    Default Law & Order cancelled

NEW YORK, May 14 (UPI) -- NBC has confirmed its New York police procedural-legal drama "Law & Order" will end its 20-season run this month.

If the show had been brought back for another season it would have surpassed "Gunsmoke" as the longest-running TV drama series in U.S. history. Right now, the two shows are tied for that distinction.

NBC said Friday it has ordered a 12th season of the spinoff "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit," as well as the new series "Law & Order: Los Angeles" for the 2010-11 television season.
The original "L&O" is to end its 20-season run May 24, the network said.

The announcements were made Friday by Angela Bromstad, president of prime time entertainment for NBC and Universal Media Studios.

"'Law & Order' has been one of the most successful franchises in the history of television, which is why it is so critical that we continue this important brand and our relationship with Dick Wolf and his team with 'LOLA' and 'Law & Order: SVU,'" Bromstad said in a statement.

"The full measure of the collective contributions made by Dick Wolf and his 'Law & Order' franchise over the last two decades to the success of NBC and Universal Media Studios cannot be overstated," said Jeff Gaspin, chairman of the NBC Universal Television Entertainment. "The legacy of his original 'Law & Order' series will continue to make an impact like no other series before."
I prefer SVU myself (raping, beating and mutilating? yes please!), but still, 20 years
In the future, the Berlin wall will be a mile high, and made of steel. You too will be made to crawl, to lick children's blood from jackboots. There will be no creativity, only productivity. Instead of love there will be fear and distrust, instead of surrender there will be submission. Contact will be replaced with isolation, and joy with shame. Hope will cease to exist as a concept. The Earth will be covered with steel and concrete. There will be an electronic policeman in every head. Your children will be born in chains, live only to serve, and die in anguish and ignorance.
The universe we observe has precisely the properties we should expect if there is, at bottom, no design, no purpose, no evil, no good, nothing but blind, pitiless indifference.

Too bad it hasn't been any good for the last 8 or so.

Nailed it. I've only liked the Law&Order episodes with him and the black guy as detectives. But I do enjoy the endless parade of attractive female assistant assistant DAs who do little.

Another observation: police procedurals are now where Hollywood careers go to die. Jeff Goldblum, Ice T, a couple others I can't think of right now. When they show up in the police procedural, you know that they haven't gotten a good movie role in a few years.

    I think it's sad.

It's not like NBC is going to come up with something better to put in its place. They tend to get rid of everything decent (what was that show with the time-travelling guy, Wraithy? That was NBC, wasn't it...)

I've actually heard Parenthood isn't bad, but the second I start watching it the cancellation will happen.

    That was the one.

It reinforced my feelings from Firefly that it is bad to start liking shows before they have several seasons.

Yeah I fell for that one, I really enjoyed Firefly (it was just so wacky) and then I found it had already been cancelled - ripped off!

And, after several seasons, the quality starts going downhill fast anyway... TV just fucking sucks. Time for a new production model that's not rooted in 1950's technology, I say.

Jerry was great, I miss him. But as long as Marissa is still around on SVU then I'm happy.

NBC said "Heroes," a cult favorite for a while on Monday nights that faded badly, was canceled. The network had already said it was ending "Law & Order" after 20 years on its schedule.
Considering the last season, that is such a blessing.

That 10 p.m. schedule has four new programs and one, "Parenthood," that has only been on the air for a few months. They include a Jerry Bruckheimer drama about catching criminals on the lam, another "Law & Order" spinoff, an unconventional hour-long comedy and a series where Jimmy Smits plays a U.S. Supreme Court justice who quits to return to private practice.
Luckily it sounds like they'll pick right back up with the fine programming we can expect from NBC.

I should just give up teevee entirely.

I haven't had a TV in a while, but I had seen some new episodes from time to time and the quality had deteriorated. Still, that show was a cash cow for so many New York businesses. They filmed everywhere.

Somewhere out there is an episode where the finding-the-body scene is in my high school. Finding and seeing that episode is one of my life goals.

If you find out the episode number, getting it and seeing it won't be an issue

Indeed, I just have no idea which one. No one seems to have records or any idea. Folks just saw them filming, and the school got a check but otherwise can't find anything specific. The only solution is to watch every episode from the past ten years and watch for it.

He was in a lot of crappy action movies. Like XXX - totally juvenile tripe with lots of senseless violence, skin, and absolutely no plot or connection with reality... that probably made hundreds of millions of dollars, sigh.

And given what his "music" was (which is what he was famous for first), he's pretty high up on the list of enemies of culture and intelligence.

I think you mean Ice Cube. Wasn't he the one in XXX 2?

But it's true that Ice T was never really a star either. But Hollywood to police proceedurals is still a drop.

    Why?

Granted that I haven't actually listened to any of his music - I despise rap - but there's a difference between killing cops and being gangsta and holding your piece sideways to look cool and hardcore, yo... and actually killing cops for [one of the multitude of] the *right* reasons. As hard as it is to do, rappers and gangstas have found possibly the only bad reason to kill cops. <shudder>

Body Count is an American heavy metal band formed in Los Angeles, California in 1990. The group was founded by Ice-T, best known for his contributions to the hip hop genre. Ice-T founded the group out of his interest in heavy metal, and took on the role of vocalist for the group, writing the lyrics for most of the group's songs, while the music was written by lead guitarist Ernie C. The group's self-titled debut album was released on Sire Records in 1992.

Body Count was badass in it's day. It still has some slight appeal for me, but the novelty quickly wore off. It was never considered rap Cain, though some folks did try brand it as rap-metal, or metal-rap. Dolts!

Edit: Oh,btw, L&O without Jerry is like vodka without O.J. It's not the worst thing around, but could be much better.

I was never a big fan but I appreciated what they were about - controversy + heavy metal (not sure if it really qualifies as Heavy) have proven to be a successful combination.

Angry young men like to listen to angry young men sing about being angry young men - then they get older and it becomes nostalgic.

    The Rules
Copper- behave toward others to elicit treatment you would like (the manipulative rule)
Gold- treat others how you would like them to treat you (the self regard rule)
Platinum - treat others the way they would like to be treated (the PC rule)

As police procedurals go, it's not bad, its twist being that it follows every case from discovery/investigation with cops all the way through trial with DA. Quite unrealistic that way, since it was always the same homicide investigative team and the same Asst DA.

Sort of heavy on the righteousness of law enforcement and prosecution, ignoring issues like power hungry DAs and dumbass/corrupted cops. And the intro bit always pissed me off because anybody who believes in justice recognizes that an equally important part of the criminal justice system is a competent defense. Sort of a Lewk's eye view of the world where the accused are always guilty and the cops/DAs are always honorable and right.

Still, moderately entertaining. Like most long-running series, it had nice broad appeal, but thereby lost any real edginess or exceptional quality.
