Have you seen True Grit? Bridges character in True Grit couldn't get much further from "The Dude"... grim but good movie.

He was also good in Starman (which I recommended in another thread ), IronMan and Crazy Heart - among others...

Local pub has a film night fortnightly.

    Went along to see Senna.

V good. Though I have always been an avid F1 fan, I wasn't aware of half the behind-the-scenes shenanigans that went on. The rivalry between Le Professeur; Alain Prost, and Senna was well known, but I didn't know the animosity ran quite as deep as it did. One of Prost's quotes; "I wanted to punch him in the fucking face". There was certainly no love lost.

F1 politics are always intriguing, then as now. Balestre, the FISA president in those days, was it seems, a fairly corrupt individual, often swaying things in favour of Prost.

All in all a fascinating bio-documentary.

Netflix is streaming a documentary called Burzynsky, Cancer is Serious Business. It was interesting to say the least. It showed a doctor who claimed to have a 30% success rate with curing all forms of cancer in all age range of patients with no significant or long-term side-effects. Even though he has passed Phase II FDA Clinical trials with his product, he claims the FDA is slowing, and intentionally suppressing his cure, which he's been using in an independant practice for more than 20 years. Check it out, and tell me what you think.

Your Highness failed both my high hopes and desperately low expectations. Conan was worse :s the original still feels firmly rooted in exciting sword & sorcery fantasy. The remake feels rooted in nothing but mindless greed and incidental rights to the name. So soulless, these two movies my sniffly day sucked

Conan was horrible, it indeed had no soul at all.

This week I saw 'Don't be affraid in the dark', which was ok-ish but for the fact that they didn't seem able to choose between horror or scary children's movie. If I had children I wouldn't have taken them to this movie though.

And then of course Drive, Ryan Gosling is really an incredible actor. I absolutely loved this movie. There were some people who left the theatre before it really got going but they really missed out on something good. A bit of a film noir and no happy endings, but damn.

I started watching BSG (I know it's not a movie) but just finished the two part mini-sereis labeled Episode 1 & 2 on netflx (it's streamable) they're 1.5 hours each. It was interesting I'd recommend it basically terminator combined with Star Trek being a bit more graphic than Star Trek but still focusing on moral dilemmas and questions. Underlying theme being is humanity worth anything, and the underlying answer being yes and it's because of our capacity for love.

That belongs in Teevee sucks, and I seriously doubt there are people left who haven't watched that series, on this forum that is.

The Thing , felt like a remake of 3 movies rolled into one. Not extremely good, not extremely bad. Let's call it before bed entertainment.

Reading up on it tells me it wasn't so much a remake as an attempt at a prequel.
    Congratulations America

I think I may have seen it back in 1982, but I have the vaguest memories of it. Which at first made me think that this was a remake rather than a prequel.

I'm watching it a second time, just on the off chance you had a point

But turns out, once again, you just have god-awful taste! The world is right once more.

Unless Braidsmaids is some kind of gay porno satire of the film, in which case I cannot comment

Instead of love there will be fear and distrust, instead of surrender there will be submission. Contact will be replaced with isolation, and joy with shame. Hope will cease to exist as a concept. The Earth will be covered with steel and concrete. There will be an electronic policeman in every head. Your children will be born in chains, live only to serve, and die in anguish and ignorance.

    Killers

Had extremely low expectations, almost dreaded seeing it (have put it off for ages) but it was fun! Easy viewing. Kutcher isn't the most amazing actor but they had great chemistry and a pretty funny script to work with. Boy-friendly date-movie

Cowboys & Aliens was also okay, although Olivia Wilde and that damned indian ruined it a little.

Saw Limitless. They had an interesting concept. It's not particular novel, but one that I hadn't seen played out on screen before. Unfortunately, the writers didn't seem to really know what to do with it. There was some unusual camera work, kinda felt like they were trying to be the next Fight Club. The ending was kinda disappointing, I think they accidentally mistook the subplot for the main plot. It was still decent though, and not a bad way to kill a copule hours.

I saw that the other day, I thought it was a pretty good comedy

The whistleblower A stomach turning movie, not because of the gore, but because you know that what you are seeing is what they could reasonably put in a movie trying to tell us what's going on in the world without it becoming obscene to the point that the message gets lost. They did a fine job describing human trafficking in post-war Bosnia. I was angry leaving the cinema after having found out that really NONE of the people involved in selling and abusing young girls were prosecuted. Because as employees of international organisations or private military companies were under diplomatic immunity.

    Watching American Beauty right now

I remember first seeing this movie when I was, I'm not sure, 15? The anti-establishment message got to me, as did the silly bull-shit about beauty the teenage boy sells to the naive girl.

Now, it's more a film about people who are all very profoundly unhappy, and try to work it out, to remove that unhappiness with whatever paradigm shift meets them first. For the teenagers, it's more acceptable in its way, because they're young and clueless. The adults, the fucked up parental figures? Their disintegration and alienation from their children is...so sad. The total lack of communication, how that festered up into years of unhappiness for all of them.

All the same, Lester's revelation at the end is still somehow uplifting for me. I dunno if that's just the thanatos in me though.

Went to the opening of the international short film festival Leuven, they showed six shorts. A lovely animation film (stop motion), 'oh willy' about a guy with mother and nudity issues, quite lovely and it looked stunning, too (world premiere!). L'accordeur (the piano tuner), a french film about a piano tuner who pretends to be blind and stumbles into a murder. Funny, well acted, very good (which explains why it eton the audience award at clermont-ferrand ). A non-narrative film about a plane, by nicolas provost (i forgot the film name..). Non narrative film is not my cup of tea, but it was nice, and a bit soothing in a weird way. Los Malinas, spanish/belgian film about a girl who visits her grandfather who was presumed dead for over 50 years. Awful start, but after that it was good i really got into the story and it was touching. The film really made you see both sides, with their flaws (world premiere,i think). An irish short called The Heist, funny but not well made or original, and two of the three actors sucked, about a guy who wants to rob a bank with two idiot friends. it did take only 13 days from conception to finished product, which is impressive. And finally an animation called guard dog, which had a fun story. The special thing was that it was cut into 75 pieces which were each animated by a different animator, so there were 75 different styles. It worked well, was quite entertaining!

And the afterparty was good, too!

We need to talk about Kevin A very strong movie about a mother (Tilda Swinton) and her sociopath son (Ezra Miller). He destroys her life, and the big question is why?.

I've seen a few movies recently. First, regarding Cowboys and Aliens, I liked it but the director really flubbed the cutting in the big battle scene. It made no sense at all. Film was creepy, really pushing the PG-13 rating, IMO.

    Recently watched:

Limitless -- fun film, intersting take on geinius, drug engineering, and mind. I recommend.

Horrible Bosses -- fun movie, very funny too. Didn't recognize Jennifer Aniston right away. Very different role for her and well done. I recommend.

Thor -- Not bad. Formulaic as hell. Good fluff. I recommend if you're not interested in a challenge.

Captain America -- Liked it. Fun movie. Sad that he couldn't get drunk. I recommend.

Cherry -- surprisingly good drama, wasn't expecting much. Funny parts, nothing too deep, but engaging. I recommend.

Troll Hunter -- loved it, despite the sub-titles. I highly recommen.

Battle: Los Angeles -- sweet effects, fun small unit combat, several insufferably stupid premises, stupid snatch-victory-from-the-jaws-of-defeat ending. I do not recommend.

Skyline -- it got terrible reviews and I only watched it b/c I was bored and it was available on Netflix streaming. While I admit fast forwarding through much of the drama parts, formulaic characters I didn't care about much, I must to say I was pleasantly surprised. This film has the best alien invasion premise I've ever seen, bar none. And the alien's bio-nano-mechanical technological mix was delicious and believable. And the ending was perfect -- soooo many amateur reviewers on Netflix hated that ending, but I thought it was, to repeat myself, perfect. If you love sci-fi and you hated Independance Day, you should watch this film. Minor recommend for normal people, high recommend for sci-fi fans.

Prince of Persia: Sands of Time -- what an absolutely horrible film. Formulaic, poorly acted, poorly directed, poorly cut. I didn't bother to finish it. Avoid at all costs.

Love and Other Drugs -- pretty sexy film. Worth watching just to see Anne Hathaway naked so much. The goofy younger brother comic sub-plot falls flat due mostly to poor casting, but otherwise the film was better than expected. Later I read this film is based on the memoir of an actual big pharma drug salesman. I recommend.

Source Code -- well directed, well acted, fun concept, a new very loose take on Groundhog Day. Worth watching despite happy ending snatched from the jaws of plausibility. I recommend.

Win Win -- great film, always like Paul Giomatti's work, story broke a few formulas. I highly recommend.

Super -- a darker, stranger version of Kick Ass. Pretty well done, good writing, direction, and acting, though Ellen Page was a little over the top in a couple scenes. Highly entertaining in others. I recommend.

X-Men: First Class -- this is the best of the X-Men films, by far. Not just fun but also thoughtful and morally complex. I recommend.

Sucker Punch -- visually very cool. Lots of great action. Plot a bit vague/unnecessarily complex and not very satisfying. Didn't care much for the ending. Minor recommend, only to see the interesting sights. If you're not into that, avoid.
