I can never quite believe that a magazine with a name like the Economist would put all their shit online for free.

It isn't, at least in the US. Without a subscription, you can only read 5 print articles a week.

No quick way around that either, unlike the NY Times. Too lazy to log in through my school.
