Sounds like an NYC thing. Gyms around here, even/especially the "big ones" aren't like Dreadnaught's describing his as.

Though, if I do post a found item note, it does tend to get removed really quickly, so maybe they're not that different... although, I guess that could be due to the mention of oral sex as an acceptable reward.

It's large, cheap, has good equipment and it's conveniently located. I could go to a fuzzier and more expensive place nearby, but I didn't like the equipment or the 150% price increase when I did a one month trial membership. My gym isn't a terrible place and the other gym-goers are friendly. But there are just some/many things you wouldn't trust the staff with.

This 'good-faith' effort only appeared after people began calling you on your decision to keep it given that handing it in to the staff was (according to you) not an option.

So my question was more about the morality of that, as I saw it as an all-things-being-equal thing due to the particular nature of the staff there.

I don't know when Moffrika gave up on registration of cars but the average person would have to make a serious effort to claim a car as found where I live. That would be especially hard if the same car has been reported stolen by the actual owner.

    Flixy is right =

reporting is ownership after one year (or the good being returned to the rightfull owner of course)
not reporting means ownership after 20 years

In both cases if you decide to be the keeper (not owner) of the good you are charged with it's upkeep (for which you can demand a reasonable renumeration if the upkeep would incurr costs).

The advantage of reporting is that you are more likely to own the good outright after a mere waiting period of one year.

We take that 'keeper' part rather serious, in the sence that he who keeps something is not necessarily its owner.

My God, your self-righteousness knows no bounds. Unless of course you missed the part where I didn't know one could just e-mail Amazon and they would send a box to ship it back.

The good-faith effort was opening the thing and trying to figure out who owned it. I wasn't aware of another option until I posted.

But, assuming Amazon had no system to return the device, you would still [ludicrously] give the machine to the staff without any hesitation?

You don't have a public "Lost & Found" office?

even if the staff were as dishonest as you have made yourself believe... the police, all police, have a lost and found.

Alright folks, pitchforks and torches away! Like Frankenstein's Monster, Dreadnaught is merely misunderstood. He wasn't going to opportunistically keep something that didn't belong to him, he just didn't know how to return it.

But, assuming Amazon had no system to return the device, you would still [ludicrously] give the machine to the staff without any hesitation?
    Well there is always:

    1) Telling the staff that you found a lost Kindle, and leaving your phone number/email address.
    2) Posting a flyer. So fucking what if they don't have a bulletin board. Post it outside.
    3) If the Gym Staff is as unsavory as you claim they are, ask if they have a member named Mindy, and if they do, any contact information, or when she works out.

Thats 5 minutes of thought...maybe. Also, like we've pointed out numerous times, even if the Gym Staff have a .001% chance of actually giving Mindy back her Kindle, thats still better than the 0% chance she has of getting it back if its with Dreadnaught in Europe on vacation.

You missed my lost and found iPad? After 3 days I had pretty much given up on ever getting it back. And then I got an email I could pick it up.
    Congratulations America

I know, right... thinking you don't have the right to anything you can lay your mitts on that isn't either a) nailed down b) guarded. What a prick!

Amazing. I think I just teared up a bit there.

I'm not sure why you having the Kindle is any more ludicrous than one of the staff having it? It's pretty funny you're calling me self-righteous when you think it's such an outrageous prospect that the gym staff might do exactly what you were going to do.

Anyway, in your place I would not have done anything. Without a viable way of getting it back to the owner and handing it in apparently not being an option, the best thing to do is to leave it where it was. At least then there is a chance the owner or someone who knows the owner might have picked it up. The person on the bike next to you would even have been a better person to take it, at least they knew what the owner looked like. Alternatively, just give it to the police or something.

The newspapers around here also post lost and found ads in the classifieds for free, and then there is craigslist as well.

Maybe it's all the self-righteous twatery. There's a lot of it and it's pretty vocal.

If my lack of faith in humanity needed reaffirmation, that's why I'd pick this thread to do so.

I did miss that Hazir's iPad was returned. I guess there is a small glimmer of hope left for the world, however very faint.

Hope is the denial of reality
In the future, the Berlin wall will be a mile high, and made of steel. You too will be made to crawl, to lick children's blood from jackboots. There will be no creativity, only productivity. Instead of love there will be fear and distrust, instead of surrender there will be submission. Contact will be replaced with isolation, and joy with shame. Hope will cease to exist as a concept. The Earth will be covered with steel and concrete. There will be an electronic policeman in every head. Your children will be born in chains, live only to serve, and die in anguish and ignorance.
The universe we observe has precisely the properties we should expect if there is, at bottom, no design, no purpose, no evil, no good, nothing but blind, pitiless indifference.
