Personally playing my first run-through as a wizard currently on the second act I've needed to think on what skills to use, where to stand etc especially against bosses. I've died a few times - perhaps playing as a tank is different ballgame.
From what I've seen the wizard gets easier as you play, Blizzard has already nerfed some of their tricks.

watch how the player lights up the Q W E (1-3) keys.

Crazy part is that I'm not trying to play as a tank. My only concern has been using whatever gear gives me a higher DPS, then total life, then protection. Its just working out that in Normal all the other stats are pointless thus far. right click into a crowd and start mashing 1-3, save 4 for the rares.
Haven't used the auction house yet, or bought or crafted anything in town. Although I am leveling them up as I can. I break down the magical items, and sell the rest, and they aren't worth anywhere near the gold they were worth in D2, although gold drops are far more common in D3 so that balances out.
