Reading on various forums like civfanatics about my ridiculously long processing time between turns. Seems like they aren't ridiculous after all. Quite a few people complaining about >10minute proc times.People reading books when they press End Turn and many similar stories.
The majority of the people who commented seemed to have a 60 second proc time, so my ~45 sec proc time doesn't seem so bad now. Still irritating, but hopefully they'll address it in the first patch.
I got tricksed yesterday by the AI
(Read: a series of random events played out unfavourably for me, but if I squint my eyes, it almost looks like the AI was clever and set up and ambush)
English declare on Venice. I wanted good relations with Venice and Lizzy has been e-mailing me with all kinds of insults. Since my knights and longswordsmen could easily deal with her warriors, spearmen and the odd swordsman, I declare on the Lizster even though I only have 1 knight, 2 longswordsmen, 1 crossbow and 1 chariot archer at my disposal. The rest is parading Ghandi's borders in a test if he can be lured out to declare on me.
So after some skirmishes my knight spots a lone warrior standing in open terrain behind enemy lines, no other units in sight. Easy kill I think, and go for it. Only after defeating the warrior I spot two spears and 1 sword within striking distance, no moves left. Bugger. Send chariot archer to weaken one of the spears and send longswordsman to present an alternative target. Her move: spears attack knight, sword attacks longsword (sword dies), and one warrior appears and walks to stand next to my longsword. Everyone lives, is damaged, but all her spears are red-lined while my knight and longsword are just yellow. My turn: knight takes spear to 1 hp, chariot archer weakens another spear to 2 hp, but my longsword is caught in warrior's Zone of Command and can only attack the warrior, which he does. Crossbow shoots another damaged sword, no kill, 1 hp left. Damn.
So, I'm feeling pretty secure. All her units 1 or 2 hp left, my knight and longsword, yellow and a chariot archer and crossbow full strength.
Her turn: All her units have promotions and healSpear kills knight, spear kill chariot archer, sword unit which was behind warrior kills longsword.
My turn: Crossbow runs for safety.
Lesson learned, go for the kill even though units have only 1 hp left.

Having a lot of fun in current game as Darius of Persia.
Large map, Prince, have 14-15 cities, and 24
Crushed the wobbly-kneed Germans with a couple of cavemen in about 3k BC, swept aside the faint-hearted Greeks at the end of the Medieval era, and am now poncing around designing fancy architecture and painting pretty pictures in the mid-Renaissance, while preparing to defend against the impending Nappy hegemony. He's being an aggressive little fucker and has plans to teach the world to sing the Marselleise. The Egyptians, Ottomans and Romans are already eating a lot more cheese than normal.
Everyone declared on me except for the Liz. \o/
I'm kinda worried about that. Peace treaties are 10 turns right? I've been unable to declare on Lizzie for about 20 turns now because of a peace treaty we seem to have. So allied Venice is now having all the fun, envy! And she was on the phone, "I'm going to beat up your little friend, what are you going to do about it", and I can't even call her back to pester her she can't even defeat a little city state. I want my war with Liz!
Oh well, lets see what Ghandi and Hiawatta can throw at me. Both have more cities, but I have the tech lead.
3 fronts with no choke points makes fighting a way more entertaining than camping on choke points. Have had some nice fights in open fields with lots of maneuvering![]()

I'm screwed. How the hell does the AI manage an empire of dozens of cities, knocking of the neighbors one, two, three, zing, and still have happiness and still be making literally hundreds a turn????? I've got 1/4 the cities and unhappy fucking people all over the fucking place and barely enough money to keep the fucking water running.![]()

I'm playing King level, huge pangea. I'm the Arabs and I've got, oh, 6 cities proper with maybe 4 puppets. I can't check right now as I'm hard at work. Hiawatha and Bismark, on the other hand, each have probably two dozen cities, are conquering my neighbors around me, and each take in over a hundred gold a turn. Hiawatha's got 10k gold just sitting in his bank. I've got unhappy people all the time -despite building theatres and colluseams more or less always - and I'm barely making the rent payment, to say nothing of being able to keep up more than a token army. I'd LOVE to pay off some of the neighboring city states but money's always in short supply.

That many puppets can be a problem. These guys just build one building after another and you're stuck with the upkeep. If you have puppets, best send your worker over to their lands and spam tradeposts. No hammers, so they'll build slower. Just 6 cities of your own and 4 puppets on a huge map shouldn't give you that much grieve. Are you shy of luxury goods, can you trade with AI? Any policies available to you?

The biggest benefit of the arabs is their special building - the bazaar. It doubles the number of luxuries you have to trade out of that city. But I'm having trouble getting trading partners - they either offer me shit, don't have any money, or they've already got every luxury I'm offering. So I can't tap into Hiawatha's money party. I think I fucked myself on the policies. I know I don't have a coherent plan there. I should have stuck with piety - you get a lot of happiness fixes there. I'm thinking about dumping the game and starting new with an emphasis on

I've not been that aggressive to get that far, so I'm not sure. I'd think you want to aim for luxury goods, only keep the really good cities raze the rest. Or maybe even gift them to an ally. Also, if you're having money problems you might want to micromanage your cities to lock the tiles that produce gold. If they're on production, default or growth it often ignores those. It also helps to keep your cities small and have scientist and merchant specialists instead of citizens working growth tiles. I often use the avoid growth checkbox.
Game I'm playing on King, Huge with Napoleon I've got about 10 cities 13 happiness and +55 gold per turn. Rather big army as well. Still building army to take on Ghandi or Hiawatta so I might be having problems in a while as well.
If you're planning on a large empire, the expansion policies really help. Especially the +for every trade route. 10 cities = 9
Every city you conquer and connect +
which is a nice counter when you're getting
from occupied cities.

Finishing my thought there - I'd like to focus on exploiting the city states, go down the patronage tree and see how that works out. Its fun when you declare war and 3 or 4 city states have your back and declare with you.![]()

I had an open border bug like that, and a research agreement bug. Couldn't get new open borders or new research agreement, since they were already in place. For 100 turns...
I'm now playing as catherine, on huge, on the real earth and I started in Iraq, roughly. Figured I'd try to go for cultural victory for a change. Managing my own empire decently, have 6 cities, 63 happiness, ~190 culture/turn. Money is a bit of a problem, since I have two huge empires north of me, and one of them disliked me. So I need at least some army (and he still taunts me about how small it is), which costs money to maintain. And cultural.. just takes soo long. I need 11 or 12 more policies, and it takes me around 17 turns per policy, so I need to keep Ceasar away from my cities for a long time. I did however liberate two militaristic city states (too bad they weren't cultural..) when I counterattacked after Alexander was annoying. I'd gladly do the same with Ceasar.. but I'm afraid my army just is way too small and powerful to invade him. I'm not even sure I can hold him off if he invades me. Let's hope he goes into a resource consuming war with England...
I am curious how he keeps his people happy, has a huge army, and still has 1000+ in cash.

Oh, and did I mention he's also ~3 technologies ahead of me? I'm fucked![]()

When it comes down to a defensive war, a small army can quite comfortably hold of a bigger more advanced one. I think the AI definitely cheats from king and higher levels. The only other reason I can think of that AI's have higher happiness that they're trading away their luxury goods to each other the moment they've got them, leaving you with no one to trade with. I rarely see Ai's with 2 luxury trade goods and often they're unwilling to trade them with me.
I started expanding and my happiness is now down to 3 because I didn't keep my eye on my cities, and .a lot of them grew. I had to put every city on stagnation or even starvation and lock every tile. Still +33 money, still supporting a large army. Most of my cities didn't have a coliseum yet, so building those and markets/banks everywhere for my next wave of expansion. Hopefully the new cities are online by then. I also ressurected Alexander who was wiped out by Ghandi and now has his 3 cities back. And he's still pissed of at meI had to do this so I could nick a few more cities, and when the time comes I'll take them back easily since he has no army or tech.

Turns out the AI is by now losing money per turn, so maybe I caught them in a Golden Age. I was attacked by now and am holding off - but damn, a lot of enemy artillery is annoying! Especially since they are technologically ahead of me, so they do a lostof damage when two or three of them hit the same unit in one turn.Strategically placed citadels definitely help a lot, though. And maybe I could conquer and then resurrect some japanese cities inbetween us - he won't be able to cross them without declaring war with Japan. That'd be a nice buffer.
I do think I have found another bug though: two of my cossacks were bombarded by artillery that I can't see. They are both three tiles away from a city, where I presume the artillery is. I can see all tiles that are two away from them - and I thought that was the limit for artillery. So how can they get hit without me seeing them??
I think I lose a bit of money each turn now, but with my awesome happiness I have golden ages all the time anyway. I'm not really usre if it will be possible to get a cultural victory before the timer runs out - and I really have a lot of culture, so I'm not sure how feasible that route is in any game.
Keep on keepin' the beat alive!
It may be that you need to annex some cities and build courthouses to get rid of the extra. From there you can build what you want and avoid growth. It's trick if you want a cultural victory or can't afford
for ~20 turns (depending on your production rate).
Flixy, if you've got extra cash, allying with a cultural city-state or even completing quests for them is a great way to get extra culture (as you are already aware). If you're dead-bent on the cultural victory, make sure you've got a city with very strong production for the Utopia Project. If you need to whip out that victory in the middle of a war the construction could really screw you over.
EDIT: Didn't realized you posted before me!
Since I can't declare on Lizzy due to an everlasting Peace treaty bug I can't win by Domination, so it's going to be tech or cultural victory. Problem is I just expanded to 16 cities, with 6 annexed cities, so don't know how feasible culture victory is.= 1, moneys down to 13 a turn. Have to build my economy again.
And the Artillery is indeed the first unit (except for longbows) with range 3.

Damn that sucks - the peace treaty bug.
I'm mid-industrial - have just flattened Nappy's last city. Only 3 other nations to squash now, but they've only got around 8 or 9 cities each, whereas Nappy had ~30.
So Prince has been rather easy.
Straight on up to King in the next game then.
Will go Epic rather than Marathon this time too ...
Still haven't reached any military units beyond riflemen and cavalry.![]()
