As of tomorrow vacuum cleaners using more than 1600w will be phased out in the EU. According to British newspapers that means the best models are being banned. Funny that, given that the power of the engine has got very little to do with actual suction and in a recent test in Holland the best model actually has a 1200w engine. Philips already is selling vacuum cleaners that use less than 800w, while still giving good results.

I see no comments whatsoever about "die in its own dirt", you made that up yourself - not looked into the Express link but that is a joke rag that isn't representative of the entire "British press" by any measure. The links you give (which are not representative of all comments in the media) are nowhere near as hysterical as you fictionalised.
Though it is interesting that you mention a 1200w cleaner as being the best model - its worth noting that will be banned in a few years.

Not that I think it will die, but which geniuses thought it was a good idea to appoint an EU foreign policy chief who has 6 months of foreign policy experience (and is viewed as being sympathetic to Russia to boot)? And it seems Eastern European concerns over this move were horse traded away by letting a Polish Prime Minister gain another EU executive position.

Since the EU doesn't really have a foreign policy, I think it hardly matters who holds the position of its chief. But to answer your question; that would be PM Enzi. The 'horse trade' wasn't so much over the Presidency of the Council but over the Presidency of the Commission a while ago.

Given that there is zero chance in the forseeable future that foreign policy will be a QMV field of policy it really doesn't matter all that much. The person in the job should be a decent manager of the diplomatic service and little more than that. Once unanimity is no longer a requirement we'll get different foreign policy chiefs for the simple reason that the position comes with real powers.

And after the technology changed and was getting widely adopted they were ruled out. Here we are ruling out many the models that are currently rated the best. They weren't banned before better options were available. Certainly not when it is possibly being self-defeating as if it takes twice as long to do the same job with a worse-performing cleaner that uses 75% of the energy then you end up net using more energy.
The limit as of yesterday is now 1600w, the limit is being lowered very soon to 900w. Hence my in a few years remark, that is a much more significant drop.

I'd much prefer a free market fix to, "I like my Roomba and it works for me, so let's force everyone to use my solution," but I'm old fashioned like that.
Like market solutions work so perfect if people simply don't know. I personally will admit to thinking untill quite recently that high wattage meant better suction. I learned different because in Turkey all machines have to indicate efficiency on the energy label. I realised I'd always been buying vacuum cleaners on the basis of misinformation.
