Default Rolling your own Dropbox clone using Amazon's servers?

    Something like:

But backed by Amazon's S3 service.

Whatcha reckon, would it be worthwhile for someone whose storage needs are, say, just over 2 GB, and whose transfer needs are... er, unknown? Would it be worthwhile for you?

I'm interested to see if this GDrive materializes based on the rumors/employee goof from a few weeks ago. Anything on either Google or Amazon servers could get some business from me, though for privacy reasons I would struggle to get rid of my backup hard drives.

I'm alloted 50 GB of backup space with the hosting I've purchased from Dreamhost, which at Dropbox's $9.99 per month is probably equal in cost...but I also get a free domain name, and webhosting...so...I guess I could roll my own, not use Amazon's servers, and use the hosting service I already pay for...

...and if you really only need 2 GB of backup or less, perhaps sticking everything on a flash drive and carrying it around on your person 24/7 or with your keys is a better bet.

not sure if this can enable the same sort of syncing but thought it was cool

Have you looked into backing with SkyDrive? It's free, but has higher limits than the free version of S3, and no risk of accidentally getting billed. It looks like it works with this GoodSync too.

...or there's Carbonite, which provides an agent to automagically back up a whole computer for ~$5/month ($60/year).

If I had a faster upstream, I'd force them to change their ToS by attaching my ~5 TB RAID array.

Thanks for reminding me of SkyDrive, I'm just trying to figure out a way to easily sync folders between my android devices and my computers in a way that somewhat resembles eg. Dropbox or Ubuntu One. The only Android client I've tried can't access the folders that sync via Live Mesh. Blech, but I'm sure it'll get there

EDIT: Take it back, it's okay.
