Default Smell Like A Man, Man!

The body wash campaign “touches on a very subtle but powerful sentiment that is bubbling under the surface of American culture now, and that is that it’s O.K. to be a man,” said Rob Frankel, author of “The Revenge of Brand X.” Mr. Frankel compared the spots to those from a competing men’s brand, Axe, which is known for over-the-top commercials in which men who use the products become suddenly irresistible to scantily clad women.

“Axe turns women into scent-sniffing bimbos and nymphomaniacs and is more about, ‘Use our product and it will enhance your sex appeal,’ ” said Mr. Frankel. “But Old Spice goes to your own character, and they’re really reaffirming masculinity.”

In a posting on the Web site Jezebel shortly after the first ad was introduced in February, Irin Carmon wrote about its appeal.

“Among the reasons the ‘I’m on a horse’ ad quickly became a viral sensation — a clever script, some surreal transitions, Mustafa’s magnetism — had to be the fact that women could enjoy it without feeling like we were participating in our own diminishment,” Ms. Carmon wrote.

Old Spice spent $7.5 million advertising body wash in 2009, well under the $30 million spent by Axe body wash, according to the Kantar Media unit of WPP. But in the first quarter of 2010 Old Spice advertised far more aggressively, spending $11.4 million to Axe’s $3.6 million.

Body wash sales, including women’s and unisex varieties, grew to $755 million in 2009, from $500 million in 2004, an increase of 51 percent, according to a 2009 report by Mintel, the market research firm.

“Guys have been a little slower to adopt body wash because early on they didn’t feel like it got them as clean as bar soap,” said James Moorehead, vice president of marketing at Old Spice, which introduced body wash in 2003.

Some men told marketers they were reluctant to use the nylon webbing sponges called “poufs,” which raise a lather and clean more effectively but were off-putting because of their dainty name and appearance. In 2009 Old Spice introduced a pouf in a rubber grip and called it a Deck Scrubber.

“An experienced seaman knows the gentler sex is unlikely to board a vessel whose deck, galley and undercarriage has not been scrubbed as clean as the shiny inside part of an oyster shell,” states the package. (Axe introduced its own manly pouf, called the Detailer, in 2008)

“It took a little time for guys to get over the pouf,” Mr. Moorehead said.

    Hi, Nessie.

The first half of the article talks about their ad campaign, Facebook page and Twitter-ings. They have their own 'channel' on youtube. I'd not seen these commercials until now.

It's hilarious, brilliant marketing! But also a bit pathetic....

The last half dozen or so of our youtube thread postings are about TheManOnTheHorse....

Are they about the Old Spice guy? I'd never heard of it

    Axe vs Old Spice. wow.....

  4. #4
Yeah, the Old Spice guy, cartoon fan, ex NFL player, the guy with an awesome body, great voice, who smells great, and has a daughter named after a batman character.

Never knew Axe was so big, always considered them a product for those self entitled, popped collar, fake tan, douche bag types.

My son likes their body wash, that's the only reason the article caught my eye.

He stood in the aisle and looked at the body scrubbers (Adidas has one too) but decided it was over the top, and got a sea sponge instead. Then his older brother ruined it by cutting it up for art painting.

    Cute.

My son likes Bath and Body Works Warm Vanilla Sugar body wash, he says it makes him smell like a man. I agree that it is quite masculine smelling.

Old Spice and Axe both smell entirely too strong (on actual men, I mean). Not attractive at all.

It's all subjective, you know. Old Spice started new "scent lines", all very different from the old Old Spice (which they call Original). They also have one that's a shampoo + body wash, and now some for "skin care" (dry or oily). All the major brands are dipping their toes into the water of men's skin care products. Besides razors and shave creams, there are exfoliators and moisturizers now, with sunscreen, too.

The aisle for deodorants / anti-perspirants is getting complicated now. They try to push head-to-toe scent lines---so shampoo doesn't "conflict" with deodorant or cologne.

    He should be naked.

But the steroids probably shrunk his candy anyway.

Back a few years ago people thought it was old-manish to buy Old Spice. Now it's the opposite. Major marketing win.

But sorta laughably bad compared to the new ones.

Those ads are great because they're laughably bad! And they're also fairly recent I think.

Yeah, but there's a reason Isaiah Mustafa has become a celebrity and that guy hasn't.

    meme ≠ celebrity

Internet has opened a lot of doors for Mustafa in the acting world, NBC signing him to a talent contract is a good start, but I would hardly call the result of half a week of old spice viral marketing a better celebrity status over say... being in the NFL.
Not to mention your lack of White Chicks and Balls of Fury watching...

    EDIT:
Appears all the talk show appearances were well before this viral campaign, after only the 1st Old Spice TV commerical (YAY for product placement!), and Mustafa had an acting career before Old Spice picked him up.

I've never seen an Old Spice advert but recognise the father from Everybody Hates Chris.

My 2 cents: I hate man scents, and I don't wear them.

But then, I hate perfume, and hate pretty much all scented items. I think I have a pretty sensitive sense of smell. My wife can only wear the very slightest of smells. Oh, and I can smell scented tampons and the like. Women, be aware that some people can. For me, I'll walk by a woman in the hall, and she might as well be wearing a button that says "I'm menstruating!" Not that it matters, but some might appreciate knowing that.

In the future, the Berlin wall will be a mile high, and made of steel. You too will be made to crawl, to lick children's blood from jackboots. There will be no creativity, only productivity. Instead of love there will be fear and distrust, instead of surrender there will be submission. Contact will be replaced with isolation, and joy with shame. Hope will cease to exist as a concept. The Earth will be covered with steel and concrete. There will be an electronic policeman in every head. Your children will be born in chains, live only to serve, and die in anguish and ignorance.
The universe we observe has precisely the properties we should expect if there is, at bottom, no design, no purpose, no evil, no good, nothing but blind, pitiless indifference.

I still think the best smell of a man is a clean one.

Just out of the shower with a freshly laundered shirt, still smelling like dryer sheet.

    Such a turn on.

  23. #23
I meant just using soap, don't necessarily need the smelly stuff because it detracts from the clean shirt smell.

That's been my working philosophy. I'm guessing that women who like man perfume have studiously avoided me!

I don't even do laundry sheet though. But my wife does say I am pretty fastidiously clean for a guy. Wash clothes frequently, shower every day (more if I work out). I use a good deodorant. So no smell to cover up. I've always found the "clean human" smell to be a good one. And I'll add that "clean woman" is an absolutely wonderful smell that no perfume could possibly enhance.

How's it possible to smell scented tampons?

Clean is a nice scent, I like all the Fresh Linen and powdery fragrances in products. Crisp cotton shirt hot off the iron is lovely. Bleached white shower towels, too.

I hate all the powdery fragrances. They make me gag and give me a headache.

I date my preference back to baby powder, loved the scent of clean bathed baby.

On the gender-marketing end of things.....surprised no one's mentioned the trend of making men look, well, sort of dim?

From the Geico cavemen, or the guy doing squats instead of drinking lite beer, or noticing the chill window on his beer box -- instead of his girlfriend in lingerie. How about the Taco Bell ad where the guys are attracted to the woman with bacon in her purse.

I actually like many of the Axe flavors, but you have to be careful to not overdo them. This seems to be the problem with a lot of those "more is better" guys.

The same can be said about any perfume on women and man.

Body sprays are repulsive. I do not want you near me if you're going to assault my olfactory system with whatever chemicals you think make you smell attractive. Aftershave is probably the worst offender. Tip: use witch hazel instead.
