Hope is the denial of reality
Obligatory Conan O'Brien reference
In the future, the Berlin wall will be a mile high, and made of steel. You too will be made to crawl, to lick children's blood from jackboots. There will be no creativity, only productivity. Instead of love there will be fear and distrust, instead of surrender there will be submission. Contact will be replaced with isolation, and joy with shame. Hope will cease to exist as a concept. The Earth will be covered with steel and concrete. There will be an electronic policeman in every head. Your children will be born in chains, live only to serve, and die in anguish and ignorance.
The universe we observe has precisely the properties we should expect if there is, at bottom, no design, no purpose, no evil, no good, nothing but blind, pitiless indifference.
Wow, they really are twins.![]()

Hope is the denial of reality
So, first school period of the day: Physics with my 7-graders. They're collaborating nicely and indeed getting where I want them to get - when it knocks on the door.
It's the facility manager who insists that we leave the room immediately without actually telling me why. So, we all get up and I get my class into the adjacent room (which means that due to the hubbub, my chances of reaching my goal for this period have just been effectively shot to hell), and now he tells me why I had to leave:
We have a (small) gas leak.
Which he detected yesterday afternoon. Which means, as they closed off the main gas valve immediately, there was no real immediate danger.
He then berated me for going into this room at all - he had posted a note!
Yes, a note. A white note, on a white door, half the size of a postcard, which only said something I'd summarize as: "Something is broken!" I mean, if I had actually seen that note I wouldn't really have connected it with some sort of lethal danger. Not to mention that this room has two doors, there was only one note and we entered the room through the other door.
My other colleagues had fun as well - since the gas line was closed (and no one was told about it beforehand), one friend of mine gave her class a good telling-off because she thought that they were pranking her with the gas valves at their seats (those gas valves only can be activated if they are all closed when trying to open the room's main gas valve). And because she had designed her lesson to be a students' experiment, her lesson was effectively destroyed as well.
Mind, it's not as if we have something like an email distribution system. Or several monitors showing important news.

Well, let me show you one aspect of my school which give a pretty good representation of the whole:
We have screens in strategic positions which tell both teachers and pupils which teacher is ill/in further training/on maternity leave/on the face of the moon. It also tells us which teacher, due to those other teachers being absent, now has to step in for what teacher in what class at what time.
However, it doesn't tell us where.
Couple this with the fact that the school has three distinct and only loosely connected buildings, and you're sometimes reminded of the Benny-Hill-Theme.

I'm not sure that I'd honor this school with that name
Let me put it this way: It's located in a town called Salzgitter. However, whenever I tell someone where my school is located, their first reaction is invariably: "Oh, you're teaching in Salzghetto?"
I wish I was joking.

Co-workers.
I think mine are smoking crack and eating lead paint chips. Or, knowing their intelligence levels, perhaps they're smoking lead paint chips and eating crack.

Read about that, but couldn't find any source that wasn't an anti-islam website, so I didn't know if it was actually trur.well, that's probably right, but even so, it's still.a right people have. It’s unfortunate that
some people use the First Amendment to
deliberately provoke others. I don’t think
that’s what our forefathers intended. I think
our forefathers intended to use the First
Amendment so we can speak with our mind,
not to piss off other people and cultures –
which is what you did.
More generally speaking though, is provocation an accepted (legal) excuse for assault? E.g. is an assault punished less, or not at all, if the victim provoked the assault? As in barfights, etc.
Another petty tyrant in judges robes who needs to be thrown off the bench. If you give me a moment to prepare, I can act surprised for your benefit.
May or may not be a mitigating factor (lesser charge, lesser sentence), but that said, much of my misspent youth was spent provoking people into throwing the first punch so I could legally stomp them. Generally speaking "he pissed me off, so I hit him" is not a valid defense, though you'd expect it to be punished less harshly than "I hit him for no reason whatsoever."
I guess the "general case" for assaults is that you have a reason why you beat the crap out of someone, such as provocation, so it's not really a mitigating factor, though not having any reason at all for assaulting someone is a pretty big aggravating factor.

It's not right; read Thomas Paine. Regardless, the judge is basically admitting to disregarding the first amendment (which he admits applies here) for the sake of cultural understanding (and of course the culture that needs understanding is his own). It's a gross abuse of authority and shows a complete lack of understanding of the Constitution. I can't see the guy getting reappointed/reelected, but I would like to see him disbarred just for the example it would set.

To be fair, they're also a family of lawyers, so the fact that they make money suing people who assault them isn't all that surprising, nor do those who assault them generally suffer from harsh criminal penalties because, well, they have it coming.
Moral of that story is: if you hit a lawyer, make sure he dies before he can file suit.![]()

I've conducted a small facebook survey. Of 455 Swedish med-students,
222 are first-born (192 with younger siblings and 30 without)
and 139 are youngest children. 74 are middle children and then there are a few odd answers. Birth order effects are very interesting, wonder if there's any point to doing significance tests.

How would you control for things like willingness to be on Facebook etc? Genuine interest

All I'm saying is, I'm not on Facebook, and I'm most likely above average intelligence. Or at any rate, I am a data point in the phys grad student population.
Although ostensibly would-be doctors are less people-averse than I am. Maybe those who want to go into research... Hmm.

Well as you yourself acknowledge you are also somewhat of an odd bird, like most people on this forum
That said, these findings are also borne out by the bureau of statistics, who had access to this info for every single Swedish citizen (albeit without statistical testing). Eldest/only children are generally more likely to study past highschool. Trend seemed most pronounced for engineers. It's not new knowledge, sociologists have been mumbling about it for a long time, but it's fun to see for yourself and to speculate about causes![]()

Okay, since we're on the subject; which way would I count? I have a step-sibling who moved out of the shared house before I was 3 years old I think. Am I an only child or the second child for these purposes? Nature vs nurture? Does it matter that we only share one parent?
