    republican national convention.

You wouldn't believe the insane amount of money this city has dumped into the area surrounding where this thing is going to go down. Lining streets with $2500 palm trees, repaving roads that were paved last year, the security training and emergancy response training...it all seems so over the top.
Craziest part is that the roads they fixed, and overfixed, all lead away from the downtown Tampa area, and even the Mayor has suggested that it would be a good time for locals to take a vacation up north. The "economic benefit" is going to fall flatter than when we hosted the superbowl.

Not that the security and emergency response training seems unneeded. The city will drown in protesters, and the ron paul supporters, and there are stories of the anarchists coming out (targeting the film crews), and then we have the entitled delegates driving all over the fucking place.

Library is going to fall into the expected no go zone around the convention, so we are closing. A completely empty building thats got more 2 story windows than brick walls... I'm half expecting the collection to not be here when we get back.

It's the city footing the bill for this, not the 'Pubbies?

The convention party pays for most of the convention costs, and most of the local security man hours, but that doesn't include the upgrades the police needed to handle the volume, or the training, and it doesn't cover a lot of the temp facelift the area is seeing. The DoJ gave the city a grant for $50 million to cover technology and equipment for security, as well as for paying, feeding and housing the 3,000 law enforcement officials from around the state who will be working with the Tampa Police Department during the convention.

Last I read the city was tapping into federal funds to cover the insurance for the event.

Yes, but often it's a mixed bag in terms of economic benefit. The Olympics are a good example of this - enormous expense that ends up shutting down most of the city's economy (ex-tourism) for the duration. The only real reason to host something big is to raise your city's public image.

Amusingly, Chicago was 'awarded' the G8 and NATO summits, probably as a sop to Rahm Emanuel and Chicago's increasing desire to be seen as a global city. Instead, the protests shut down downtown for days. Amusingly, the protesters were upset that the cost of the preparations was so high that it crowded out other priorities (IIRC mental health treatment was one particular gripe)... when most of the security preparations could have been far cheaper had there not been protests.

Tim - In recent years, party conventions in the US have been pretty tame affairs - designated 'protest zones' and a sanitized area where the actual convention takes place. But cities are still terrified of a repeat of the 1968 DNC, so they go overboard in preparations.

True. It's actually not too small, either. Metropolitan area of half a million or so IIRC.

This is still the wrong one though! Makes it more understandable to make the mistake (while still stupid), but some of the other ones I cannot understand how you could screw that up. If you don't know it, look it up before putting it on tv!

I feel like I saw somewhere that a lot of those are just photoshopped. Not that I'm really going to under (over?) estimate the TV news networks.

    I noticed.

    You're here?

Fella in the office was telling me that it's all due to a temporary shift in the jet stream which has moved it over Spain and the Pyrenees, giving us all the low pressure and crappy weather. Not sure if it's true but sounds plausible.

  22. #2782
Yep. Always fun to check the weather forecast in the early afternoon, when the temperature in London (at noon) is 5-10C lower than it is in Illinois (at 6 AM).

In the future, the Berlin wall will be a mile high, and made of steel. You too will be made to crawl, to lick children's blood from jackboots. There will be no creativity, only productivity. Instead of love there will be fear and distrust, instead of surrender there will be submission. Contact will be replaced with isolation, and joy with shame. Hope will cease to exist as a concept. The Earth will be covered with steel and concrete. There will be an electronic policeman in every head. Your children will be born in chains, live only to serve, and die in anguish and ignorance.

This is bayshore, the main 4-5 lane road into and out of downtown. Connects directly with the convection center that is going to house the RNC. This is one of the roads they repaved, then repaved again, and where they are attempting to plant those $2500 trees. This is Bayshore, flooded after being skirted by tropical storm Debbie.

Not shown, the insane amount of trash the bay spit back out, onto the sidewalk and street.

Fun fact, the RNC is being held within a week of the peak of hurricane season
