We have received a lot of feedback on our latest video clip, including from people concerned about the message it was sending.
It was a viral clip targeting, through social networks and new media, a young audience (16-24) who understand the plots and themes of martial arts films and video games. The reactions of these target audiences to the clip have in fact been positive, as had those of the focus groups on whom the concept had been tested.
The clip featured typical characters for the martial arts genre: kung fu, capoeira and kalaripayattu masters; it started with demonstration of their skills and ended with all characters showing their mutual respect, concluding in a position of peace and harmony. The genre was chosen to attract young people and to raise their curiosity on an important EU policy.
The clip was absolutely not intended to be racist and we obviously regret that it has been perceived in this way. We apologise to anyone who may have felt offended. Given these controversies, we have decided to stop the campaign immediately and to withdraw the video.

It does seem that the most accurate interpretation of the ad is that the Chinese, Indians, and Brazilians are all out for European blood and will only be deterred by a stronger European Union. Can't imagine the EU saying that publicly.

This seems to be exactly what the EU really is meant to be -- a confederation of Yurps avoiding inter-Yurp war to protect themselves against outsiders and economic threats to the precious welfare/social-democratic model.

The woman, who does this whole feminine thing with getting the ferocious newcomers to sit down and talk rather than fight. Which is like 100% the soft power the EU is supposed to stand for. You may also notice that the woman is not scared but alert. And her outfit is indeed Kill Bill, which sort of makes it a disappointment she doesn't kick everybody's ass and then some more, but sits them down for a circle talk.

You call me Little Englander but the truth is I want to be open and free with the whole world, the EU is nothing more than a tool to be open and free with Europe. The freedoms we enjoy in Europe I want to enjoy WITH BRICs, you want AGAINST them. This advert was not just ill-advised, but it also belies this small-minded, closed off, failing and ultimately doomed "us against them" mentality.

Nope, that whole Europe is feminine thing is well established. Having countries represented by their dominant etnicities is only racist in countries that have problematic race relations (yes chinese man may be a British passport holder, but in general a man from China does look like that chinese man in the ad). The message that seem to be lost on you and other people is that this woman is not a victim at any time during the video. What makes it so impossible for you to percieve that woman as anything but a victim? Sexism seems to be a bigger problem than racism to me.

Hazir, you ratfucker, the problem with the video isn't the appearance of non-European ethnicities, but what they're doing. The way the woman reacts is really non-relevant. She knows her magic powers will protect her. The the video depicts a Chinaman, an Indian and a huge black dude jumping out to attack this one white woman. That is a very, very provocative, dangerous bit of imaginary and it shouldn't be played around with lightly. We all know what the intended meaning was (and Randblade has covered some of the problems with what it was actually trying to say), but it doesn't change how problematic the basic image is. It's like, you can do a picture of a black guy with a bone through his nose eating a watermelon and say the water melon actually represents institutional racism and the bone is the history of slavery or something, but it's still a picture of a black guy with a bone through his nose, eating a watermelon.
Also, only three of the four BRICs countries are represented here. One is missing. Why do we think that is?

The woman is Russian, the Chinaman is a shoesalesman from Prague, The Brazilian has a coffeeshop in Amsterdam and the Indian of course is an IT specialist in England. In their spare time they practise their hobbies of Urban Freestyling, levitating and breakdancing.

We think that would be because Russians have never brought forward anything distinctive enough to be recognized at one glance. It took you quite a while to figure that one out, or did you just happen to read about it in some third rate article?
Now, since you forced me to watch the ad again; how do you come to the conclusion that these men attack the woman at all? All they do is make some hostile gestures indicative of some more violent ways of conflict solving but they never even come within striking distance of her.
The very obvious reason why those men were aggressive was to make the point that Europe is not aggressive in its dealings with other nations. It's a weebit arrogant maybe, but it's the consistent message the EU gives off about being a soft-power superpower.
