Does this have potential? Should it make better use of the eternal memory of the internet? I am inclined to think this sort of concept could be used to great effect in a tiny country like Sweden.

Many of these people delete or restrict access to their twitter accounts, others just try to delete the offending posts, and a surprisingly large group of dumbfucks continue the idiocy in desperate attempts to defend their honour. Many seem to be good-for-nothing kids with nothing going for them, and no-one cares about them... but those who also have professional lives... they're so tempting

It's fair game, especially because the people are idiots. But seems like it just encourages a mob mentality, and also provides fodder for stalkers to harass people's personal/professional lives for random Twitter posts.

Almost as important is something like 90% of Americans don't use Twitter, so the inferences being made are somewhat self-serving.

I think back to the days of Atard, when the place was clearly falling apart for good and people came to me asking to prune their old posts. Doesn't seem right to use this kind of stuff against people. I'd rather folks be judged by their actions and in-person interactions first and foremost.

Wasn't there a thread on Atari about a news article relating how a parent used public shaming as a form of discipline on her kid? And you thought it was pure and simple abuse?

i think there is potential for abuse here esp in the form of harrassment which is one reason i'm a little ambivalent. that said, do you think children should be treated as adults when it comes to punishment? and do you think these adults were forced by anyone to say what they said for the whole world to see?

I remember that -- but it was a mother who put her child in a pig costume, made her stand in the front yard by the street, holding a sign saying I AM A PIG.

The supposed anonymity of the internet can bring out the jerkiness in some people, without realizing the real trauma it can cause to real people. Before ya know it, the media is "reporting" on Twitter and Facebooks "trends", and it becomes "news". What's astonishing is the number of public figures who haven't figured this out, but can't help themselves from Twittering.

Amusing somewhat though gets very repetitive I found. Very much got a clear partisan spin to the posts which shouldn't really be a surprise but idiocy is not partisan. There will be just as many partisan from the opposite direction posts that are equally amusing but will never see that blog of course.

It's relevant only because people in the media often use Twitter feeds as a proxy for citizen outrage/opinions, even going so far as to quote Twitter users. So when I see people publicly shaming Twitter users, it's like a small subset of people shaming another small subset of people...but expecting the broader majority of people to agree with the shamers.
