Default If you thought about suicide, think twice...

In the past, a cousin who was like a brother committed suicide when I was a teen.
It led me to dig out about the problem.

Some years ago, at AtariCC forum a kid said he was going to do that.
I responded and gave him a different way to see his situation.
Later he said I had saved his life.

So if you ever think about suicide, think twice. There is a choice.
Depression is just a temporary biochemical malfunction of our brain that makes our perception, thoughts and feelings to malfunction and create the illusion of an ugly and sad reality.

Star Trek actor's son found dead

In a statement he said that Andrew had given away his belongings and had not been taking his medication. He urged others suffering from depression to seek help.

"If you are one of those people who can't handle it any more, know people are out there who really care before you make that final decision," Koenig, 71, said. "Talk to somebody."
Now that AtariCC is closed, I wanted to open this thread, dedicated to save people from suicide.
The only true reality is a happy one. But sometimes, just like our stomach aches when you eat something that is not appropriate, our brain can also have temporary malfunctions when we have the wrong toughts or views of reality.

An ugly and sad reality is not an illusion for many who face depression. Far from it

Depression is an inordinately complex area. There are no quick diagnoses and certainly no quick fixes.

Suicide's a waste. Generaly. Was it a Kubrick film that said: "the one thing the dead know is that its better to be alive?" Not sure that's true in all cases or in the strictest sence of dead people knowing anything at all.
    The Rules
Copper- behave toward others to elicit treatment you would like (the manipulative rule)
Gold- treat others how you would like them to treat you (the self regard rule)
Platinum - treat others the way they would like to be treated (the PC rule)

Brain functions determine our perception of reality.
Antidepressive medication causes biochemical changes, turning off depression.
If depression was not biochemical, pills should not work.
So when you feel depressed, feel confident about the fact that it is a biochemical cheat of your brain.
Your perception and thoughts and feelings are the output of a biochemical brain process.
Since it is not working properly, it is a malfunction.

Depression is temporary in the sense that no one spends 100% of time depressed.

#1. Of course its all biochemical. That's all we are.

#2. Have you ever had real depression? Knowing its a "cheat of your brain" is not comforting.

#3. Most depression is episodic and people return to "normal" spontaneously. The neat trick the US pharm industry pulled off was getting people onto anti-depressants and claiming their recovery is due to the pills. Then the customer stays on the pills forever even though they likely don't need them anymore. Yay for psycho crutches! Its really only a very few that need to be on pills long term. But hey, Big Money! It can't be bad if it makes you rich, right?

Ok, if your best friend isn't talking to you and hates you, you broke up with you girlfriend because of your parents, your GPA went from a 4.0 to a 3.0, you hit your mom, and do nothing other than sit in your room all day, isn't suicide better?

Nope, because all of those things can be resolved with time.

    Death can't.
All those moments lost in time... like tears in the rain

    Fuck off, Alpha Romeo
In the future, the Berlin wall will be a mile high, and made of steel. You too will be made to crawl, to lick children's blood from jackboots. There will be no creativity, only productivity. Instead of love there will be fear and distrust, instead of surrender there will be submission. Contact will be replaced with isolation, and joy with shame. Hope will cease to exist as a concept. The Earth will be covered with steel and concrete. There will be an electronic policeman in every head. Your children will be born in chains, live only to serve, and die in anguish and ignorance.
The universe we observe has precisely the properties we should expect if there is, at bottom, no design, no purpose, no evil, no good, nothing but blind, pitiless indifference.

I like how the popular anti-depressant adds include a disclaimer that they "may cause an increase in feelings of depression or suicidal thoughts." WTF.
Faith is Hope (see Loki's sig for details)
If hindsight is 20-20, why is it so often ignored?

In the distant past I had the following:
    1.My fiancee was unfaithful
    2.Lost job
    3.Economic problems
    4.One friend betrayed me
5.Harassed at work (in 2 different jobs)

It is very sad, I can tell. What happened later was:
    1.I got another girl
    2.I got another job
3.Reduced expenses, found a job that was not my career
4.I enjoyed being alone, learning more about myself.
5.In one job, harassers are now in jail because they were commiting fraud. The other one: I started to work for a customer of the company, they lost money. The moral is "do not mistreat or abuse anyone, unless you know he will never be your customer or boss in the future".

    No. Duh.

    Full metal jacket.

Mages examples are the worst examples of reasons for someone to commit suicide ever. Might as well kill yourself because you didnt get a shiny red bike for christmas.
"Son," he said without preamble, "never trust a man who doesn't drink, because he's probably a self-righteous sort, a man who thinks he knows right from wrong all the time. Some of them are good men, but in the name of goodness, they cause most of the suffering in the world. They're the judges, the meddlers. And, son, never trust a man who drinks but refuses to get drunk. They're usually afraid of something deep down inside, either that they're a coward or a fool or mean and violent. You can't trust a man who's afraid of himself. But sometimes, son, you can trust a man who occasionally kneels before a toilet. The chances are that he is learning something about humility and his natural human foolishness, about how to survive himself. It's damned hard for a man to take himself too seriously when he's heaving his guts into a dirty toilet bowl.

Because things don't always work the same for everyone.

    What Bitter said.

<Ever seen a tv ad for Lunesta? The list of possible side effects is long and scary sounding. My brother-in-law's brother said out loud to our group, "Now, who would take that medicine with that kind of list of possible side effects?" and chortled. I said "Someone like me, that's who." He shut up pretty fast.>

Presumably 50% is better than 0%.
Hope is the denial of reality
