Thread: Change We Can Believe In!

Default Change We Can Believe In!

...or add any other ditty about Hope.

  2. #2
Loki's denial of reatilty regard for hope is, in itself, a denial of reality. Sometimes people do hope in hopeless situations, I would never deny that. But hope is not relevant to the odds of success, its function is to keep people alive through difficulty. I think the ability to hope and gain strength from hope is probably an inherited survival trait. Hope feels good, its a motivator. We should embrace it and use it.
    The Rules
Copper- behave toward others to elicit treatment you would like (the manipulative rule)
Gold- treat others how you would like them to treat you (the self regard rule)
Platinum - treat others the way they would like to be treated (the PC rule)

Loki thinks hope is why a horse chases a carrot on a stick.
Faith is Hope (see Loki's sig for details)
If hindsight is 20-20, why is it so often ignored?

The tie in for why people still follow a god of their choosing is to strong to ignore....

In the crudest sense, I guess. I rather think what's going on in people's heads is a little more sophisticated.

I think OG means that believing in (a) god gives one hope.

Oh. Ok. Yeah. Hope for justice. Hope for supernatural aid in your struggles. Hope for an afterlife. I was thinking more about secular hope. People hope a lot and don't necessarily appeal to god.

Hope for the Best, Plan for the Worst

That's a good one. Especially for Disaster PreparedNess.

The point is that if you have a solid reason for believing what you do, then you're not relying on hope. I can hope to get a good grade, but that won't make that any more likely than if I didn't hope. On the other hand, if I know that I put a lot of effort into something, then I have a good reason to believe that I'll get a good grade.
Hope is the denial of reality

  10. #10
That's trust or confidence. Both need a touch of hopeful thinking.

  11. #11
No, you're basing your expectations on concrete events, not on your desire to see a certain outcome.

While you make a sensible remark, it doesn't fit with a denial of reality.

Sure it does. If you had solid reasons for believing that your preferred outcome is likely, then you wouldn't need to hope for it. Hoping implies that you don't have a good reason for expecting that outcome, which means you really are denying reality.

No, you're trusting that your education lines up with the test. There's some Hope in there. Hope you don't end up with the stomach flu on day of test. Best efforts do NOT always line up with personal expectations or concrete events. Luck is always there, luck and hope are companions.

No, it's not hope, it's randomness. I could study for the same test 100 times, and get a positive result 90 of the times. The expectation is based on solid evidence, but we realize that the result isn't a certainty. I'm not "hoping" for a good result if I know that the things I did give me a 90% of achieving it. "Hoping" for that result entails not doing those things to start with.
Hope is the denial of reality

  16. #16
No, what you're Hoping for is that some random event does NOT affect your preparedness or planning.

  17. #17
Except that the randomness is included in the expectation.
Hope is the denial of reality

  18. #18
Really? Hope can also be directed toward others, ya know. Like good wishes against any random negative event. You make it sound like hope is a statistical fallacy instead of a natural human emotion.

I HOPE you do well in school, land a great job you enjoy, find love with a mate, and live happily ever after.

  19. #19
And does that hope increase my chances of doing those things?
Hope is the denial of reality

There are always circumstances outside of your influence.

And how do you fit that in with: solid reasons for believing that your preferred outcome is likely?

Do you have solid reason to believe the outcome of a random process is preferred? If you're playing a game and have to roll an even number on a dice, how do you factor that into your solid reasons, and how do you reason it's denying the reality that the preferred outcome has a 50% chance of occurring?

Hope leads to optimism, optimism leads to happiness, happiness leads to the good side.

Belief will never be solid. It is just... belief...
If you do a real effort and you do rain dance during a week, you may have strong reasons to believe it will rain.
But in the end it is just belief.
If you study you have no way to know if your method was effective or not. You are gambling and having hope.

    It also leads to disaster.
When they launched shuttle Challenger, they were optimistic.

In the other side, lack of hope leads to depression, which will garantee that the outcome will never be the one you wish because you are not doing anything.

That's the premise that doesn't fit. This is not necessarily true.

I think there is a misunderstanding - or maybe - a different understanding of what hope is in Loki vs. you (and I).

Is anything truely random? Random is the word we use to describe things our brains are too feeble to predict based on inputs. Or is it things with too complex a set of causes for our prodigous brains to parse? Which is a more hopeful scenario? Which denies reality?

As you say, it's not important whether it's truly random in this context.

If you enter all the variables into throwing a dice in the laws of nature, it will tell you what you'll throw.

I'd say denying hope is denying reality. And that Loki has been taking too many stats classes.

It just goes to show that 'truisms' like that are the absolute bonkers.

I was in a discussion once about whether God existed, which led to whether the devil exists, and I got the argument back: "The greatest trick the Devil ever pulled was convincing humanity he didn't exist".

Which reminds me, I have been looking for a FireFox plug-in which will allow me to punch people in the face over the internet.

    Truisms, hmm.

I was considering a new thread about Love and War. Love of War. War as an Addiction. Something hippie-ish. Beginning with the movie Hurt Locker. Would that belong in General Chat or D & D?

    Please don't punch me Ziggy.....
