Is this Dread's TWF Manifesto?
I used to think about myself as a nerd... until I joined a forum community some years ago, where people were adults, some worked in engineering and physics, and I realized I was no nerd. I suffered from bullying because I made some knowledge accesible to newbies. And I discovered that some felt like they were the masters of wisdom and owners of knowledge, so they felt threatened when I shared what I learned in simple words for newbies.
They were also very narrow minded. I was foreseen unemployment in US in 2008, and they called me "troll", "socialist", "antiUS", and all kind of coloful adjectives. They warned me and banned me. World economy proved me right.
They got me into ego wars, and that helped me to be a bit more humble, as having an ego makes you suffer in ego wars. When you are humble, ego becomes irrelevant. You need not to prove anything. So in a way I had personal growth.
The social inability they had is not just something they suffer, but their hostility is something that I suffered too. I met a few Sheldons there. Quite annoying. Why should I stay where they do not want me.
Even if it looks like mockery, The Big Bang Theory shows people who are more socially skilled than those nerds in that science forum. So if the first season showed them as dorks, I can tell I have met more dorky nerds. Fortunately I realized I am not that nerd, just another guy, as I am neither an aeronautics engineer, nor a theoretical physicist, nor a researcher or astronomer.
I have met enthusiasts of nerdy things, who are more socially skilled than those nerds, so I prefe to be with them. What are your experiences as a nerd or experiencies with nerds?
