LONDON - The parents of a five-year-old girl who was raped by a teenage babysitter have attacked a judge who let the boy walk free after claiming online pornography and society was to blame...

One of my old coworkers, a FB friend now, who I once considered pretty smart has completely baffled me. She started out with the whole "organic-only" and no processed foods route, which didn't tip me off because that's a fairly popular movement and it has some positives to it. Then today she talks about doing "detox" using some liquid product and pills as a meal replacement. WHAT THE HELL! People really fall for this shit, it seems. I thought her a better person that; clearly she is going off the deep end.

I've learned that many women aren't very good at using their brain when it comes to anything relating to their weight, regardless of how smart they are on other issues.

British girls have a reputation for being ugly

  11. #2171
It's weird, because I also noticed this even before I heard there was a reputation. You live there, right Timbuk2? Are most of them really that ugly? o_O

I didn't mean it from that point of view. I meant that most of the Middle Eastern states have terrible relations with Syria at the moment.

I suspect it's just because it works like a rotation in most of the regional groupings, and the Middle East group in the UN that decides on the nominations does not consider the HRC to be particularly high on their priority list? It's also possible it was decided on before this whole mess started, I don't know.

  17. #2177
Past decisions can be changed. I can't imagine this looks good on the street for the Arab regimes who are publicly against Syria.

Never underestimate the desire to be culturally relevant. Whether it's based on dress size or BMI, women are especially vulnerable to anything that hints to connections between health and beauty. Take a look at how stores have laid out their aisles. Beauty (cosmetic) items are positioned close to entrances, vitamins and weight loss products are placed close to them, and often "lead" to items for babies and children. It's all about capturing the consumer, and knowing that millions of moms are going to 24 hour "pharmacies" to buy diapers, pediatric meds, or a gallon of milk, and can be persuaded into buying certain products that promise better health, better life, better parenting, better anything.

I'm a big sucker for that kind of shit. Marketing techniques have gotten very sophisticated that way. Running in to buy bandaids or poison ivy treatments for my kids, leaves me buying some herbal bubble bath or hair clip on my way out. That's why end-aisle products in the cashier line are filled with impulse purchase items---candy bars, chocolates, gum, batteries, super glue.

I like the part where they said that the woman intentionally wore a skirt so they wouldn't listen to her. If I wouldn't know better, I'd say this was happening in Pakistan or Egypt.

Germany currently has no voting law, isn't that funny?

On the BBC's website for the Olympics, they have little country profiles and news for each team. What's amusing (or weird) is that every country has a little 'fact sheet' about it - capital, population, etc. - except for the US. I mean, they assume you don't know that London is the capital of Great Britain, but they figure you don't need any info on the US. Odd.

A revamp of the voting law (and it will have to be a simple solution, due to the time constraints - they simply won't have the time to pull the usual shenanigans) will most probably spell the death for the FDP on the federal level, as the Überhangsmandate (those extra seats) were usually the only thing which kept them in the Bundestag.

But doesn't have the CDU the most Überhangsmandate? What do you expect as a solution? I assume Germany won't get rid of the dual vote per person system.

You got a link? Couldn't find it by browsing BBC.

The BBC localises its pages by where you're viewing from. So I suspect that it's simply the BBC US site, so won't give factoids about the country you're in.

  29. #2189
I wondered if that was the case, but it seemed far-fetched.

For example, US is here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/olympics/.../united-states

    UK is here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/olympics/.../great-britain

Do let me know if it's just cleverly localized. Otherwise, weird.

Yep, I get key facts on the US link:

    Key Facts

    Top medal sports
    (pre-2012)
    Athletics
    Swimming

    Capital
    Washington DC

    Population
    317,600,000

    Size
    9,800,000km²

    Languages
    English

    ~

And none on the UK site for me.

    So cleverly localised.
