And soda is a huge reason the country is so much more obese. The typical American consumes almost three times as many calories from sugary drinks as in the late 1970s. This increase accounts for about half the total per-capita rise in calorie consumption over the same period. Remember, many of these drinks have zero nutritional benefit — unlike meat, cheese or juice.
Water has zero "nutritional benefit" too, unless you count hydration as nutrition.
I hate it when they make declarative statements like that and don't back it up....what about sweet tea FFS, what about sugar in general, or corn syrup in every damn food item, what about processed flour, etc. Maybe sedentary lifestyles are worse than food or beverages of ANY kind.As Kelly Brownell, a Yale researcher, says, the link between obesity and soda is scientifically stronger than the link between obesity and any other type of food or beverage.
But you wanted to talk about the graph and prices, instead of the proposed tax on soda. They should have added the cost of bottled water on that chart....
The Soda market has been in a nasty tug of war between Coke and Pepsi ever since Coke Classic was introduced in 85. Notice how thats when the other lines on the graph start trending up. So they keep undercutting each other, and the smaller players have to follow suit. Then you've got the store brand labels coming in and going even lower.
Then in the last decade or so we've seen this retarded fad of hipster morons going for price jacked Vitamin water type brands thinking they are more healthy simply because they aren't carbonated.
I think people understand Soft Drinks aren't healthy drinks, but they come out cheaper than any other bottled drink on the store selves, they almost have to unless they want to go bankrupt.
I'm curious if this graph charts bottled sodas only, because fountain drinks hold some of the highest mark ups you can find at most resturants.
And they get these special deals with rest stops and fast food chains to offer only their products. I hate that.
Just insert my usual rant about farm subsidies and the farm bill here. Curse the fact that Iowa is the first primary (and not even a primary, but the much less democratic "caucus." Grr.) If California were first, we'd all eat avocados and almonds.
