Thread: The pictures thread

That sounded like it could be completely benign, depending on the rest of the privacy policy. So I went to look at it ... and couldn't find the section you quoted *at all*. Did you pull that directly from the page you linked to?

We all know the distinction between the cartoon and what data use policy. That's Facebook covering it's ass for using Rackspace or building the Like button.

The cartoon said, "I give your private information to companies for money." The implication is that Facebook has some unique private information that users never voluntarily input or was somehow scraped (a la Wikileaks), and its business model is based on selling that information to a third party.

EDIT: Just saw this was on another page. I also can't find that part of the policy.

the like button could easily be seen as gathering information users consider private. we already covered how it works, for users that are logged in or out of the service (facebook even has a patent for this end), and it appears damn near everywhere, and you don't know until its to late.

It looks like the link doesn't work directly in conjunction with whatever they're using to display the sections you click, so a better link to it would be here: http://www.facebook.com/full_data_use_policy under the heading "How we use the information we receive".

The words you shared were cold transactions that bring me to curse what you've done

I work on the book bus tomorrow, so I put this on the whiteboard at work today, since no one is going to be seeing me until next week.

Ya know, Draco....some of those 20 year olds "wanting everything" in 2011 are also Iraq or Afghanistan War Veterans. The 20 year olds in 1944 "giving everything" was due to it being a World War. Even civilians were "giving it their all" and nearly everything they had. In WWII there was less targeted weaponry and technology, and also less advanced field medicine. Soldiers died in droves.

In some ways, those who died in WWII had an easier way out, buried as heroes with medals, fighting something they could understand....especially after the bombing of Pearl Harbor. Compare that to 2011 vets who come home without arms or legs, burned beyond recognition, or with crippling PTSD, trying to find rehab healthcare....and also can't find a job or resume their roles in society. For a war they can't explain.

Sorry 'bout the tangent in the pictures thread. I felt it was needed, to put things in context.

^^I know. I just agree with the general message of the photo, but I realise that there are those out there who have come back from places like Iraq, Afghanistan, with no job prospects. There was a more clear message and purpose in WWII, you knew what you were fighting for, it was either that or you die and let the enemy win, these days the purpose is about as clear as the river running through my city (this would be a good time to re-post that Huxley vs Orwell image).

Decoy, I like the cut of your jib.... so to speak. Your choice of words were awfully close to what I was thinking as I read that inane drivel GGT posted, however this is the picture thread so a picture it shall be... (though clearly a picture of words).

Now to move onto better things - today was a picture perfect spring day in paradise which moved me to post a pic of my local Beach - Cottesloe (or Cott as it is more commonly known). Its totally fucking awesome. (except when the white pointers try to eat you then it is slightly less awesome but far more exhilarating).

The following piccy is of a wallet - but no ordinary wallet... actually that's bullshit, it IS an ordinary wallet but that is not the thing that makes it interesting!

It belonged to a local fellow named Jim Moran and it was returned to his home in Wagin, Western Australia this week, that may not seem so special since wallets do tend to get handed in when folks find them but this is worth noting.

Jim Moran (farmer & keen footballer in civilian life) was a WW2 pilot flying a mission to attack the German city of Leipzig when his aircraft was shot down over Netherlands coast on February 20, 1944. Jim's body was never found, yet the wallet was found months later by a fisherman in perfect condition and he kept it for all these years. The fisherman recently passed away and his family handed the wallet to the Texel Island Aviation Museum and thanks to some good luck and good will it arrived back home (with Jim's sister Kaye) after all these years.

Kaye was 11 when her big brother was killed, she has now learned much more about how and where he died and thanks to the Aviation Museum she has regained a family treasure along the way.

Am I weird in the way that I actually like this kind of weather?
When the stars threw down their spears
And watered heaven with their tears:
Did he smile his work to see?
Did he who made the lamb make thee?
