Thread: Might and Magic Kingdoms

    Default Might and Magic Kingdoms

Our joint attempt to play Astro Empires seems to have crumbled, so I'm proposing an alternative game that has many advantages over Astro Empires, but also a large disadvantage.

For some basic info: the game is based on the Heroes of Might and Magic franchise. You start by choosing type of kingdom, like Castle, Inferno (demons), Necropolis (undead), and Tower (wizard). Each has its advantages and disadvantages when it comes to troop strength, magic, and economic buildings. You also get a hero, which level up and could be assigned a decent amount of abilities. You can get more of each over time, but it's progressively more expensive. Once in the game, you do a tutorial that explains most aspects of the game and rewards you for each step. Each city has land surrounding, which include mines and wilderness. You have to kill monsters in both, while the former also give you a constant source of gold and other resources. Assuming you're able to get a decent amount of money/resources, you can build dwellings for higher-level creatures (and upgrade each level) as well as other speciality buildings.

There are 2 types of worlds in the game. One is P vs P, which is basically what we had in Astro Empires. After a week or so, you can attack other players and they can attack you. The other option is cooperative play, where monster dens appear on the map, and the NPC heroes from those dens attack your cities. They're quite a feat to defeat. You can also build similar dens within your city walls, and descend down many levels, getting good rewards in the process.

Given everything above, I think this game is more fun to play, while also being less tedious (every unit has a maintenance cost once you cross a certain threshold, which means you can't build too many). It's also not really feasible to control more than half a dozen castles, so you don't have to worry about looking after 9 planets. Another positive is that you get "legacy points" each time the world ends, giving you some extra stuff in the next world. The negative part of this game is the ability to "buy" things that make you stronger, therefore giving you a competitive advantage. Those things are separate from a ~$5 monthly fee that provides advantages similar to those in Astro Empires (you don't have to pay that fee, but then you get smaller queues, etc.).

    So I have two questions:

    1. Does anyone else want to play this game? I played it before for a month and it didn't get boring. I was outmatched by the NPC monster dens though, and it became too much of a hassle to fight off the monsters. This won't be a problem if there's many of us.

    2. If you do want to play, would you prefer a P vs P mode, or P vs. E (can't be attacked by other players, but can be by NPCs)? The former might make better use of a guild, but the latter would reduce the disadvantages from not buying extra stuff, and would allow you to take breaks without worrying about getting your castles destroyed.

If you do play this game, please start on the Swiss server, the Zombie Assembly 3.

If there's a few joining, I'll give it a go, although about to go on holiday for a week and won't be online much if any then but still can play either side of it. Open minded to PvE or PvP.

Always like the Might & Magic, then Heroes games.

From other thread: the last P vs. E world started on May 2. Worlds are created on a random basis, so I have no idea when the new one will start. I don't think we'd be at too much of a disadvantage though. If anything, we can figure the game out this round, and aim for a high ranking next time around.

I'm going to give it a go. Do you think PvE or PvP?

I think P vs. E due to the potential disadvantage of others starting before us. We can switch to P vs. P next round if that's what people want to do.

This site is very useful by the way: http://mmhk.jactari.info/en

And again, make sure you start in an American world: Roar of the Griffin WoT 3.

Forgot to mention that castles get bonuses if certain plots of land are within their borders, and borders expand the same way as in Civilization.

They key to fighting is that you lose 30% of the troops that fall in combat, but this number is always rounded down. So if 6 troops fall, you should lose 1.8, but this gets round down to 1. If, however, you lose 7, troops, 30% is 2.1, and you lose 2. Key numbers of troops are 6, 9, and 13 for that reason. Also, this game uses a rock, paper, scissor system, where flying troops are good against archers, archers are good against infantry, and infantry is good against flyers. There are substantial bonuses for attacking the right type of troops with the right type of troops.

What's your name in the game?

Another hint: you want to kill people with you having the least amount of troops possible. It increases the experience you gain.

Just noticed that the available servers are both player vs. player, so not much of a choice there. New cooperative (p vs. e) servers are only opening in September. I still think it's a good idea to try this out, and then start from the beginning in September if people like the game.

    Noob protection lasts 2 weeks.

Since this may be taken the wrong way, the camaraderie is fine, the game is not fun. We picked a poor game.

    Sorry.

I take it that others don't want to play?

Replying again to emphasize this: what I learned from AstroEmpires is that I rather like playing with you guys, I just didn't like that particular game and how it needed to be played to do well. You people were the best part of Astro Empires for me.

    Agreed there as well.

There's a lot of MMO's that are free to play.

Why not all try out Lord of the Rings Online, it's free to DL and play, or runes of magic.

Along a different vein there is League of Legends, or playing Diablo 3 together. Those are just some ideas though.

I think Timbuk or Minx is going to set up a Guild Wars 2 guild when that comes out. Loki just wants something to do in the meantime, I assume.

Had a look round Might and Magic this morning. Looks pretty good.

Will sign up tomorrow when I've got some time.

I've noticed that some other countries' servers do have a cooperative world open right now (Bulgaria!). So if the goal is to avoid p vs. p, that is still possible. Those worlds are probably really sparsely populated though, and have been ongoing for a long time.

Found a good one. Go to Switzerland's servers, and choose The Zombie Assembly South 3 (we'd get wiped out in 2 weeks on the p vs. p one). As I mentioned earlier, if you do well on this server, you get some carry over bonuses when the next round starts in September.

Let me know what name you choose and I'll invite you to the guild. I don't think guilds in this game have as nice a forum as in Astro Empires though.

Edit: nevermind, the forum isn't bad: http://forums-mightandmagicheroeskin...ex.php?1599641

Does the PvE play allow for any PvP at all? Á la WoW or SWToR?

Would be nice to slap other people about a bit once we're strong enough.

There are NPC towers that frequently appear to beat on. Also, there are extra tough buildings that let you get tears of asha (for winning the game) that require guild work to defeat. At this point, I doubt we'd beat on anyone in a p vs. p world. It might be an idea to start in that kind of a world when the new season starts in September.

If I did it right, my username is DrunkenNess (because I'll mostly be playing intoxicated, you see) and I think I'm in zombieville.
In the future, the Berlin wall will be a mile high, and made of steel. You too will be made to crawl, to lick children's blood from jackboots. There will be no creativity, only productivity. Instead of love there will be fear and distrust, instead of surrender there will be submission. Contact will be replaced with isolation, and joy with shame. Hope will cease to exist as a concept. The Earth will be covered with steel and concrete. There will be an electronic policeman in every head. Your children will be born in chains, live only to serve, and die in anguish and ignorance.
The universe we observe has precisely the properties we should expect if there is, at bottom, no design, no purpose, no evil, no good, nothing but blind, pitiless indifference.
